I’d like to believe your story over what Sony has told us, but the PR hit that Sony is taking for this outweights any revenue lost for free content online. Either way they are losing money, but the PS3 is now forever tarnished b/c of this incident. If what you say is true, Sony would have come up with another story if only to protect the integrity of the PS3.
This “story” by Sony, as you claim, will set them back now and for the next several generations. None of that is worth losing some dollars on the PSN network due to free content.
Not to mention the revnues lost for 3rd party companies that depend on the Xbox and PSN to be online to sell their DLC and other content. Their opinion of Sony also took a sever hit that may never recover.
I know man…I spoke too soon and I got blown up for it. But regardless PSN was originally down b/c of Codename:Rebug…Sony caught on to this and shut PSN down to fix the problem…The hackers got pissed and hacked into PSN to obtain everyones information to subsequently sell to to spammers and ID thieves.
The reason I thought that Sony was full of shit when it came to compromised accounts is because they have still not let the public know about Codename:Rebug. I caught a lot of heat well deserved heat for that way of thinking in the comments section of the original story. I was wrong, and this is a much bigger problem than I first realized
I’m sure everyone will be double checking their credit card bills & using PSN cards…when it gets back online.
Well I closed my credit card few days ago and I’m expecting a new card in about 5 days. However, my only dilema is that I’m being slowly pushed to buying a xbox360 instead but not sure just yet.
No doubt. Sony will see a HUGE decrease in the amount of business from the PSN. Those PSN cards may be harder to obtain as everyone begins using them to buy. Sales will go down if customers have to wait to go to a retail store before buying anything instantly at home.
That may be the eventual downfall of the PSN long term.
You’re right. I failed to realize the potential of selling information to others.
Just to add to this, you should change any account anywhere that uses the same password as your psn password and your email as a login (or a variation thereof).
A fraudster could easily automate taking your email address and psn password and test it against popular sites (for example, paypal, facebook). Sites that don’t use email logins could be attempted by taking the part of your email address before the ‘@’ symbol. For example, if I were ‘PJC@SHORYUKEN.COM’ someone could simply take the ‘pjc’ part along with my psn password and test it against whatever other websites.
tldr: Change your password on any website where you might have used your psn password. If you don’t remember your psn password, consider changing them all.
^ Yeah, that’s the truth but most people don’t want to be bothered! I tried to keep it simple with the most important bits and just leave it at that, haha.
Apparently the FBI is involved now. No need to link a particular news article. Just search Google for “fbi psn” and I promise you’ll get plenty of results.
from the comments on the SRK frontpage article about this
seems kinda far-fetched to me, but stillll, i mean, who knows what to believe? unbelievably ugly if true.
i was only sort of humming and hawing about changing my CC before, but i think i probably will.
Does deactivating my account help to avoid more info loss? or do hackers really only care about the credit cards
lol @ people who think this Overclock.net - Overclocking.net - View Single Post - [PSX-scene] PSN Database containing 2.2million Credit Cards now up for sale!
is real.
Sony confirmed CWW2 numbers were not in their database since they aren’t required to be known by them. Also, who the fuck tries to sell a database they stole from Sony, back to Sony. And who the fuck would sell the database in one large sum? Let alone, to the hacking community, because we all know they have cash lying around for black market shit like this.
Umhh, well, okay. No question is a stupid question. I really do mean that. But I apologize in advance: you’re going to get a stupid answer! Hahah.
You can only ever guess at what the goals and motives are/were of the people who hacked their way on in. Just make sure you change your PSN/email/whatever passwords smartly; this seals any access they would have had by being able to log in to your stuff as you. Beyond this and whatever other information they may or may not have already stolen, deactivating your account will not protect you any further from this incident.
Like, if you need an analogy, it’s like criminals broke into your office building, and then stole a spare copy of the key to your office from the janitor’s closet, and then some time later the police chased them out but didn’t catch them. You don’t know if they already went into your office or not; nothing loooks out of place, but how can you be sure that nobody’s already snooped through your filing cabinet and/or made copies of anything? Well, what’s done is done, and you can’t change the past, and it’s not like they’re still in the building or something, so the best you can do is change the lock.
I suppose you could deactivate your account if you wanted to boycott Sony or something, or if you are concerned that they will be hacked AGAIN in future. Personally, I’m not planning on doing anything of the sort, but I understand if anyone else feels the need to.
The analogy here I guess would be quitting your job because you think your office should have had a better alarm system and sturdier locks on the doors and bars over more of their windows. Maybe that’s justified and maybe it’s not. It would probably depend on how much you like your job and what kind of stuff you keep in your office!
YouTube - ???Anonymous’ Message???
lulz, if this is real, consumer entitlement at it’s finest.
Who was that dude that fueled all of this, Geohot? Fuck you.
Anonymous and their stupidity videos.
NO DOG I HACKED THEIR ACCOUNT AND POSTED THAT VIDEO c
All this waiting is killing me
I lost 10 days of PSN Plus. I hope I get more days!
you know what I think I might switch over to Xbox if my sh!t gets stolen!
Phew… Man, This shit is really drawing on me. I’ve contemplated Suicide Twice now (not really) over this loss.
See, The night before PSN Went down, I was chillin’ with my buddy, and we go to the store and I finally by Super Street Fighter 4. However, my buddy kind of blows at fighting games, so I let him play Fallout New Vegas while I dicked around on the computer. I see the ‘You have been signed out of playstation network’ sign and shrug. It happens. So he leaves, I finally pop in street fighter, and get the ‘Playstation Network is Down For Maintenance.’ Message.
Day one.
I realize that Sony is being cool. They’re just adding in some kick ass updates that’ll totally rock my socks. Maybe online play won’t suck anymore!
Day two.
I sigh in depression, seeing that it’s still down, but then raise my head up high. PSN Must be having a great over haul!
Day three.
Something’s wrong, and I can feel it in my soul. PSN’s still down, but I’ve got the internet and an online fighting game called Rumble Fighter to keep my preoccupied. But my friends on there who play MvC3 With me are worried as well (also calling me a suck ass because they think they’re better than me; Ha!).
Day Four
I slept all day. Didn’t even check.
Day Five
I have a razor in my hand, it is dangerously close to my wrists, before I mistakenly drop it and hit up a search as to why PSN is down. Then I hear the initial rumors of how people were getting shit for free. Suddenly I refuse to pick up the razor…
Day Six
I’ve effectively slit my wrists. But I stopped the bleeding and played more online fighting games.
Day Seven
I OD’d on Crack. Slept the rest of the day.
Day Eight
I had a dream where Dan Hibiki and I fought off countless hordes of salty gamers using our expert skills of Saikyo-Ryu. Then Dan turned to me and said ‘Main Me, Andrew. You can win tournaments with our AWESOME SKILLS!’ And I said ‘YES DAN! I’LL DO IT FOR YOU!’ Then I woke up, turned on SSF4, And started learning how to FADC into Ultra Combos.
Day Nine
I’m legally dead for a short amount of time. Then I come back to life, and realize that hell exists. It’s called ‘No PSN’
Day Ten
I’ve slit my wrists yet again. The bleeding motivates me to learn how to do some cody combos using Crack Kick. Then I post here.
Day Eleven… Who knows…
