No its not a cool story, its actually pretty freaking bad story bro.

Joystiq report supports my theory…

Rumor: ‘Rebug’ custom firmware enabled ‘free’ PSN downloads, forced Sony’s network shutdown | Joystiq

Your All Free Now !

Dude that was reported in my original post.

The Joystiq rumor report is NOT in your original post…I’m not going to troll your post anymore, don’t get salty and don’t take this personal. I just don’t want people to panic B4 they really have to.

You do know that PSN cards didn’t become widely available until like two years ago. Anyone who had PS3s before than had to use their credit cards to make any purchases on PSN.

You need to get your information correct before trying to spread assumptions that have been founded incorrect already. The joystick rumor report isnt linked in my original post cause it isnt the only source of this happening and not the first to report it. I knew this yesterday when everythng broke on Neogaf. However, i failed to link it cause I thought it was already part of my original post. No one here is getting salty or taking it personal. Im not the one that got screwed over by Sony.

Thanks for making a thread PJ. I PM’ed Keits about it last night, not sure if you already had. It’s up on the frontpage now. Says you’re the author! Hahaha.

For people who are talking like this is not a big deal, I fucking promise you that this is a BIG DEAL. I honestly don’t know how any of you could even think for a moment that it’s not a big deal. Maybe you didn’t read that thing?? A company that big with that may users is not going to tell all of its users to change their passwords without due fucking cause. Do you realize how bad this makes Sony look??!?

Unsurprisingly, Sony is being very guarded and tight-lipped about revealing details, and has been employing the carefully-worded-corporation-press-release style with all updates, but they put it out there in no unclear terms. The PS Blog post (yes the official one) prefaces that huge letter by saying they’re going to send the same huge letter in email form to all email addresses associated with a PSN account.

I used to work in the account takeover department (ie. stolen ID recovery) for a verrrrry popular internet company. I realize that it doesn’t make me a godly authority on this particular subject matter, but I guarantee it gives me more experience with this than you. Please fucking trust me on this. I just don’t want to see anyone get screwed over because they doubted the severity of this or worse, they’re just being lazy.

  • Everyone on PSN should change their PSN password.

  • Everyone who’s every bought anything on PSN should monitor their credit card activity for fraud.

  • If the email account registered to your PSN account uses the same password, you should change that as well. Otherwise, an identity thief will be able to take over that email account as well, and through there, all your other web accounts that are tied to it, by using the “Forgot your password?” link that exists on pretty much every website ever. Online banking, PayPal, any other email accounts, your god damn SRK account.

There are millions of PSN accounts out there, and Sony has no way of knowing with certainty how much or how little user data was actually stolen, but the point is that any given account could have been compromised. The odds that you as an individual will get your shit jacked is probably pretty small, but the risk associated with that tiny odd is huge.

What exactly may have been compromised? Well, just coming out and saying “everything” is a very non-PR-friendly way of explaining it, so instead they just listed off everything individually.

  • your name
  • address (city, state, zip)
  • country
  • email address
  • birthdate
  • PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login
  • handle/PSN online ID
  • your purchase history
  • any information in your profile
  • billing address
  • credit card number and expiry

Seriously, what else is even on your PSN account? That’s everything!

Oh, and if you honestly don’t give a shit about anything else in your life other than video games, they could steal your games and DLC too. “Nooooo, my costuuuuumes!!!”

Thats awesome!!! Thanks dude! Im just trying to help everyone from being scammed. The faster we all know about this the better prepared we can be to avoid fraud or identity theft.

For anyone interested in taking legal action the Rothken Law firm has filed a class action lawsuit against Sony

iv only had psn for 18 months, if this is tru imagine the multiple lawsuits lol sony will be finished

I’m going to get UltraDavid to be my lawyer

Sony Sued Over PlayStation Network Hack – InformationWeek

Warning: Negative posts will result in warning/infractions or an instant banned (1 week). Stop now or face the consequence.

Nothing to add but to repeat the warning to use Pre-Paid cards when buying games or items on ANY gaming network. You minimize the loss of personal money that way.

Oh, and keep all e-mail contacts and buy records of whatever you pay for.

I’d have more to say about Hackers in general but frankly I’m not so sure people would take what I’d have to say on the subject the right way.

If some of you haven’t gotten it through your thick heads yet, hackers are thieves. There’s no grand political statement or any such nonsense… and please spare us the notion that they’re striking against evil corporate entities! Those of us with jobs all have to pay the Evil Empire around April 15th every year whether we like it or not…!

Sony will suffer like it should. Yes, they were arrogant… but so were a lot of people using PSN like it was the most secure thing in the world.

You cannot depend on total online security because there’s always going to be an immature troll or experienced crook who will figure out a way to crack it. All it takes is someone with too much time or their hands or a tremendous chip on their shoulder to do this… This has been going on for at least 20 years now!

Just don’t make the mistake in presuming hackers give a damn about your emotional and financial well-being… If they really cared about other people, we wouldn’t be seeing record thefts online all the time…

I received the promised email at about 3:30 PM PT today; I’m assuming that everyone else has already received theirs or can expect to receive it shortly.

oh yeeeeah?

well check out THIS

something that is so sassy and so badass that i wouldn’t want any children to see it

:blah:

I hope next week this would be cleared up.

Wanna see something cool?!?!
Check your profile.

As for the records. I doubt the hackers will pull a stunt like this. Getting millions of credit cards and personal information. Do they really wanna face a high consequence in jail? After all, Sony will PAY detective to get their ass.

You fail to realize something…

Think of how much money they can get selling that information to others…I don’t think they care to use it.

Is anyone else having trouble logging into their PSN account on the Playstation website? My computer’s giving me a warning when I click the sign in button saying that the webpage has insecure content.

Never been giving me that warning before.
