Reboot of old school fighting games IP's

If I had to pick an old school fighting IP for a reboot right now I think I’d go with Power Stone. I love the wacky characters, item based combat and over the top hypers. It just feels like such a lighthearted game that I can’t even be mad if I lose. This series is a perfect candidate for handhelds like the Vita and 3DS too. It has the highest probability of playing like a mini smash for Capcom and it could have wide appeal with the younger audience. I know that a lot of Dreamcast fans would pick it up and a console version down the road could be a fun thing as a XBL Arcade/PSN/Wii U store title at budget price.

Downloadable games can be pretty huge these days and it gives Capcom a chance to test the waters at least. I can’t say that anyone would be angered by their decision to look at the franchise again either.

The game really isn’t as perfect as some folks might think. I’ll still go on record stating that it blows out every other game in the year 2011 in terms of overall balance and lasting appeal though. Potemkin is the only grappler I’ve seen that looks as scary as Victor after all these years and Hsien-Ko manages to hit top 3 constantly even now when Niitsuma’s team is struggling to make zoners stronger in UMvC3. I look at Vampire Savior as the Mahvel 2 of Japan. It still pulls regular numbers after a decade and it manages to do this without having a god tier that is a prerequisite for winning which is amazing to say the least.

Just curious, but if “low tier” characters are regularly winning tournaments, and high tier ones arent, then why are they still considered low/high tier? I thought tier placement is at least somewhat affected by actual results and players?

Rise 2 was awesome! Characters could totally face BOTH DIRECTIONS.

It’s another one of those standard things you hear about like every single game from its advocates, and usually with almost that exact phrasing “You can win with low tiers!”

Well, there’s probably no community desire to produce an updated tier list. Which I guess is exactly the problem in the first place.

Double Dragon or Rage of The Dragons. Remember those being fun as a kid

Tiers are dependent on a number of factors including something as simple as how much effort is required to use the character to their full potential. You also have to take the skill of the opponent into account as well. Anakaris really is bad, but a great player like Mar uses every tool at his disposal as a tournament player to get his victories. There are also tons of Lilith players in Japan who do the same thing. Tournaments are more a test of the players than they are of characters. Keits and Ski talked about this very subject when a message regarding Zero was brought up on the show(WakeupSRK) a couple of days ago.

Matches start even before the character select screen. They begin in solo training, sparring, psychological state and innate skill. Fighting games can be so unpredictable that low tier legendary warriors can fuck shit up in a properly balanced game. Vampire is very much a momentum based fighter. Once you’ve got a flow it is much harder to stop that than it might be in Mahvel or Street Fighter. The game is deliciously brutal that way haha.

Edit: I should have mentioned this earlier. Grapplers and heavies in KOF XIII are looking mighty sexy alongside Potemkin. KOF has some neat stuff going on in the balance and lasting appeal looks good, but those are things that Vampire has been tested on for a decade. KOF XIII probably not gonna last that long. :stuck_out_tongue:

You make me want to start play VS again on GGPO, I wasn’t great those years ago, but I had a hella good time, and getting beat down by Kajoq’s Leilei was always fun.

I think I could be alot better now than I was then.

The offline community seems to be getting bigger though.

Probably because it’s a pain in the ass to set up and the exposure for the product is very low. Convincing people that they should find roms, an emulator, and a netplay client, and then get all of them working properly in order to search for opponents online isn’t as easy as convincing them to put a CD into their xbox and press the “on” button.

I personally play TF2 multiplayer far more often than I play Europa Universalis multiplayer, simply because it’s easy to get into a game.

Last blade, enough said

Emulator and netplay client both come standard with the GGPO package so no searching (same with supercade). Roms are as easy to find as typing them into google same with ggpo client (same with supercade). The only thing that is hard about setting up ggpo is port forwarding. I understand that is to much for some people to do as not many people are tech savvy with setting up their routers. However, I feel that people are using that as an excuse to not go through a process that takes about 5~10mins max to get done.

brief history of DCC which is the biggest tournament in Japan for VS\VH

dcc 6, 2011
1st place kaji\jedah, lilith is the 3rd worst character in the game

dcc 4

demitri on 2nd place team, 4th worst character in the game
lilith on 3rd place team

dcc 1

demitri on 2nd place team
victor on 2nd place team, 2nd worst character in the game

steady low tier placement through out the years and this is the LATER years meaning that matchups have been flushed out and STILL, low tier still find a way to get to top 3 positions. This doesn’t include all the other tournaments where singles eams have excellent low tier players beating top tiers clean in a competitive environment. Like I said, I’m not pulling it out of my ass. The game is THAT balanced and the tournament results prove it. DCC is the biggest tournament for VS\VH. Its basically the EVO of the darkstalkers series. Just putting that out there before you decide to say DCC isn’t a big tournament.

the proof is in the pudding and its not a random blanket statement.

if anyone wants to see this years vampire savior finals, it starts @ 48 mins with lilith versus bb hood

Either laziness has reached new heights lately or they don’t really want to play this game.
A pain in the ass to download GGPO and a rom? Really?

Maybe some people think piracy is wrong?

(stop laughing dammit! :stuck_out_tongue: )

I don’t think you understand the problem. This is logically equivalent to saying that those characters are not low tier.

anecdotal evidence is anecdotal… and again, its exactly the same as any other underplayed game… and that’s the thing, its hard to take the argument seriously when you see the same argument used to hype how that game is the BEST GAME EVER! I’m not even arguing that it’s not a great game, for chrissake!

Anyways, to get back on topic I’ve decided on one of 3 choices I think would be best, and that I’d like to see the most.
[]Samurai Shodown (stripped of 5/6 bleahs and 3d trash): Definitely room for a weapon fighter, and its a series with a good nostalgia factor and a lot of love
[
]Bushido Blade: Again, weapon fighter, also utterly stripped down damage/combo/whatever system would make for actual unique play.

Powerstone: Or something in that style, imo the most fun of the arena-style games
I don’t understand the problem? even though I play the game @ a pretty good level? right… not to mention that you guys are arguing against Japanese pro’s who do the tier list stuff. You don’t have to take my word for it, how about taking the word of people who’ve been playing the games for 15+ years?

just because low tiers do well doesn’t mean they’re top tier. Tiers are defined by option sets and matchups. The more god like tools and better matchups you have, the closer the character is to top tier. Those low tier vsav characters have great tools, just not as many good matchups as the top tiers.

every character in this game can apply some type of BS offense and can apply defensive mechanics. That’s why the game is super balanced. I think the GG community calls it a compressed tier list. While there are tiers still, the difference between 2nd worst and best isn’t as big as say magneto and servebot from mvc2.

whats funny about this whole thing is that you guys actually played and FOLLOWED the game, it wouldn’t be an argument because you guys would also understand how balanced it is. You’re arguing from a non playing perspective which is what scrubs do but not surprised by that judging by what website i’m on

shoultz, you’re thinking as an advocate. Nobody’s arguing that the tiers aren’t very tight, or whatever, but rather that you’re presenting it in a idiosyncratic way (and a way that has certain connotations).

Tighter tiers should be the norm for any game… if a character is truly unplayably strong or weak, then one of the designers did something truly wrong.

And to be frank, VS seems like one of those scenes where low-tier players can thrive (not saying the tiers aren’t tight, just noting again) because there’s not that massive crush of high-tier pro or semi-pro players filling up the slots at all the tourneys.

The example I’d use is melty Blood. People made all the same arguments you’re making here, but when it came to a really big nationwide tournament, it was basically all Witch-cat-maid (Kohaku I think? I never remember those characters names right). When put in a much larger (but still small) pool of players the vaunted ‘low tiers can do well!’ fell right apart.

Holy shit you are dense.

dood, wtf are you smoking are you just that dumb?

how can a game that has been getting steady tournament play in japan by the likes of daigo, ohnuki, tokdio, sako and stay in the tournament scene for 15+ years be underplayed?

not to mention that vsav was very big when it came out, then it got an sbo spot for a few years and since then, DCC has drawn in 90-100+ attendants every year for vs\vh tournaments. Its not some small ass podunk dbz tournament fighting game and the only people are playing are scrubs lol.

This is one of the few games EVER in fighting game history to have a competitive tournament scene for that long and you think its underplayed?

lol fucks sake, 15+years in a strong tournament scene and the guy calls it underplayed when 99% of tournament fighting games never make it that long.

LOLOLOLOLOLOL

please JUST STFU, you have no clue what you’re talking about now lol

its underplayed!!! WAIT, now its no good people show up to the tournaments to play!!!

i knew you would bring that dumb shit up which is why I also wrote this
