R.I.P Guilty Gear

Elaborate.

I wasn’t exactly mad, but more like agitated. For someone to think that the group of people who actually trying to get together and put an event for us to have FUN at, is ought to get them and in return to treat the Evo staff as a bunch of evil dictators is absurd. Boycotting Evo and Tropicana? This isn’t a dictatorship nor some kind of evil scheme, they’re putting an event FOR YOU, at a great cost and service. Yet you still have douchefuckers who can’t be grateful when someone gives them a great service like this. This isn’t evo’s fault, just because there are 10000000000000000000 people that play GG to show up doesn’t mean shit. If all of those people except like 20 act like idiots and don’t even show up to their own final then the Evo staff has every right to fuck them over and not include their game. I’m not even gonna go into any “good” reasons of why CVS2 was picked over GG, because frankly no one has too. That one fuckup is big enough to seriously affect GG’s stance at Evo, let alone the other shit you guys have been bitching about. Then this fucker has the audacity to suggest a boycott? Are you fucking serious? Like I said before, this isn’t some evil reign of terror or unjust thats being going on here. You don’t have to go to Evo, you don’t have to play GG, you don’t have to play GG at evo, so theres no reason to boycott. Of course maybe if wizard decides that GG won’t be in it because the players are (insert reason here), or the game is (reason) that is completely irrelevant and obviously not an actual just reason then maybe you have something. But thats not the fucking case. Most of you guys are gonna come ANYWAYS, just to have your own damn little BYOC tournaments. So it’s not even like you don’t have an event at all, if you guys really aren’t the fuckups you claim to be then how about you guys try running a side GG tourney that runs smoothly and maybe even better then the other actual games. Show and PROVE what you guys and do. That’ll impress the staff, show leadership and cooperation, and show that you guys are more then capable of having your game included and they would probably be glad to do so.

brawl will get CRAZY numbers and melee got crazy numbers before.
cvs2 is on its way out and needs a last blast.
the other games HAVE to be there.

HEY GUILTY GEAR PLAYERS: start some hype within your own community, get some beef/hype going, start doing ranbats with commentary, make a name for your top players, get that shit on youtube.
if you wanna see a tiny scene thats making its voice heard look at melty blood!!!
take some hints from them!!! set up a wiki, make some threads about who has the best eddie or dizzy or whoever!

here is a huge problem with guilty gear though as far as tournament scenes go: the scene is spread out and has console tournaments, not much arcade presence and all that. SO you can only get competition once in a while.
this WOULD be fine except that guilty gear keeps getting updated and the tiers changing radically so frequently that you would have to be getting constant comp to be good because you are periodically getting your vs. skill effectively RESET with new versions.

with 3s you have to learn every matchup to be good. its rare to even find a really strong yang sometimes or to get many rounds in of practice against a super beastly urien. but when i get those in, i can grow as a player from those rounds.
now imagine if these matchups were about as few and far between BUT now with version changes stuff is way different!!

i think that although some games like mvc2 and 3s get shit for being old games, one of the reason the level of competition so high is because people have soo much experience and can continue building on it.

as much as i like guilty gear’s constant new versions i think when it sits on one version for a little longer while sammy goes and does new different games itll probably get its evo slot. but not without mad HYPE!

You know, just for the record, I used to be part of the now small group that still thinks there’s some big conspiracy to keep GG out of Evo… but then I grew up, realized the error of my irrational thinking. I found myself thinking there was a big conspiracy that Evo staff hated GG a couple years back every time it was announced that Evo would be using an older version of GG, rather than the newest version (be it Slash or AC)… but after realizing that Slash would be at Evo instead of Accent Core, I thought to myself “Getting angry won’t really do myself or the community any good. What can I do to help the situation?”

A majority of the community wanted Accent Core at Evo; there was even a highly debated poll for it where staff and the community argued against one another (myself included) on if Slash should be at Evo or AC. Even though a small amount of GG players from the community, Evo staff members, and even people that didn’t even play the game (wtf???) voted for Slash, Accent Core won at something like an 80% I believe. Even with those overwhelming numbers, Accent Core was still not going to be at Evo. Naturally, I was really upset, but after a few days of thinking, I came up with a plan. Instead of being angry and publically displaying my disapproval on the forums like I had done in the past, I decided to take a more professional, personal route.

I contacted Evo staff, specifically James Chen, in hopes of clearing up some possible misinformation of ignorance regarding the bugged Japanese release of Accent Core (which was currently the only available copy). Myself and a few other players, which generally had more knowledge of Guilty Gear, the bugs in the JP release of Accent Core, and how much or little they affected the gameplay, lended our knowledge to Evo staff. With our combined efforts, Accent Core was at Evo World like most of the community wanted… and, finals issues aside, the tournament ended up being the best Evo GG tournament yet.

My point? Evo staff was kind enough to listen to me and other GG players and work with us regarding the Slash vs. AC at Evo issue last year. If they truly didn’t care about the game, they wouldn’t have gone through the trouble of listening to myself and some others. The whole conspiracy that the staff always has and always will hate the community isn’t anything but paranoia.

To be honest, I would be pissed too if I was Evo staff and those incidents during finals happened in my tournament. And frankly… I was pissed that it happened, and I’m not even Evo staff. While I do think they should’ve forgiven the community after we apologized numerous times after the tournament and stepped up our game over the year, their decision isn’t unwarranted. I don’t agree with the decision at all, but I respect it.

There is no conspiracy. Get over it. Man up. While GG is not an official game this year, it’ll still be there and it’ll be as strong as ever.

So much for a yomi layer above everyone else, you’re on the dead bottom. You aren’t helping GG any bit. Go back to dustloop and post your trash there.

Anyways, this year with GGAC absent can either help or utterly destroy the future possibility of GG at Evo. If people keep on posting just like the guy I quoted, I doubt Evo staff would even think about running GG again (I know I wouldn’t!). If you want your games at evo, show appreciation (and the fee would be nice), that’s all they probably honestly care about when they put your game up. This goes back to a basic showing up on time for finals (I know it’s beaten down!), and to not down talk the staff in their decisions. Don’t ever assume Evo owes you one thing (cept your prize money of course), That’s just showing ignorance, and it isn’t very appealing to anyone. Honestly for future posters if you don’t spend atleast 10 minutes or more reviewing what you wrote, don’t even post it, it’s probably really dumb.

Hmmmmmm… sucks that GG is absent this year.

Why? None really knows.
Funny thing is, looks like we will never get an actual answer with the Evo Staff giving more than one story on why GG is absent this year.

Ah, whatever.
I think a better question would be: would the GG community want the true answer?
'Cause I’m sure, in reality, that the true answer would stir up the GG community more than they are right now.

No need to post any more rants, really. Fighting a losing battle here guys ;o

Damn some of you need to stop crying like little bitches. If Evo staff didn’t want GG they never would have included it at evo in the first place.

Nice. Just so you know, the guy in question trashes GG on a regular basis, and wouldn’t have been caught dead playing it until this happened, which is really strange.

Which is better?

Friend: This game (GG) is awesome! Thanks for teaching me all this stuff! Is it gonna be at EVO?
Friend 2: No, cuz EVO hates GG and isn’t putting it on the roster.

OR

Friend: This game (GG) is awesome! Thanks for teaching me all this stuff! Is it gonna be at EVO?
Friend 2: Fuck yeah it will be. Gonna be the biggest fuckin’ tourney there - probably gonna be on the big screen with the rest of the games, too. There will be a bunch of awesome players there. You should go.

I think we know the answer.

Clayton: I really do appreciate your enthusiasm for the community, but I think you need to formulate your thoughts before you post things. You seem to get the bad rap for sounding like a whiny bitchy kid because you kind of free-form rant about how you feel - which is okay, but not terribly productive.

Redbeard: I just don’t think being upset about it is going to accomplish anything. I think it sucks that GG isn’t on the main roster, but hearing enthusiastic ideas from members of the EVO staff, as well as from within the GG community itself on how GG can still be bad ass at EVO just highlights how getting upset and whining about it won’t change anything.

I also VERY much agree with you on how the lack of warning sucks. In less than a week I found out GG might very very seriously not be there (despite the community’s time and efforts), and then suffered through a daily countdown, and then read through a lot of heated posts and random GG hate. Not my idea of pleasant.

SJ and deci FTW.

Spirit Juice for Guilty Gear Khan in 2009.

(I needed an Asian generic ruler title. Khan won.)

I was thinking… What happened if Cvs2 is not the last game for evo this year?

Well…I thought to myself, I will continue to play this game competitively and show everyone how fun, hype, and interesting this game can be. It has six grooves, and imo, its like 6 games combined into one. Kinda like Street Fighter Aniversary Edition. Cvs2 is an old game, and I still play it, because its like a game of chess to me. There are moves, counters, counter counter moves that I haven’t figure out or learn it yet. I only know the tip of the iceberg in Cvs2. The rest of the iceberg is still unknown to me.

:frowning: Next year I’ll have to add a bottle of wine to the list of presents to Wizard.

So are we on the same page or what?

And Frank, I did not know that. Maybe he was being sarcastic, I don’t know. But I still stand by my point of the GG players having to get over it. Sure I would have been disappointed if CVS2 didn’t make it, but I wouldn’t be complaining or bitching, or hell even staging boycotts over it.

Your opinion is wrong, and you should feel incredibly bad.

This is the best idea- quite simply, there’s too many games for there to be one national major, and there’s going to be MORE games next year- do you really think Evo’s going to have more games next year? Someone else is going to be pissed off next year- and it won’t be Capcom players. It’s pretty safe to assume that CvS2 will be gone and replaced with SF4, but other big games come out next year as well- like KOFXII, Blazblue, Tekken 6. I don’t see ST or Marvel being dropped, and 3s is very unlikely

Capcom games should be for Evo.

Other games for somewhere else. (Final Round, NEC?)

This way you don’t have to worry about the biases of the Evo/SRK staff- which do exist. (no one try to convince me otherwise, I’ve known this for years, based on some times I was out there in the past) The best solution to those biases is to do what they did several years, man up, and run your own shit so you don’t have to deal with it. If your game is big enough, and I think it is, it will work. It is the tourney of the people running it, so you have to either put up with their biases, or do the work that they did many years ago and try to make another Evo, which there is room for. (And yes, it would be hard work and take money- something which the GG community has)

One thing people aren’t understanding is that there is a rising segment of FG players- mostly new schoolers, who don’t like Capcom games. They’ll just play Arc mostly, and some SNK or dojin. Yeah, a lot of them do fit the GG stereotype, some don’t. Those people now have little to no reason to go to Evo. It’s hard to go cross-country, for one game. I don’t get it entirely, but I’m a bit of a dinosaur.

The one right thing that’s been said is Evo owes you nothing, but the GG community, especially this year, owes Evo nothing either.

/thread.

The huge problem with this decision was the attitude that came along with Evo’s reasoning and position. We don’t need a holier-than-thou stance that the GGXX community should be bending over and kissing their feet to include GGXX in the line-up.

Newsflash: Your tournament is not Jesus.

This is not news. I don’t remember them saying they were, either.

I’m a GG player, and I’m over it. Most of said GG players are over it, and already attempting to do something about it by organizing a fucking huge tournament at Evo; that is, after we run and play in the biggest tournament at Final Round. Yes, a few are still whining (and I see every reason for them to be pissed, even if it’s a dead issue at this point), but take that out on them, not the GG community as a whole.

Arstal: Stop talking. You aren’t helping anything, especially considering you don’t know the situation a tenth as well as you think you do. Your last post is proof of that.

The only holier-than-though attitude in this thread is yours. You seem to think that this game has to be in there and any reason it’s not is wrong. Shit’s been explained to you repeatedly, and you’re still crying about it and accusing the people who run it of being unfair, going so far as to pull excuses of your own out of your ass.

Newsflash: It’s not your tournament. Go take some Mydol and quit bitching.

Just a quick reminder.

Many people are complaining that the reasons for GG dropping aren’t good enough. Many people believe that they are indeed very solid. I do.

Either way, Evo does not have any obligation to run any tourney for any game. I don’t get this sense of entitlement. If the Cannons decide that MvC2 and 3S should be out, they will be out. If they decide that this is the last Evo, then this is the last Evo. It’s their tourney, and yet they are kind enough to help a lot of people with a lot of requests. Stop crybabing. Seriously, I can’t even understand how Inkblot doesn’t wake up one day, says fuck it, and turns Evo into a big Alpha 2 tournament again, with lots of fun for whoever enjoys the game.

This isn’t just a GG issue. The GG thing is but one symptom of the real issue- which is that other scenes aren’t independent enough. Maybe this is the kick in the balls that is needed for people to realize that you can’t rely on one group of people to run things nationally. (Particularly if said group has strong preferences against certain things- which was true back in the day, and is true now)

This is something I’ve known for a long time. The VF people get it- I don’t know about other games though- we’ll see if the GG people get it. They’re definitely in the best position to do something about it- which is why I’m pulling for them bigtime. The seedwork is there for this- certain regional tournies could be as big as Evo if they try hard it- I know FRXI is really trying, and I commend them for that. I’m sure other major regionals are as well.

That’s how the GG players can show support, not by boycotting Evo necessarily, but if they have limited funds, go to the places that support your game, and make them bigger then Evo. It’s good for the community for a while, even if it’s not good for Evo. No one except maybe Dark Geese is made of money and can go everywhere. So go where you’re welcome. I never said don’t go to Evo tournament itself- if you like the other games, or it’s close- have fun. Not showing up to Evo at all won’t change things this year, or probably ever. I just said that the GG community can make a statement that’s positive and mature, and the best way is to support the places that support your scene.

Look at it from the economics side. Assuming you like GG the most, you’re going to enjoy a regional tourney that has GG more then Evo. So maximize your utility and support the places that support your scene- which will encourage more to do so- and the market will take care of itself, and there will be no more controversies.
