You just have to look at multiple sites (e-Bay, Half.com, Amazon.com, etc.) and luck on to a time when someone’s desperate or the price is right.
When I was buying Tekken 5 sticks for mods, the average price was around $50-$60. Most of those came in the original box and at least 2 came with the T5 game and DVD/CD Collector’s case, too.
Last one I bought for $20 (September/October last year) with shipping included.
This was all last year when stick selling got crazy because of SF IV.
It’s “sort of” calmed down a bit but for whatever reasons a lot of legacy (pre-PS2) sticks are now starting to show up. They’re for less popular systems, though, and I can’t understand why some of these guys think they’re going to get $58 for a used Saturn Virtua Stick unless it’s mint condition and the second-edition Japanese candy-button Pro stick.
A used MadCatz TE or Hori RAP SA for $20 more is a much better deal! Better parts, better performance, guaranteed to work with USB systems. Pre-Agetec Dreamcast sticks have more modwork involved to make them better than HRAP-style sticks do – that is unless people are into collecting sticks and keeping them stock condition for mini-museums. I can respect that.
I guess some of the prices (like the Saturn Astrocade Twin Stick Pro) can be justified but most of the pricing still seems high to me…
After not getting the HRAP EX for $50 shipped I landed one for $65 shipped. Not too shabby. I have some Seimitsu buttons ready to be swapped. In the next week or so I’ll have an EX and EX SE sitting on my desk.
I believe I’ve found cheaper options for my Joypad/Joystick converters…
The guy on e-Bay wants too much for those… I can get 3 converters from overseas for LESS than what he’s charging for 2 – even with shipping! (Relatively small hardware = low shipping cost.)
I’m just going to get a Total Control 3 for DC and (2) Total Control 2… Don’t need the Saturn functions with PS2 in one converter!
The converters will cost just under $20. Way less than what Mr. E-Bay is charging.
I know business people have to make a buck but consumers have to be stingy and smart, too!
Today’s Stick Acquistion –
Saitek Aviator!
As much as I’d like to use the best flight control stick I’ve ever played with on PS3 (the Ace Combat 5 Flight Stick set), it just wasn’t meant to be. Sony and the other companies want us to buy new (non-fighting) sticks.
I believe based on what I’ve read the Saitek Aviator is the best option for PS3 to play Hawx and iL-2 Illyushin: Birds of Prey.
I’ve just heard too many horror stories about the Thrustmaster Hotas-X breaking on people and low-quality build. There has to be a reason those things are discounted 40% or better online!
The Saitek looks and feels nice. It has a flip-up cover on one of the buttons, a gun trigger, and screw-in wrist rest for the stick. 2 modes of stick set-up for play comfort. Not a bad-looking stick!
The throttle is in front of the stick but even Mr. Lefty (ME!) plays flight simulators with the main stick in my right hand.
I’ve looked at the converters and decided to get one that supports DS2/PS2 controllers. There are some differences between PS1 and PS2 PCB’s and the reviews I’ve read on converters seem to favor one particular converter that I’m looking at right now. Probably get it from P-A.
Thanks for the direct to e-Bay, though! That was one of the converters I looked at (not on e-Bay but an import game site) and one I passed on because of the PS1/earlier converter issues.
MarkMan,
Definitely aware of the Saitek/Mad Catz connection! The Stick actually had a SKU sticker on it that said Mad Catz! LOL I actually went to a GameStop in a different section of town (I’d call it a ghetto area of Columbus) looking for a copy of a Capcom game (Gundam Vs Zeta Gundam). Didn’t find a mint-condition copy but I noticed the Aviator controller.
It is a bit quirky but supposedly better built than the Thrustmaster Hotas-X. It took me a good few minutes to get the thing configured for iL-2 Illyushin on the PS3 but once I got used to the button layout it was a better play experience than the PS3 DualShock 3 was! It was much easier to coordinate moves in the game and keep from stalling in Simulator Mode.
I personally DON’T like Simulator Mode since it’s way too sensitive but I thought it was a good indication of the degree of control I had with this stick… it was easier to recover from stalls and I experienced far fewer of them than I did with the DS3!
Too bad there’s nothing like this controller for the Wii… Wii’s getting an arcade flight game by the middle of January based on the anime feature Sky Crawlers. The game came out late 2008 in Japan but just got localized for the US. It was supposed to be out in time for Christmas but got pushed to January. That game and Tatsunoko Vs Capcom will probably push me into getting a Wii.
BTW, the Sky Crawlers game was developed by the same gaming division of Namco that did the Ace Combat series. The game’s gotten good reviews in Japan… Sky Crawlers is a lot like WWII games – piston-engine fighters but set in an alternate reality. As much as I like jets there is nothing like shooting down another plane with machine guns and cannon.
For anyone who missed the TE lighting deal yesterday; Amazon has the 360 TE round 1 for $99.99 today. If you’re not holding out for madcatz’s new stick, this seems like a decent deal.
Got my (2) ToToTek PS2-to-Saturn joypad converters on Thursday.
Just had a chance to try them out today after I woke up. Everything’s closed today because of weather so I have an extended weekend of playing hooky!
Anyhow, the converters work fine.
Here’s what to expect if you ever decide to import the converter –
It converts 7 buttons from PS2 for Saturn use. I’ll use this format for conversion PS2/Saturn…
Square/A, Triangle/X, R1/Z, X/B, O/C, L1/Y, and Start/Start.
Note that there is no functionality for Saturn “shoulder buttons” (L/R) and that “Select” won’t work for Saturn since Sega never designed a controller with a “Select” Button. The L2 and R2 buttons on the PS2 controllers/joysticks are also disabled.
If you use a joystick with PS2 PCB (customized or Hori built, MC Cthulu, etc.) you will have to switch QD’s between at least two buttons to get a proper six-button layout for Saturn games. In my case, since I use HRAP3 layout on all my PS2 sticks (Square, Triangle, R1, L1 and X, O, R2, L2), I have to switch the QD’s for L1 and R2 to get a comfortable “Saturn Y-Button” position. You’ll have to go back into your Saturn game settings and optimize the Punches and Kicks to work in an optimal six-button layout, too.
It’s really that simple. I’m probably just going to leave one PS2 joystick with the QD’s permanently switched so I don’t have to open up the faceplate all the time and futz with the QD connections.
