Chris Cornell, lead singer of Soundgarden and Audioslave, died Wednesday night, his representative told CNN.
Cornell, 52, was in Detroit performing with Soundgarden, which had embarked on a US tour in April. Brian Bumbery, his representative, called Cornell’s passing “sudden and unexpected” in a statement to CNN.
“His wife Vicky and family were shocked to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing, and they will be working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause,” the statement read. “They would like to thank his fans for their continuous love and loyalty and ask that their privacy be respected at this time.”
The Grammy-winning rocker had performed Wednesday night at the Fox Theatre in Detroit.
Cornell began his career in the Seattle rock scene forming the band Soundgarden in 1984, which was influential in the 1990s grunge movement. The group disbanded in 1997 and released a greatest hits compilation the same year.
In 2001, Cornell joined with three former members of Rage Against the Machine to form Audioslave. Their most successful single, “Like a Stone” released in 2003.
Cornell also sang the theme song to the James Bond movie "Casino Royale."
Soundgarden came back on stage in 2010 for festival performances and had recently started touring again. The band tweeted Wednesday night a quote from Cornell: “What I look forward to the most…is the camaraderie. It’s what we missed when we weren’t a band.”
Rocker Dave Navarro mourned the loss of Cornell, tweeting: “Such a terrible and sad loss! Thinking of his family tonight! RIP.”
Chris Cornell, lead singer of Soundgarden and Audioslave, hanged himself, the Wayne County (Michigan) Medical Examiner's Office announced Thursday in a statement.
Damn 2017. Soundgarden and Audioslave were some of my favorite bands.

Years ago, he wrote this song for a friend who passed away and played it in a band with Eddie Vedder. Probably a fitting thing to play on the day of his passing as well.

Tragic…Chris Cornell was one of my favorite singers.
Made great songs with Soundgarden, Audioslave, and his solo projects.
Remember jamming to Rusty Cage when I was playing Road Rash on the Saturn.
Spoonman, Blackhole Sun, Take it out on me…Cornell’s theme song for Casino Royale is my favorite Bond Song from the Daniel Craig era.
Rest in Power, Cornell.

At the very least, he was doing what he loved the most before he died.

Another thing, in that environment it also became important to always be pushing the envelope. That has gone back and forth over the years. Punk rock was the resurgence of that attitude, especially with the post-punk and indie scenes. If you weren’t doing something that someone hadn’t ever heard before, nobody wanted to listen to you. With commercial music now, whether it be pop, rock, or whatever it is, it’s so stringent. If Jimi Hendrix were to come out now with a song like “Let Me Stand Next To Your Fire,” the radio would never play it because it’s too aggressive. Too wild. That seems kind of ridiculous when you think about the fact that it’s 2011. We are more conservative about music now than we were back then. Why?
