Nothing will solve the issue perfectly, apart from the complete unacceptable of the perfect police state. Why people don’t attack the mental health angle is that it is at it’s core a possibility - if we are to be taxed (which is violence anyway), better to use that money to provide people who need it with psychological care instead of taking away their guns, which is just basic oppression that largely ends up targeting the innocent with sound minds anyway. The mental health angle is the positive one, “hey, we have a problem, we might well provide better care for those who don’t feel well” (Here in Finland in one of our recent school shootings the perp had literally sought mental care and gotten none), instead of “we have a problem, here’s one superficial sign of it, BAN THAT SHIT.” The difference in attitude is enormous.

Just trying to balance out the racism. I love when people use things like this and the Mosque shooting as a ticket to be racist against Whites. We Black people hardly have strong ground to stand on when it comes to shootings and things of the criminal nature.
I live in Newtown, Connecticut. It is seriously bizarre to see my hometown, the school where i played little league baseball, and st. Rose church where i made my confirmation on national tv, this whole thing seems surreal. I drove home crying and screaming on the top of my lungs because I can’t fathom how this could even happen. Luckily none of my family was hurt. My best friend’s nephew was going to afternoon kindergarten when this happened. Thank god he wasn’t hurt. I just wrote a paper on unfathomable evil in the human race, and now this happened. I feel so sick inside I don’t know what to do.
Which is my point. What are the arguments against gun control? Some major ones are:

It won’t completely stop these incidents. Yeah, but it will help a little. A better health care system won’t completely stop these incidents either, but it will help a little (hopefully even a lot)

Crazy people will still get guns. Maybe, but gun control can only make it harder. It’s something. Crazy people will also be able to pass as normal and escape the mental health net.

It doesn’t get to the root of the problem. Neither does mental health treatment, really. I don’t know if anyone knows the real root of the problem, but friends and family members won’t always be able to help someone working 60 hours a week with massive debt and nothing to look forward to.
If we keep trying to find the root of the problem and don’t accept anything less, nothing will change. So the situation is complicated and can’t be solved entirely by gun control or increased attention on mental health. Fine, but what other attempted solution gets immediately dismissed for not being a foolproof panacea (not saying you do this personally, of course)? I can’t be the only one who thinks it’s weird.

Oh, I didn’t answer your questions about that because at present I wasn’t looking to. Simple as that. I was just addressing the first notion that people were “angry” at gun control rather than just “tired” about talk of it–more gun banning–leading to fucking nowhere time and time again.
Since you ask, though, I actually already sort of answered that particular problem that I put in bold, but I can understand how it was easy to miss since it was the very bottom of the first post I made, which was very long and had multiple quotes. That said, what you point is the reason–besides that fact that you well know I’m a tremendous asshole–I was being sarcastic about ironboy89’s plea for people to discuss mental health: people aren’t going to be able to discuss that any more civilly and intelligently than gun control, especially as quickly as many Americans unfortunately lump taking care of anyone else with “socialism” and the surely Satan-spawned ills of that great evil. (SRK seems better about this. Seems.)

It’s also why I mentioned some fear-mongering bitch that CNN had on about…five or six hours ago already who kept talking vaguely about “improving laws to get people help” and how we had too much “protection against people not being taken care of until they did anything.” It was to the point where you could easily read into her saying “Big Brother should basically be able to institutionalize anyone who even so much as seems mentally ‘abnormal’.” This even though we both know, as you point out, that mental health definitions tend to be ambiguous as it is even when they don’t change–homosexuality was still listed as one not too long ago. Given how many kids have been damaged by Ritalin and shit like that such as kids obviously being a threat if they’re “angry” or “wear all black”, your point’s a valid concern…that I felt I already answered, however vaguely. So…yeah.

Not really. I vaguely remember you aren’t American, right? Well, if you aren’t, then I can understand why you think the media would influence this since they’re not actual news. Even if you are American, as I was saying to HD-man, I can understand not watching the tripe that is most TV, especially the 24-hour “news” networks.
However, the media in America literally almost never talks about mental health. Even in instances like this, as various others have already pointed out, the most they’ll do is talk about how “sick” someone is or they “snapped” as a buzzword alongside “tragic” and “unthinkable” and then have an “expert” or two on such a thing for at most a couple of days. And then the media will spend the other 55 minutes of every hour foaming at the mouth over blaming something else (usually video games), getting gory details, talking about gun controversy and generally tripping over themselves to be the first about every minute detail, no matter how wrong or repetitive; lately they’ve been including showing people’s social media reactions, especially from (sigh) Twitter, in the mix. Gotta keep that dead horse fresh after all.
So no, no one said anything about mental health because, as goodm0urning already pointed out, it’s something Americans have been conditioned to really never think of at all until it bites them in ass. Seriously, the only time that mental health tends to get mentioned a lot otherwise is in the sense of veterans killing themselves after they come back from wars and even then, at best they talk as much if not more about the suicide and other, more tangible problems like unemployment as much as they do the PTSD and such. Hell, even when local news had been talking about attacks, one fatal, happening at a mental health institution, it was always only about security and not more how to help the people or why these particularly “crazy” people, who usually aren’t violent, were so damn violent; there was vague talk about some of them being there because they faked having mental health issues and so were just violent sociopaths or psychopaths, but that’s digressing…
So, yeah, this isn’t really media-influenced at all unless we’re counting the vacuum created by paucity of actual American media “discussion” of mental health as influencing people now, which is entirely possible, but not in the way that you’re thinking is the problem.
