Recurring personality traits and move types in characters you choose to play

EDIT #2: Post some of the characters you’ve chosen over the years. Maybe someone noticed a pattern you didn’t!
EDIT: To clarify the point of this thread is to look at the characters you’ve played and try and see if there are similarities you might not have noticed before. Like maybe they tend to have kind of wild looking attacks that lack finesse (Shen Woo, Cody, Iori, Maki, Jin, ect) or they have unique fireballs that don’t function like the normal hadoken kind of fireball (Cody, Baiken, Hsien-Ko, Spiral, Yatterman-2, Peacock.)

I was thinking about some of my favorite characters to play and what sort of similarities they had. Aesthetically most of my characters are VERY different however I found there are some things that tend to pop up pretty often in my choices whether I realize it or not.

Here is a list of some of my favorite characters to play:

Makoto (3rd Strike / SF4)
Cody (Alpha 3 / SF4)
Gouken (SF4 Vanilla)
Ryu (SF2:HF)
Baiken (Guilty Gear)
Hibiki (CvS2)
Rock (CvS2)
Rolento (Alpha 3 / CVS2 / SFxT)
Taokaka (Blazblue)
Peacock (Skullgirls)
Valentine (Skullgirls)
Shen Woo (KOF13)
Vice (KOF13 / CVS2 ) (more so the CvS2 version)
Chin (KOF13)
Iori (KOF13)
Lei (Tekken series)
Maki (CvS2)
B.B. Hood (Darkstalkers)
Hsien-Ko (Darkstalkers)
Jin (MvC2)
Hayato (MvC2)
SonSon (MvC2)
Spiral (MvC2)
Strider (MvC2)
Captain Commando (MvC2)
Rogue (MvC2)
Yatterman-2 (TvC)
Casshan (TvC)
Polimar (TvC)
Saki (TvC)
Doronjo (TvC)
Tekkaman Blade (TvC)

So the recurring stuff I noticed. Obviously other than Ryu/Gouken/Peacock they are all pretty much rushdown in your face type characters. I tend to pick characters who have unique ways to move around the screen even if their actual mobility isn’t great. I also tend to pick characters who have SOME form of a counter or attack from a defensive position (Cody’s vism dodge, Baiken’s everything, Rock’s counters, Hibiki’s dodge, Valentine’s counter, ect.)

I really seem to gravitate towards characters with “dash punch” type moves or a way to quickly move laterally forward such as a command run or command dash or hop. Despite my gravitation towards characters who have unique ways of moving around the stage I tend to pick characters who do it via GROUND game rather than having a super jump or dive kick (Obviously there are exceptions).

Personality wise I tend to like strong female characters (Peacock, Valentine, Makoto, Vice, Baiken, Maki, B.B. Hood, only Tao really doesn’t fit this.) and I like either Stoic male characters or guys who just don’t seem to care. On both sides of the gender barrier I like blood knights who just like to fight.

So, looking back at characters you’ve played or even if they aren’t your main are characters you enjoy playing. What sort of gameplay related or personality/art style related quirks do you notice showing up among the characters you choose?

there was a similar thread here.

http://forums.shoryuken.com/discussion/159286?threads/what-character-playstyle-do-you-like-best.159286/

I know that there were similar threads to this all over I’m sure. My idea is a smidge different though. I’m actually asking people to take a look back and do a retrospective of who they’ve chosen and then see fi there are similarities.

Not “Why they chose this character” or “What do you like” but rather how closely their actual picks end up being similar and what IS similar. It’s the difference between saying “I like rushdown characters with good frame traps” and actually breaking down their choices and noticing patterns they may not have realized was there.

I like characters with those long good priority hitboxes right out in front of them in space. I’m thinking 3S Chun stand fierce, 3S Ken stand roundhouse, CVS2 Sakura stand roundhouse. all the characters I really like seem to share that in common.

good buttons in general and good walk speed are pretty important.

Most of the characters I pick are those who can put out alot of damage from a simple hitconfirm. Either that those with good wakeup games.

Dark, edgy, gritty, anti-heroish, ‘‘neutral’’

Yeah come at me

When you look back at characters you’ve chosen are there any similarities you hadn’t noticed before?

Bad guys. Love playing as a villain (Billy and Hwa in KOF13, Claw and Dictator in ST, Rasetsumaru and Genjuro in Samurai Shodown V SP, etc). Hate overtly cutsie/kawaii characters.

Sounds like you also like guys with weapons. Billy Kane with his staff, Claw with his… claw. Hwa with his sake (if that counts) and of course Genjuro with his katana (kind of required given Samurai Showdown.)

I think that people aren’t QUITE getting this thread XD

Try looking back at the characters and look a little deeper to see if there are similarities you didn’t notice before or expect. Like, maybe you like characters who tend to use fire in their moves. Or maybe you like characters with a specific type of move like a dive kick or an axe kick or a slide.

Majority are to tier.

Third Strike: Ryu, Remy, Ken

SSFIV: Guy, Ryu, Makoto

SFxT: Lars, Ken, Guy, Ryu

P4A: Yu

Typically, I go for characters who are cool, calm, collected and/or highly disciplined. At least somewhat reserved, which may be due to my introverted personality and what I perceive to be the manner in which is the most appealing to act.

I tend to go for characters who fit said persona and stick it out with them, regardless of how good/bad they may be or how much they deviate from my preferred heavy rushdown/mix-up playstyle. Ken is only there because he’s been my crutch for a while and I find him more fun (offensive) than Ryu.

Oh god, my favorites to play are:
M.Bison(SF2 series, CVS2, SF4)
Chun Li(SF2 series,SF3,CVS2) B+HP ^^
Hakan(SF4)
Hwoarang(T3,TT2)
Baek(T2,TT2)
Heihachi(T1-T3,TT2)
JACK Robots(Tekken)
Paul(Tekken) Deathfist is a good reason
Law(Tekken)
Lei(Tekken)
King(Tekken)
Armor King(Tekken)
Marduk(Tekken)
Kung Lao(MK9)
Dr.Doom(Marvel)
Magneto(Marvel)
Raiden(KOF)
Goro(KOF)

Reasons, why I pick them? Well, I pick, whoever is interesting for me to play in most examples, but there is not really a certain pattern here.

Actually there is a few noticeable patterns.

  1. BIG Guys (Marduk, King, Armor King, Hakan, Dr. Doom, Raiden, Goro, Heihachi, Jack, and to a lesser extent Paul are all pretty beefy as far as size compared to everyone else in their game.)
  2. Grapplers (King, Armor King, Hakan, Marduk, Raiden, Goro)
  3. Punch oriented. All but Chun/Bison they are all pretty heavily punch oriented. Even Magneto, and Doom are more “hand” oriented with their attacks even thought hey got some really iconic kicks (Mag’s godly crLK and Doom’s Foot Dive) Hwoarang of course is a def exception to the rule here as he is ALL kicks lol.

Do not forget Paul´s Phoenix Smasher, great move. Hakan is also more a punch based dude. Baek +Hwoarang more kick oriented.
Big guys and grapplers, I really like to play with them, characters, who are outside of the mainstream. Don´t like to uses Shotos.
Realized only one female character there lol.
Never thought about big guys or punchers.

That is the kind of stuff I’m talking about! It’s just kind of neat to see how even conscious decisions where you know what you are looking for can result in interesting unforeseen interactions.

Like, I knew I liked counters and attacking from a defensive position stuff sure but I hadn’t realized that I also tend to pick characters who have poor reversal options outside of that. I also never realized how many characters I like have fireballs, I always thought it was a less common trait among my choices but close to half of the characters I pick have a fireball.

Thanks for clarifying, because after reading the older threads I got confused. Some answers there, including mine, might have been better suited here.

I think I like characters with mixed moves. Neither pure grappler nor pure charge eg:

grapplers with charge moves or mixed moves (Cerebella - SG, Victor - VS, R.Mika and Sodom SFA3)
mixed characters with charge or grappling moves (**Power Mode Akari - LB2, Remy - 3S, Iggy - Jojo Capcom, Karin SFA3, Parasoul - SG **)

after that:

unique"shotos",some with with good anti-air (Morrigan, Lillith - VS, Filia - SG, Hotaru - Garou, Ryu and Yuri - KOF, Tia - Breakers)
“difficult” footsie based characters (Rose - SF4, Middler - Jojo Capcom)
Unique characters I found in no other game to compare to ** (Lei-Lei - VS, C.Viper - SF4, Power Mode Hibiki - LB2, Len - MB)**
Close range characters** (only 3S and SF4 Makoto so far)**

Based on those characters who I played often, I also ended up liking characters with an explosive temperament but neither too dark or too serious, except maybe Hibiki and Victor.
Dont mind cute characters, as long as they arent too cute or have too shrill voices. hence why I can stand Lilith, Akari and B.B Hood but not Felicia or Nakoruru. Unfortunately KOF13 Yuri is very annoying to listen too.

I like a variety of personality traits or traits that make me pick a character but here a top 4 . I mostly play characters for their personalities to be honest, tier lists and move lists kind of factor in.

Cocky Morons- I love Stupid and/or Cocky characters who I can laugh at or with. Ex. Ibuki, Paul Phoenix, Shermie, Kensou, Hoahmaru, Johnny Cage, Heavy D, Kyo

Grapplers- I love Grapplers, the idea of picking someone up and chucking them just screams domination. Ex. Zangief, Tizoc, Daimon, King, Hugo

White Dudes with Beards- If they are White and have a beard, I will use them. Paul Phoenix, Zangief, Mario

American Stereotypes- I like playing the Blonde, Blue-eyed American stereotype characters. I don’t know why. Ex. Terry, Ken, Guile, Paul Phoenix, Captain America

The only characters I play who don’t fit these 4 are Yamazaki and Frank West.

I love characters with Command throws especially if they aren’t grapplers, so I really like Ibuki, Super Skrull and KOF characters in general.
I tend not like Super Serious Japanese/Asian Kung fu man characters but Gato is an exception.
I don’t usually mess with charge characters who aren’t Guile or Dao Long from Breakers Revenge.
I tend not to like the “Freak Character” archtype from the 90’s, I ignore them.
I’m slowly coming around to Kawai/Moe characters, I got over the Ibuki hump and now I’m working on Athena lol.

In terms of gameplay, Grapplers and Rushdown are my game. Most characters I use need at least a half decent anti-air.

I tend to go for mostly Robots/golems (Sentinel, Astaroth and the Jacks) , and the occasional werewolf/actual wolf (Ammy, Valkenhayne). 90% of the guys tend to be the big dudes with fantastic range & damage. They tend to let me have some control of the match like a Zoner would with The range on their moves and stuff like armor, But let me deal a lot of damage like the rushers.

Apparently, I play psychotic characters who DP righteously for the win.
