Legally owned firearms were collected and destroyed. There is a rather pertinent piece of information in the article you linked. The UK firearms ban happened after somebody opened fire in a school, killing 16 children and a teacher. Lessons were learnt, a ban came in to effect and nothing like that has happened in the UK since. Nothing remotely similar. I think the most applicable case was a shootout between 2 rival gangs in London roughly 4 years back. It ended with 5 degenerates dead and no civilian injuries. We have mostly cunts shooting cunts, rarely. Gun crime has happened afterwards with illegally owned firearms, most of which I would guess are brought illegally in to the country due to our current open borders policy. For obvious reasons those are a lot more difficult to track and dispose of. If you are caught with one you face a long prison sentence. If you use one, you can enjoy rotting in a cell with a life sentence. They remain a problem, criminals still have illegal firearms. They mostly use them on other criminals regarding other problems that we all have in our communities, like drugs.
It is very different to say, somebody stockpiling legally bought guns and ammo to mount an attack. That is a serious concern for any community anywhere in the world. Doing something like that is part as easy as your laws make it. It hasn’t happened here since firearms were made illegal, which should go some way in proving a ban on firearms would have some affect. The ban on firearms in the UK was and still is met with praise. Personally I think that is food for thought. You may not, because I really sense we are on opposite ends of the spectrum on this subject.
America will never Outlaw Guns. Ever. It’s just rooted too deep in your country. You will have NRA 2nd Amendment Nutjobs preaching away at any such proposal.
America needs to focus on mental health care in young teenage men, quickly. This is one hell of a wake-up call to say “No More” enough is enough with this shit. I don’t even live in your country and it shreds me to see so many young children were murdered by a lunatic with a gun.
Usually the horrible jokes don’t involve the deaths of kids from the US and A.
Can’t make fun of the kids, kids are the future. USA forever. THIS GUY KILLED THE FUTURE. WHAT IF ONE OF THOSE KIDS WERE GOING TO CURE CANCER? HE JUST KILLED KIDS AND HELPED CANCER. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
People forget that social media and new media are part of “the media.” And as people drift away from traditional media outlets, they will find themselves surrounded by a group of people with even lower standards of accuracy, and biases which they consider valid by virtue of existing.
…Well, I’m horrified to learn that apparently they’ve been reporting on this for eleven straight supposedly, which is four hours longer than I thought that they’d been running the already obnoxiously long non-stop coverage they’ve been giving this despite their relative lack of information.
How…the…?
Wait. Nevermind. I already know the answer to this.
Fixed because, really, the shooters have been (males) of all ages, but America’s mental health care in general is a joke, especially for veterans of war.
I’d fix this too to say "this is just another wake-up call to “No More” that will get ignored again, like always, after the outrage dies down in a week", but that seems slightly…rude?
So, instead I’ll just ask a question since I was under the impression you were American: What land do you hail from, Bear of Hugs?
How about we focus on mental health AND try to rethink our gun laws and their enforcement? Is that so hard? Why is the topic immediately shut down and why are so many of you actually *extremely angry *at even the thought of gun control, as evidenced by some of your posts?
Where are the posts saying that it’s often impossible to tell when someone’s mentally unstable until they do something like this? Where are the posts saying that plenty of innocent people will be deemed insane by an increased focus on mental health? Where are the posts claiming that schools have been focusing on mental health and self esteem for the past 30 years and it doesn’t seem to have an effect? Where are the posts saying that it’s much less realistic to expect an effective, nationwide campaign to keep people from becoming angry and murderous than making it harder to get an assault weapon? Yet there are plenty of posts saying equivalent things about gun control, or even equating gun control with a ban on guns.
If you post links and make reasonable arguments against gun control, fine. Good for you for making an attempt at an actual discussion. If you just come here and post “LOL IDIOTS a guy with a shoelace can kill people too!!!”, then congratulations on not having the mental capacity to even come up with your own thoughts, because you know that’s just a slogan you picked up somewhere else.
I think people are getting so “pissed off” and “angry” about the gun control shit because a) way too many people suggesting it are acting like banning those types of guns (or even all guns) solves the problem and will forever keep them out of hands these people, b) it gets brought up constantly every time something like this happens like it’s some brand-new solution and c) yet no one does shit about it one way or the other. This shit is just tiresome, both gun control and/or ban talk-wise and this type of incident-wise.
By the by, I don’t think anyone’s that brought up bettering mental health is against stricter gun control or even just talking about gun control in general (provided we don’t have to deal with aforementioned types of absolutist people). We’re just not under the illusion like some people here who act like guns are the only problem about these types of messes and thus aren’t delusional that even strictest gun control is going to 100% eliminate stuff like this.
Things are hardly ever that simple unless they involve killing people in droves ironically.
Ah, so you do admit your jokes are usually horrible and were only adding a disclaimer because of the “seriousness” of this thread? I understand then.
Actually while the US Homicide rate is high compared to the Western World, the USA’s crime rate is actually incredibly low. You’re more likely to get assaulted or raped in Europe than you are in the USA but you’re more likely to get shot in the USA.
Somehow I think the 1% were responsible for this – reaping profits from loose gun control laws i suspect. Blame everything and lets start feeling better!
Ok, I don’t know how many people suggested a complete ban on guns thinking it will solve the problem 100%, and I agree that’s not reasonable, but you didn’t answer my questions about the lack of pushback against the mental health solution. It’s ill-defined, won’t completely eliminate shootings, and a much less enforceable, imo, solution with serious negative consequences for normal people misdiagnosed. So why hasn’t there been a single post attacking a mental health comment on similar grounds as a gun control post? I’m serious- why haven’t we seen a post saying that improving mental health care isn’t a solution because it won’t stop these incidents? I know why- because the media pays lip service to mental health care and you’d be hard-pressed to see a news station pushing back hard against it. But you will see that when it comes to gun control, and that’s reflected very well in this thread.
I don’t remember anybody saying that addressing mental health is an issue of enforcement or punishment by diagnosis. Most people haven’t said much about it at all, save for recognizing the sorry state that our mental health care is obviously in.
Of course, I did mention the need for free and 100% accessible mental health care, plus MADD-style public advocacy directed to friends and family members of the mentally ill. I don’t know if that’s the kind of definition you’re looking for, but I was kind of hoping the conversation wouldn’t stop there.
