Rashid General Thread: Desert Storm - second new character

So after my first offline session I am definitely feeling the sentiment in this post.

It’s fun to dick around online and go for -2 tornado into jab and have it work on people, but vs a skilled tournament player that doesn’t go anywhere except eating their 3 or 4 frame jab.

Throwing in an EX DP wouldn’t be such a bad option for Rashid if this game were 4, but it’s Street Fighter 5. A blocked EX DP gets so insanely punished at high levels of play it’s not worth going for at all.

I’m just not seeing what Rashid’s advantage is over the other characters. I originally said it was mobility, but then I fight Nash who can go flying across the screen with Critical Art or V Trigger at any moment, meanwhile having better normals and damage.

Other characters strength seem so obvious. Nash easily combos into his critical art for insane damage, Necalli is the same way, other characters have insane buttons and confirms.

I go into training mode with Rashid, trying to create some tech, and I want to bang my head against the wall. Why can’t EX divekick on block go through like it does on hit? That would be an interesting area for some (semi) safe pressure (that requires a meter), but nope, it is just super punishable.

Why does V skill take so long to land? I’m trying to find some non corner tech with that move and again it seems like there’s nothing there.

Why is cr. lp hitbox so small that it can’t consistently connect after s.lk?

Why does Critical Art move rashid backwards???

I’m just shaking my head so hard at Ono right now.

/salty rant

(and before anyone says it, yes I know I’m probably blaming my own lack of skill on the character… but he still just feels weak).

They recently put up the Rashid frame data on the shoryuken wiki, and I wanted to point out the spinning mixer data is missing one part of the move. I don’t know if anyone else realized this yet but spinning mixer has 3 different versions of mashing, 1.no mash 2.some mash 3.a lot of mash and that is not represented on the frame data. Let us not forget that this exists because it could have some relevant uses.

So we get a blood type but not a specific country of origin? Interesting.

I feel like I have a decent amount of experience with Rashid, and if I’m being completely honest with myself, I agree. He’s my favourite character in the game in terms of style and personality, but I don’t think he has the tools to hang out at the top. He’s fun to play online, but after a few months when people start learning his shenanigans, it’ll be game over. I’ll continue to play him, but probably use someone else as a ‘main’.

How are people using the complete vertical coverage Rashid has in front of him once he’s got his V-Trigger? Is there a way to apply pressure that limits people’s options when they have to be careful not to jump, lest they eat a tornado into whatever?

A few SF4 characters had the threat of their Ultra as a big ol’ pressure tool. Does Rashid have the same kind of potential with his V-Trigger, or is the midair damage too piddly without the Super combo to back it up?

Rashid is top tier in my opinion. The fact that he can combo his V-Skill, V-Trigger, and his CA in multiple ways and do solid damage makes him a cut above the rest.

He’s one of the few characters in SFV that feels free & flexible.

I would disagree strongly with the part about him doing solid damage. His V-Skill isnt very good either. He can do the divekicks off a normal jump and the roll kick is unsafe. The regular roll could be good on its own if it didnt go so far but to use it by itself very risky. His v-trigger is solid, can be used as a hit confirm for extra damage or some ok mixups. As for his CA you cant combo it off his regular hit confirm of st.MP cr.MK which hurts, and using it after hitting a v-trigger doesnt seem worth it for the damage.

Rashid’s V-Skill is EXCELLENT. Experiment more with it.

The Rashid bandwagon is coming.

I just explained why it’s mediocre so would you like to enlighten everyone on how it is wonderful?

Wow, his special move frame data is horrible. YUCK! His normals are… okay… nothing bad but nothing amazing.

I just wish he did more damage to be honest.

There have been so many times that my opponent has less than 10% HP and I have around 45 ish and there’s nothing I can do. Turtling/running the clock doesn’t work very well since he can’t projectile zone/threaten from full screen and risking frame traps at that point is suicide because everyone hits like a damned truck.

Overhead is slow, doesn’t lead into anything and he cannot condition opponent to block low in the first place without telegraphing it (all his low hits are from crouching…and only one of which leads into any meaningful damage…and even then you either sacrifice damage for OK-ish oki or you take the slightly bigger damage option and sacrifice said OK-ish oki and spacing!)

He is so momentum heavy that if you stop or are stopped it is almost impossible to get back into it (and let’s face it, you aren’t going to keep up the momentum indefinitely)- as some have already mentioned as soon as you (willingly or are forced to) stop playing ham and start playing SF, you start to lose…Because. He. Has. No. Damage.

But by God is he fun to play as.

Not sure if anybody else found this yet.

^^^ Rashid can cancel off the first hit of his -> + Strong move into his roll kick. He can also cancel off the first hit of his ducking Fierce into roll kick. Doing this in the corner can lead into acouple things like his CA.

^^^ In this vid, i counter crushed with roundhouse, then juggled with --> Strong (Cancel into) Roll Kick , then CA in the corner. The whole thing carries to the corner fairly well so don’t worry about being deep in the corner at the start of it. You can also get the counter crush, do the Strong to Roll Kick juggle, into Eagle Kick and does nice damage. Or do an EX Eagle kick instead that leads to more juggle potential.

^^^^
And in this vid, im Counter Crushing with Roundhouse, then --> Strong (Cancel) V-Trigger, into various juggle options.

You can control the direction he moves. If he’s going backwards, then you’re hold back.

For the first combo you can cancel better things into the v-skill, st.HP for instance for more damage. That doesnt really make the v-skill good because you can use it in one combo. You could do a similar combo but instead of st.HP into v-skill cr.HP st.MP and only lose around 15 damage.

In the second video again all the combos you do with CC st.HK into f+MP cancelled are worse than CH st.MP st.HP, less damage and stun. While it wasnt in the video I realized his CH st.MP ST.HP xx v-skill kick HP Mixer is I think the best crush counter combo if youre near the corner. If you have EX st.HP xx EX Fireball xx v-skill roll cr.HP st.MP xx MK Eagle kick is still the best.

The combos in the third video are pretty bad damage and stun compared to what you can with v-trigger and a crush counter. Without spending meter you can just do CC st.HP cr.HP xx v-trigger then end with v-skill into divekick/ex divekick.

All in all I still dont know how you think his v-skill is good or how he is top tier. Im helping your argument by giving you even better combos, though. It seems you are inexperienced as far as Rashid goes. He has decent footsies and good frametraps but aside from that he isnt anything special. There are characters like Necalli who can do the same thing but much better.

Please. No one is truly “experienced” with Rashid right now, and certainly not you. Name five v-skills in SFV right now more versatile than Rashids?

Experienced isnt the right word but I have put in a lot of time between the betas and release this week. I wont deny that it is versatile but there are many that are more useful to the respective character’s gameplan than Rashid’s is.

Necalli, Birdie, Dhalsim, Fang, Zangief, and Laura all use theirs a good amount each match. Then there is Cammy’s which goes through fireballs way better than Rashid’s and is + on block instead of easily punishable.

We’re just going to have to disagree.

Laura, Zangief, and Cammy’s V-Skill aren’t more versatile than Rashid’s.

Zangief for example is simply super armor that can give you frame advantage to counter attack, along with a optional built-in counter punch that combos into his CA or clothesline.

True, Rashid’s roll kick is negative on block, but you don’t even have to commit to the kick. You can do an empty roll, which opens the door to a variety of mixups in different situations when rushing down or during opponent flip outs if used properly. Both the moonslault & the roll compliment Rashid’s “stick & move” playstyle and are also key to his most powerful combos.

The alternative combos you mentioned are good, however they’re based around HP CC or Counter MP, and mine are HK CC. So in the event of getting a HK CC, I’m going for what I recorded or a variation of it.

I feel his vskill and vtrigger are useful to his gameplay and goes well with his style and game plan. Hes definately a character that is not as effecient as say Chun or Karin but makes up for it in a diverse moveset overall with multiple possibilites. Im not saying hes top tier but I do feel as though hes a strong contender and can leave opponents scrathing their heads wondering what happend to their hp. Bottom line is the character still has plenty of time to develop and its up to us to show people what hes capable of. Let’s put aside what other characters can do better per say and focus more on Rashids strengths. Just my 2 cents.

Ok so after a ton more matches, and learning a lot more about the character, I’d say he’s fine (mid tier).

I was right in my initial prediction that far mk (whiff punish)-> v trigger would be huge, and IMO it’s an essential part of Rashid’s gameplan.

The other part is setting up tornados, which needs to be done midscreen via fMP cancel into qcf k (if they are spamming low attacks then you counter with standing roundhouse).

He has a scary corner game as well, you need to alternate between high wall jumps and the ones that go right back down to keep your opponent guessing.

Corner stuff with qcf k is is pretty obvious, it’s a decent vortex.

Having 0 lp tornado on block would really bring him in line with the top of the cast (Nash, Chun, Vega…), but for now it is what it is.
