How do you think SF4 and Marvel are in the positions that they are right now?
Tekken is a Worldwide game, we(The USA) are not the target market. Notice how the USA begged and begged for a Tekken Tag Tournament 2 cabinet and never got one while Australia gets cabinets left and right?
On the flip side, Capcom was very, very generous with its USA SF4 Cabs, even with the slow decline of the USA Arcade Scene .When US Arcade owners asked for the Super, AE and AE2012 update for their own machines, Capcom smiled and said “Sure, no problem buddy!”, while Europe basically got nothing.
Southeast Asia and Oceania have always been the home of Tekken. Tekken is a sport in some countries (Korea) and the Tekken scene in Australia is comparable to the USA’s Street Fighter Scene ( Top players who can fight and beat Koreans but their average players suck ass).Plus, with globalization and the rise of developing nations, focusing on a USA release isn’t as much of an imperative anymore. Companies can now make tons of money outside of the USA now due to the world’s average purchasing power going up.Notice how Tekken is expanding into nations such as Indonesia and other rising Asian Economic powers?(This is off topic but even the poorest African can afford a Coke bottle now, World Economics is such an interesting subject, especially when it applies to common things like Competitive Video Games).
I briefly touched on some of the points made by the article on my blog when I reviewed TTT2 just one day before the article was posted. I won’t repost everything here, but basically I mentioned that Tekken is a great package for both casual button-mashers and experienced veterans.
That said, it does provide a high barrier of entry for those who want to transition from casual to pro. It’s not just a matter of not being braindead-easy. For the amount of time and effort a casual player would need to just play Tekken competently he could have learned P4A, Skullgirls and King of Fighters (or Halo, Modern Warfare and Call of Duty).
That doesn’t mean the game is dying, or even that it’s unhealthy. It just means you’ll see fewer people making the jump from casual home player to hardcore tournament goer. It means the game may sell well but it won’t necessarily have large numbers of tournament attendees. It means top Tekken players will rarely be top players of other games, and also top players of other games will rarely be top Tekken players at the same time. As far as I can tell, the Tekken community is just fine with that. They don’t want or need their game to be a huge hit at the tourney circuit like UMVC3. They’re perfectly happy with the way things are right now.
GameFAQs is much worse with topics like “Do you play to mostly have fun or to win?” -.-
Argg i enjoyed the first 3 games fighting system better… come at me
"Tekken is too hard"
Hilarious. If you think tekken is too hard, you probably also think that SF4 and marvel 3 are the pinnacles of fighting games and are omg so hard. Get that crap out of here.
That you have to focus dash cancel shinpukya xx shoryuken to move is awesome aka Colombian backdash
and can i please get a link to this Korean Hotel or arena or stream of the korean Championship for tekken?
That’s covered in Fight Lab actually… The first stage teaches you movement, and to get the boss fight in S rank, you gotta be precise with your movement, which does its job. Actually, the whole fight lab will make you familiar with all the game mechanics except wakeup and counterhit hunting.
The game is accessible already for new players. The practice mode is there, the record function is there, you got online practice mode too (and there’s alot of people who’ll love to mentor someone). Fight Lab perfectly shows you the basics. And the Tekken community are doing their best to do tutorials to help people learn the game. THERE’S NO REASON PEOPLE CAN COMPLAIN ABOUT THE GAME NOT BEING ACCESSIBLE. Everything is spoonfed already. People will play this game and will be good at this game if they wanted to. People are just straight-up lazy now, and the article pretty much confirms it.
if this is the case in your local area, then doesn’t it make more sense that your locals simply don’t like the game, not that the game is too difficult to learn?
furthermore, if you like the game but you don’t have adequate competition in your local area, the same rules apply as they always have…you have to travel. it’s the same as it’s always been.
tekken doesn’t need to be simplified to satisfy a group of players that don’t even like the game to begin with nor who aren’t willing to even learn the basics, which are easy. its already the highest selling fg franchise to date, so the idea of dumbing down the game so that the half-wits, simpletons, and the apathetic can wrap their feeble brains around an already simple system at the expense of alienating its already LARGE player base is just plain stupid. honey attracts more flies than shit. the games’ success has proven that it’s not broken, and if it ain’t broke, there’s no need to fix it.
the game doesn’t need to be changed. what needs to change is the mentality of the 09er/sf4/CoD/mvc3 generation. i’ll just give it to you raw and uncut…you guys are just fucking bitches. straight talk.
 This, I think, is the crux of the issue.
I never said it wasn’t. Thing is though, the whole article is written with the idea that Tekken is struggling to gain relevance in the US.
It’s not struggling, it’s not even trying. The Tekken community does not give a shit about what happens to the game in the US, because it’s an arcade community first and foremost.
SRK is the worst for locking/deleting anything that elicits spirited discussion or offends the sensibilities of the power tripping moderators.
I would expect a site devoted to games about fighting to be a lot more tolerant of disagreement and conflict.
This is what i’m understanding, please indulge me if i’m wrong. We suffer as the america scene cause the general pop. is too dumb/ADHD ridden and lazy to even try a game to see if they like it, let alone become proficient at it? Therefore we have lower entrants in tourneys, which causes a black hole of lesser entrants. Then why do these people insist to remain in the FG community, rather than go back to shooters or sand box games (don’t get me wrong, small doses of mindless fun is good for all), and stop tainting our scene. Give me QUALITY over quantity any day!
What the hell else you need to dumb down in this game?? You got rage. The tried to remove some of the frame traps. I don’t think the the have the whole 8frame, 10frame, 12frame jabber shit. Step isn’t as good and I’m not sure about this but oki isn’t as strong…honestly i don’t think the game is that fucking hard…

I can’t be the only one finding the use of quality over quantity ironic in defense of Tekken.
Wasn’t Tekken considered as some kind of noob game where you only had to play Eddy / Hwoarang and mash buttons to beat pro players ? The irony…
“TTT2 needing revamp”
… Bullshit. Tekken is fun and perfect fighting game to play! What needs to be understood is that intermediate AND casual players benefit from TTT2!! Learn the fundamentals, play to win, and have fun in the process! If you have trouble, you can always resort to practice mode, getting help from the other dedicated players… or you play in the Fight Lab and perhaps learn things there!
I would rather play a hard game that is beautiful, challenging and deep. Then Marvel which is easy, cartoony and not much depth. Or play SF x T which was just plain ass.
