Today I woke up to hear some very sad news. As of 3:00PM Today, 1/1/08, Einstein’s Arcade has shut their doors–forever.
This was very sudden for all of us. There was no notice whatsoever to the employees, and more importantly, the customers. Had we known something was going to happen, maybe something could’ve been done.
That having been said, this was Austin’s last arcade, and one of the last old-school arcades in the United States. All we can do now is try to carry on.
This is some seriously sad news. Been wanting to make a trip back to the Arcade for the local comp, no chance of that happening now. One of the last great Arcades in Texas. R.I.P.
I knew that someday it may shut down, and heard about it from Kai at the end summer that the Arcade might not last no longer than a year, but goddamn it seems so soon.
There ITG 2 machine was the best dance type machine ever! Hell, none can beat it.
And no more meeting random players for GG:AC at E’s =(
All we know is that the owner came in this morning and told the manager that the arcade was closing for good as soon as his shift ended, and to get ready to pack everything up this week to move.
It’s likely that the owner sold his space to another shitty retail chain so that the Drag can finish becoming an outdoor mall and Austin’s urban renewal into a clone of Dallas and Houston will be complete.
I work in Commercial Real Estate and my assumption is that the Landlord is trying to get more money because the drag is becoming more commercial and retail.
I hope E’s moves to another location and re-opens, it was probably the last true arcade in Texas.
I’m exceedingly depressed by this news. It seems so sudden. It had already been a couple of weeks since I had been there. I wish I had been able to go one more time before it shut down. It sounds pretty gay, but the majority of my teen and college years were spent in that arcade, it’s really hard to see it go.
