Question about wires w/ Chimp

Im all ready to start dual modding my 360 TE with the chimp.

But im not entirely sure what wires I need. Could somebody shed some light on this?

Im not sure exactly what gauge or setup i need, and I want to attempt to do the solderless parts but i read that you need braided wire for that.

Could anybody w/ experience tell me what wires they used?

Thanks

22-24 awg is what i normally use

You need atleast 22-24 gauge stranded wires, I used 22 gauge for my install.

And to do the solderless trick, you need a small flat head screwdriver, but make sure not to over do the quick connects with the screwdriver to open them up (learned the hard way). If you do, just get some pliers and gently squeeze them back.

Ok, just to be sure, I can use stranded wires for soldering too right?

I was under the impression that you could only use solid wires for soldering.

So if i get 22 gauge stranded I’ll be good for the whole mod right?

Strip, then twist the strands together then tin them (heat the twisted wires and apply solder) - you won’t know the difference.

I use CAT5 for my soldering.

i used 28gauge stranded recently and it was way easier to manage the wires + route them.

Alrighty, I found this at radioshack.

Its 22 gauge stranded hookup wire, i was about to buy it but I wasn’t sure if there was a difference between hookup wire or other wires.

Just want to be positive before i drop money on it. I know I could probably find this cheaper online somewhere but im not in the mood to wait.

Also, do I positively have to tin the wires before I solder them to the chimp board? Or is that optional.

Thanks

It’s wire.

You don’t have to tin it, it just makes strands easier to work with.

i have those same wires. work fine.
but if you go to your local FRY’s, i would HIGHLY recommend their 26-28gauge. simply because the radioshack 22 is kind of stiff.

i don’t have a fry’s here

but thanks guys, ill get started on it and let you know how badly i fucked up

Don’t worry about it. And a quick tip, it’s much easier to solder the button inputs to the circuit board where the wires from the buttons lead to. Be sure to solder it to the end that is closest to the wiring harness, the other end is just ground. There’s a helluva lot more room to solder everything aside from up/down/left/right. That way, there’s also less room for error to kill your madcatz PCB.

I use 30 AWG solid-core wire. I also twist a pair of them together for GND and VCC (not necessary but I do it out of habit).

Well i got around to buying the wire, so i started part of it today. Well atleast tried to anyway. I bought 22 gauge solid.

After disconnecting the buttons and the joystick, i desoldered the usb cord from the te board by just tugging on it, because i dont have a solder sucker.

So after that i started to solder them back onto the chimp, which failed miserably. They were very short and i had problems maneuvering them to solder them. So I decided to extend the wires by soldering them to some of my own 22 gauge solid. All turned out sort of well, even though it was a horrendous soldering job. Might I add that I had no clue if this would even work, and im still not sure if it will.

Then I covered the joints up with electrical tape and used my new longer wires to solder them to the chimp board.

After I soldered the first wire in, I went to go solder the second wire, and the first wire broke when I was moving it around.

So now im a little pissed.

I decide to strip more off the first wire and try again, when I manage to poke it through the hole (which was covered with solder and a piece of wire) the other wire broke off.

So before i murder myself, i decided to take a break for now. I cut into the wire too much when I was stripping it.

any tips?

Which is why everyone recommends to use stranded wire, instead of solid.
Solid wire causes for what happen to you.

And why you not use the labeled RGWB spots?
They are there to make easier than to the USB jack spots.

22 gauge solid wire is terrible for this kind of job, they are very brittle and don’t handle being bent very well. Thats the reason why your stuff keeps breaking.

i guess ill try to make do with what i have then. i thought that solid would be better but i guess not.

i didnt know you could use the RGWB spots next to it, i guess ill use them then.

also, can the ground wire go into any of the two holes in the bottom middle?

Use the labeled spot of B in the RGWB.

i was talking about the big ground wire from the USB cable.

i just ended up soldering it to the bottom right circle with the metal ring
