This is Chousoku Henkei Gyrozetter, a recently released arcade game from Rocket Studio, developer of the Dragon Quest Monsters Battle Road series. An interview with the game’s development staff at GameBusiness.jp reveals that the game uses Unreal Engine 3.

Producer Ryutaro Ichimura (who also served as producer on the just released Dragon Quest X) explained the reason for the use of Unreal Engine 3. Rocket Studio had previously used its own internally developed engine. But Gyrozetter required HD visuals, which the studio’s internal technology could not support. This ended up being the studio’s first use of the engine.

Asked about Square Enix’s new Luminus Studio engine, Ichimura said that in the future Square Enix would like to use its internal engine, but two years prior when Gyrozetter’s development started, using Luminous Studio would have been difficult.

It may be a bit odd seeing Unreal Engine 3 used in a racing RPG. Director Ryuta Suyama acknowledged that the engine is meant for first person shooters, so using it for turn-based battles did cause some difficulties. It’s not really meant for quick changes between scenes. However, the racing part of the game gave no problems.

GamesBusiness also asked about future plans for the Gyrozetter franchise. A 3DS version has already been announced for Spring. This, of course, won’t use Unreal Engine 3, Ichimura said. The 3DS version of the game is an original RPG, completely different from the arcade version. Development on the 3DS version is progressing well.

Asked about the possibility of an entry in the series for HD platforms, Ichimura said that they may have to release the game on HD systems because they’re considering overseas developments for the franchise.

So does anyone here play Sonic and Sega All-Stars Racing? I’ve been going through it to get some achievements and I’m finding myself getting better at it. I hope that all that Transformed madness doesn’t lead to a weaken since of ability.

Also should I feel bad for skipping out on both of this holiday season’s big racers, NFS:MW and F:H?

Forza Horizon demo is out. Feels like NFS Pro Street as I asumed it would. Faggy commentator, and a general bleh presentation. However the gameplay, and graphics are still good is good, and music can be turned off.

This is the car list, taken from demo data mining (it is 1.7GB) or something. The same people got the demo data from Forza 4, and the was 100% on that game as well.

Engine swaps are still in, so that assumes modding is in? How much you can mod determines my purchase or not.

The carlist is as varied as Forza 4, but obviously many less cars. Notable: the only CTR they chose is the EP3…WTF?

I don’t understand some of you sim fans. Clearly this game isn’t Forza 5 so don’t even expect jack diddly. It’s just a big open road racer with lots of cars and silly events to choose from. Stop looking for anything else or you’ll just be disappointed. With that said, man what a pretty game Horizons is. Though I chuckled at it’s off road race.

I play plenty of non sim racers. Infact I’d say there are simply more non-sim than sim in existence. Other than bullshit like Split Second, Blur and Burnout, anything is playable to me, with licensed cars and manual trans.

Big open world non-sim racer with plenty of cars: Test Drive Unlimited 1 w/DLC. Open world racer with silly events: Test Drive Unlimited 2. Racer with cheesy ‘event presentation’ Need for Speed Pro Street,

More than anything, modding is a must. I could live with not modding in TDU1; it was a new experience. However, modding, unless the game is like TOCA, WRC is otherwise a necessity. I think not being able to mod in TDU2 is unforgiveable. The only other games I can forgive was Midnight Club 2, and Need for Speed HP (PS2).

Yeah but I think that Forza Horison is supposed to be hella casual though. At least that’s my impression. I dunno. I won’t be getting it though. I’ll stick with F4 till F5 comes out on the next console.

I spent a ton of money playing that game before the machines took a dump and didn’t get fixed. I had a white silvia that made the game easy to drift the entire race. Other then that, I’ve been getting back into GT5 and putting some drift time with the Honda Odyssey. I need to still find the right settings to make the van stable. I really want to see another Road Rash game in my lifetime.

And if not, why not? This game is being worked on by several key staff who worked on Blur, PGR and Split Second. You guys need to watch this gameplay.
