I didn’t make any claims about VS. YOU’RE PROJECTING.
got attendance numbers, shoultz? Like absolutes?
Or play numbers, how many people play VS as compared to one of the mainstream games? (Pick one really, Tekken, SF, even something like BB).
Also, no need to escalate. Sadly I’ve learned that I can’t throw insults back at you without getting in trouble (maybe my tongue is just a little too barbed), but please keep it in control, even if we disagree we’re all friends here.
Actually nevermind, I realized that I've enabled you to hijack this whole thread, which is actually about what games people would like to see again, into your personal rant about VS and how nobody will play its perfection on GGPO. I apologize to everyone else for falling into the aside, and direct you to this handy thread [here]('http://forums.shoryuken.com/t/vampire-community-thread-ggpo-hitbox-overlay-dustloop-tutorial-2-and-why-you-lose-to-me/113332').
yea yea pull your mod card
all you’ve proven to me is that you’re willing to argue over something and actually no leg to stand on. Its not a big game!!! no good players show up!!! how many people attend again???
lol but yea, I’m done here too.
This makes me want to setup GGPO again and play Vsav. Going 0-20 against Shoultzula was fun. I really need to play this again.
On topic: Fighting Vipers, Last Bronx, Tobal, Powerstone and SamSho.
Fact #1: Pirates are also the heaviest legal consumers.
Spoiler
http://www.webpronews.com/swiss-government-declares-downloading-for-personal-use-legal-2011-12
"Despite the industry’s claims that downloading undermines their business, this study shows that the effect of unauthorized downloading on the industry’s bottom line is negligible. One key finding of the study is that downloaders spend as much if not more to acquire content legally as those who do not download. Researchers found no change in amount of disposable income spent on music and movies, despite the fact that roughly one third of Swiss people engage in some form of downloading. The government concluded, then, that no change to the current legal structure was necessary, and urged the entertainment industry to grow and adapt with the changes in technology and in consumer habits, rather than trying to suppress progress."
Produce more and better demos, and make it comfortable to buy more than it is to illegally download and people will do it. (As iTunes and Steam have proven)
And as a publisher who would you like as your client- Person A who buys 4 games a year or person B who buys 30 and pirates 20 more?
Fact #2: You can’t compare piracy of your usual PC games to pirating a perfect emulation of an arcade game that is inaccessible to normal people by legal means. (Even if I buy an arcade machine, I can’t play vs other people via rollback based net play with it)
Give the players what GGPO+ROM do plus more and they’ll buy it.
So yeah, piracy is illegal but the situation isn’t black and white as some people would like you to think. (And suddenly according to the publishers, used games sales are a bigger killer now hmmmmmmmmmmm)
It’s not laziness, it’s predictable behavior.
If we were in a different era and other fighting games didn’t offer integrated multiplayer then the situation would be different. In that case, the interest in playing VS would simply have to overcome the barrier of entry, which is not too difficult for a fan of the genre. Now though, the interest in playing VS over GGPO has to exceed interest in playing a modern title with integrated multiplayer, and the degree which VS interest exceed other options has to be enough to overcome the barrier to entry. In other words, you have to find people that are motivated to play VS to a much greater degree than they are motivated to play games like SF4/MvC3/MK9/BB/HDR/KoF (or any other modern fighting game or re-release).
So, you are correct when you wrote, “… they don’t really want to play this game”, but you should add, “to a sufficient degree more than they want to play some other game”. Users aren’t lazy, they’re just not motivated to work harder when the perceived benefits do not exceed the effort. Some people have so much interest in the game that the delta between the gain from playing another game and the gain from playing VS is large enough to justify the time investment… and that’s why you have people on this thread advocating so vociferously for the game. Those who play it have to be very invested (or have a weak premium on their time), or else they wouldn’t play.
You say “work harder” about something that can be done in 15 minutes of clicking. Hilarious.
I love Darkstalkers… I just don’t like playing it on the PC. Even playing it on a console doesn’t feel right to me.
I’ve driven over 5 hours just to play VS2 on a Sega Versus City though. Multiple times.
On topic: Last Blade, Darkstalkers.
So… how about that Powerstone, guys?
Also, I can’t remember ever playing Samurai Showdown. I really don’t have much experience with SNK games or even Capcom games before SFII(which I have faint memories of). Vampire is definitely the oldest of the fighting games that I’ve played and I only started five months ago or so. Marvel vs Street fighter(my first foray into versus games) was probably the most recognizable fighter(and one of my first ones) that played in a pizza shop before I got my Dreamcast.
You mocked his point without actually refuting it. So, I guess you give up?
He’s refuting the point that GGPO is easy to set up.
That’s not the point though. The point (as I read it) is that for most people, the gain from playing those old games on their PC isn’t worth even that amount of extra effort.
A big part of it is that people don’t actually want to play VS or A3 or whatever much more than the new games.
Also, grammar nazi’ing is the lowest form of discussion, but you might wanna rework that sentence some.
If getting on ggpo and playing some amazing games against some amazing players isnt your cup of tea, I wonder what your motivation is for playing fighting games at all?
I still recall fl0e getting on vamp sav awhile back and playing a nice hour + set with him. That’s the kinda shit I look for, and ggpo offers those opportunities.
This is true. VS is one of the most balanced, technical, and fun games of all time but it requires you to work as you think and practice more in VS than other games and that’s not something most look for in a fighting game. You can say it takes 15 minutes to set up, but someone who doesn’t know what they’re doing wouldn’t know where to begin.
This work is one of the reasons why MvC2 was more popular in the US than VS. In MvC2, you had technical advanced options but if you felt like messing around or had execution problems you could always do stuff like pick Cable and bait into AHVB. In VS, it feels like you really have to work for it to pay off.
It comes down to casual vs hardcore. Right now we’re in a casual era, so expect games like SF4 and UMvC3 to dominate while technical games like VS, MvC2, DFO, etc, will be ignored.
While it would be nice for some games to be remade, at this point in time it’s a want and not a need. Also let Capcom get more experience with 2.5D.
It’s not even down to casual vs hardcore, imo. Its how you like to spend your playing time. Especailly in the GGPO environment VS essentially requires a TON of practice time if you’re ever going to do anything other than just lose. Some people like practice time, some people don’t, it’s a taste thing.
In a game with a wide player pool and extremely easy access you can practice by playing other people, even in combo-heavy games like marvel.
hahaha.
I credit my play ability to 2 teachers I had and GGPO and I’m not a shitty player by any stretch. If it weren’t for GGPO I wouldn’t be half as good as I am now and its the gods honest truth.
talking to afro legends\dgv\roy bisel about footsie spacing, talking to maxstah\dreamfire about variable poke patterns, talking to oouchi\bizm about how to approach fast paced 2d fighters and the mind game behind mixups, the countless hours spent baiting push blocks and all the mind games it provides, dealing with the speed of incredibly fast mixups, I’ve even came up with NEW option selects that to this day I haven’t seen anyone use in mvc2\mvc3 and I made them up about a year and a half ago which were inspired from vampire savior.
usually to get that much info from REALLY good players, you have to go to a tournament or live in their scene. I did it by sitting @ my computer. How invaluable is that? What could take a year to gain knowledge wise, I did it in about 3 months because I have steady access to god like players.
you can’t actually “play” sf4\mvc3 online because the net code is so bad it prevents anyone from playing the game properly. The pure fundamentals can’t be learned but on GGPO, they can. You think spacing on footsie or variable poke patterns is only SF relevant? or baiting push blocks is only mvc3 relevant? those are basic mechanics found in most games and you can actually learn to use them rather than abuse lag tactics and get bobo wins.
I
GGPO is for rich people
who got $$$ for all that computers and equipment, etc…?
Forgot to mention games that I want remade:
-
Rival Schools
I would like to see a new version but would like the gameplay to feel more like United by Fate than the newer versions. Daigo, Hyo, and Akira better still be in it. -
Capcom vs SNK 3
Seeing the direction that the current KOF and SF games are taking, I recommend letting SNK handle a larger part of the graphics and game mechanics. The first Capcom vs SNK had great presentation and CvS2 was also good, Capcom needs to study this. Roll cancel should not be removed. -
SNK vs Capcom 2
The entrance to the battle field, the small dialogue before the fight, and the one on one slower-paced fighting made this game good. That is, if you ignore the poor balance and graphics.
I like all those, especially the last one ‘they kind of blew it in the last stages, I’d love to see them do it RIGHT!’
That’s one of the better arguments I’ve seen for a reboot.
This was recent and I remember looking in on the lobby. There must have been like fourteen spectators or some crazy shit like that haha.
Capcom won’t get any real experience with 2.5D if they keep rehashing Street Fighter and Mahvel(looks far better if you ask me) to death. It’d be nice to see something new from them because SFxTekken feels like a copy and paste with tons of features and GEMS.
I got a mid range laptop three years ago and I use it to play on GGPO just fine. I bet one of those $300 black Friday laptops can play the games on GGPO without breaking a sweat.
Too bad no one would buy it in this scenario…
