btw my suggestion for ST is to play at speed of FACTORY FAST. That’s what they play in Vancouver too (just checked, was up there this weekend). It’s also the standard speed in Japanese tournaments. There is no frame skipping at this speed like there is at FACTORY FASTEST.
What the hell is FACTORY FAST/EST? I thought the speeds were turbo 1 through 6 or something… Are they dipswitch setting type things? /nub
I think zass is asking that we play on DC Turbo 2 as opposed to Turbo 3–the speed that all ST tournaments at Preppy’s have been using since we switched from CCC2.
I’m all for a globally unified format. However, only the powers that be (EVO staff and Japanese national tournament organizers) really have the say in this matter. It would be presumptuous for us to adhere to a Japanese standard when the rest of the US uses a different fixed speed. It also doesn’t make sense to follow Japanese guidelines if it means having a detrimental effect on our local players should they attend EVO. All those tournaments and training sessions would have been wasted; or at least better served if played at the EVO sanctioned speed.
If EVO does eventually opt to adapt to Turbo 2 with the release of HD, that’s another story. For the time being though, I really don’t think this thread is the relevant place for this discussion. As we are less than a week away from this tournament, I am personally against this.
Also, keep in mind that EVO 2k4 and Season’s Beatings (the last major and semi-major event to use the DC version of ST) both operated on Turbo 4. We’re already slowing the game significantly out of consideration for certain players.
I’m curious as to what the “series of special events” include. Are there gonna be money matches? Grudge matches? Musical performances? Combo videos like they show at EVO? Perhaps the organizers want to keep it a surprise. Sex tapes from my middle school days? Or, SURPRISE, there are no special events. . . .

Yes, I’d make the trip for these events alone. Count me in. If I ride all the way down to Portland to find things were any less than advertised, I’m raising hell. I hope the organizers live up to the billing.
Yeah, all the keep-away and zoning characters would get a boost with slower game speeds. I would imagine that Dhalsim, Guile, and Old Sagat benefit the most from such a shift in the environment.
Again, not only is this a discussion for the Evo section, even if the national organizers announced that Evo2k8 would be played on DC Turbo 2, I would probably be opposed to a format change so close to the actual event.

It’s not slow as fuck :). And I’ve talked to Seth and Tom Cannon about the speed issue, the only reason they did speed 3 in the past is that it’s what they did in the past. They aren’t married to it, and they said for next evo they will do what people want.
I just like factory fast because it doesn’t skip frames, I think the game is more accurate that way.
Dude, compared to modern games. . .actually, compared to SNES games, Turbo 2 is slow as fuck.
So according to our data, sample speeds are:
USA FREE SELECT 2: 51.91
USA FREE SELECT 3: 50.76
Let’s look at the slowdown ratio:
50.76/51.92 =~ 0.98
So factory fast is within 2% speed of factory fastest. That means that a 49 frame event would instead happen in 50 frames… or one extra frame every 49 frames.
I think that’s a fairly negligible tradeoff to have no frame skipping. I don’t think it’s an accident that this is the tournament standard in Japan. It’s more accurate and precise.
Well I’d like to hear from more people on what they think. I don’t want to alienate any ST players with the speed we play on. Please just let me know your thoughts guys.

Just let me know what everyone thinks, I’ll tally up the votes and thats what we will use… I’m almost thinking we should just use the standard that has been used in the past because thats what people have been playing on.
I want to play on what i have been playing on for years and that is speed 3. Matter of fact, i think everybody should stick to the mode that has been played over here for years and that is speed 3.
My vote would be for Turbo 3 on DC, simply because we’re days away from the tournament, and that’s what we’ve been expecting the tournament to be using. I also vote that KabukiMono revert to his Kaela Kimura av. Lastly, everyone should post in this thread and make some noise for this tournament in the events section.
I didn’t mean that Turbo 2 was slow as fuck, I was just hypothetically picturing the slowest setting (turbo 1?) with Dhalsim. Though Turbo 2 is surely sluggish to someone who plays GG and tries to play Marvel. ST is already the slowest pace fighting game I play, though, so lowering the speed seems to make it dramatically slow. I can play 2 or 3, one speed setting difference won’t throw me off a lot - though I’d prefer to stick to 3 because that’s what we’ve all been playing…
I, and I’m sure many others, have been practicing on Turbo 3 and switching would be a serious blow to my execution
