His mix-up is not as aggressive though. You mix-up with Tatsu (short/heavy) and FA. Ryu still can’t X-up like Ken can because of his speed IMO, and you still have to very precise. His X-up range is longer though.
I’m telling you, Ryu’s game is zoning first, juggle second, then mix-up to boost those first 2 options…
If you can rushdown w/Ryu your good, but it doesn’t mean your using Ryu the best way.
That’s exactly how I approach Sagat with Ken. Walk forward and block. Throw in the occasional FADC… once you make it to f+mk range-things sway in your favor.
Tatsu combos. We need to use them and master them… DP knockdowns just don’t do enough damage. You’d have to completely own someone to kill them by using DP’s. The damage of TATSU added with the potential momentum damage afterwards is essential. Especially against characters hard to get in on like, Sagat.
In regards to Sagat. I think he should be throwing out Tiger knees. He should understand that once Ken gets within that ‘range’… Sagat’s FB zoning is just too risky. He needs to switch to Tiger knee assaults and change it up.
> I bring up this point of view because this is the challenge I’m facing against this one Sagat player. The things that have worked against Tiger knee strings are:
Block and let him do his string and read his tendencies.
This particular Sagat player liked to follow up Tiger knee with a cr.lp (so that’s one counter opportunity)
Sagat can mix-up this string and either repeat it normals and then with another Tiger knee… or go for a low Tiger shot after a cr.mk. It becomes a guessing game. I don’t like being on the receiving end of guessing games.
The only sure thing that worked as a counter… is right after the Tiger knee - you can DP or FA his follow-up. Need a high-priority attack, such as a special move, to beat out his follow-up. I’m just happy he didn’t stop the string there and bait out my DP.
As such - I’m just not experience enough against Tiger knee assaults. Is anyone here have knowledge of his strings? I have not used Sagat enough to know. Advice?
well the only advice I have is make sure you realize when Sagat’s Tiger Knee is safe on block, and when it’s not. Other than that, I don’t think there is a strategy. IMO, Sagat has an answer for just about everything Ken does. You just gotta outplay. yeah, Tatsu’s help w/damage, but you still have to usually be better than the Sagat player to win consistently. RH Tatsu is a risk since you land after your opp. I usually eat throws, or get a free punisher no in betweens usually. TU will beat YOU Every time, and EX TU beast EX SRK I believe. because gat has more options even up close, his predictability is less than Ken’s, so if your not crossing up, you will have a tough fight against a gd Sagat that mixes up tiger knee, c.mk TS, pokes, and his meaty sweep…
If Ken had an easier time getting in, it might not be so bad…but eat one EX shot, one throw, one TU–and Sagat can easily reset and zone you all over again.
A great watch.
Last match vs Abel was very good. His mix-up strings are very hard to defend against. High damage if you defend wrongly adding to the pressure. Both characters are aggressive, as such, both compete for domination.
I did learn one thing (WHICH IS GREAT!). When you meet the opponent in the air and counter him with a normal - you can land and dash on the ground to cross-him up when he lands. I will have to remember that.
A question that I would like your answer on… and opinion.
You seem to have a preference in DP’s for a string ender. Is this because of your preference for knock-down? Or you don’t like the paper, scissors, rock mentality of the TATSU.
I noticed you made extensive use of TATSU vs chun. Is it because of her inability to effectively punish after a tatsu as oppose to other characters?
Zangief - way too aggressive against him for my liking. I’m am however surprised on the amount of jump-ins you got away with. I get a nice crouching lariat every time. Or did his general strength as a zangief player did not scare you?
You seem to save your meter for FADC’s. I have a preference to use them for cross-up air.EX tatsu’s
I find that a cross-up ex tatsu (double hit) is very fast and surprising, hard to block, and can combo into with a cr.mk xxTATSU.rh.
I don’t care much for fadc’s into ULTRA as I’m unimpressed by the damage output.
As for tatsu’s against Abel, I simply didn’t know the matchup all to well at the time. Learning later that his hitbox is huge, I generally use tatsu much more later on against the same opponent. I actually like saving fadc ultra meter stock. Reason being, it’s a get of of jail card when your taking heavy block strings to rip out a potential counter-hit shoryu into full ultra. I later save any remaining stocks for a big damage ex-shoryu as anti air. Not to mention, FADC landing an ultra changes the whole tempo of a match.
If I remember correctly you can do c.lk, c.lp, s.lp, c.mk, tatsu against Abel because of his huge hitbox. (It doesn’t have to be EX)
Also I like your policy about meter management. I like to have 2 or 3 bars just in case. Two for a cancel and one for an EX tatsu/ hado/ srk. Plus fadc ultra just feels good! Even if the damage isn’t that great…
I do cr.lk, cr.lp, cr.lp, cr.mk xxTATSU.rh against everyone. It doesn’t miss very often for me. As long as you get a hit with cr.mk and cancel it to TATSU.rh - should hit.
I confirmed the combo tonight on…
Sagat, Bison, Ryu, Akuma and Dhalsim.
I’ve never really had trouble with it… it misses rarely.
As for the Chaos vs Mag match… I couldn’t watch it. Started getting dizzy in the back of my eyes. My eyes felt like… vomiting. Odd
Yeah - for sure!
Don’t do TATSU if they are in a crouching position… unless you started in a corner and just want to whiff intentionally to get out. In that scenario - I’d recommend the speed boost by ex.bar.
Of my whole history of doing TATSU combos… tonight was the only time that someone actually successfully punished.
I was doing the string and connecting against Sagat. I miss-timed the cr.mk which he crouch blocked and my TATSU.rh went over his head.
Most people don’t catch me and I’m safe. A good amount of time I take a 1-hit normal punish…
But this Sagat did a crouching TU xxForward.RH > ULTRA.
SON OF A BITCH!
Thats what happens to me sometimes…Ive just started to get the tatsu combos down a little more consistently, but I still have trouble doin this one: cr.fp > rh. tatsu…gotta get that muscle memory going.
