I was saying to Hawkingbird that I won’t spend money mentioned previously to play only SF5 having a good PC, that’s all. I can afford a bad PC support for a while anyway. Soon or late I’ll have to get a PS4/PC stick to play tournaments anyway.
The hard way is that Sony is putting the money, so they have to promote console tournaments and that stuff, though.
GTA5 is a benchmark example, we’d have to spend less to get fighters working is the point.
Well let’s crunch some numbers. How many setups are at tournaments?
Then we’d have to see how much is saved on rigging every participant’s controller vs the cost of the setups.
Then we’d have to compare price between PS4 and a comparatively priced build and see which is cheaper.
But the truth is you’re right, people will probably just go for console because money controls the big name TOs and the big name TOs dictate what the players do.
So goodbye half of the stages and good controller support, I hope Mr. Wizard enjoys his royalty check.
Consoles will always be simpler for tournaments, plug it in and good to go, somethings wrong with the PS4 swap it with a backup one instead of messing around with background programs, offline Steam, vsync on or off(will have ugly tearing), settings like setting pre-rendered frames and whatever AMD’s equivalent is, drivers if someones stick isn’t plug and play, USB polling rate to make sure it’s got low input delay, Aero on or off to lower input lag.
SFV will be out in 6-8 months, people that want get into tournaments has time to start saving for a PS4 stick, or padhack. Or maybe SFV will work with PS3 sticks.
I could care less if PC wasn’t lead tournament platform and I say it as PC-only player.
It’s of course (like already stated), because of PS4 being cheaper than new PC and personally, because Capcom at least delivers SFV to PC at the same time and with cross-platform capability. USFIV doesn’t has extremely popular playerbase on Steam but it’s healthy. Mentioned cross-platform helps PC very much, since playerbase grows, as well as community. PS4 being tournament standard isn’t something that I’d complain about, not in any case.
On top of that, I’m 99 % sure that PS4 / PC compatible sticks (like Qanba models for instance) are coming in the future.
PC’s are not viable in terms of logistics for the way current FG tournaments are run. It’s unreasonable to expect adoption of the platform as a tournament standard at this point because:
The community is already invested in consoles.
The community is generally ignorant of PC/PC hardware (but this is slowly changing).
It’s expensive/troublesome for TO’s to start buying and setting up PC’s.
Tournaments are run in such a way that setting up PC’s are a hassle.
The advantages are not as apparent/don’t outweigh this hassle.
SFV in particular is Sony-sponsored and while we don’t know the extent of their contract it’s safe to assume Capcom will continue to use PS4’s for their CPT for a long time.
The day FG’s go truly e-sports is when PC’s becomes viable/preferred. Evo would be a nightmare for setting up hundreds of traditional PC rigs but invitationals like Capcom Cup are doable. Even then you would need a reason to run games on PC and I believe as aspects like the more consistent performance as well as lower input lag become more apparent to the community over time this criteria will be fulfilled. Going PC, you additionally open up the opportunity for more sponsorships (due to accessories and parts) as well as having a broader worldwide appeal since consoles are non-existent/irrelevant in certain places of the world (like China and Korea) compared to PC’s. The biggest games in terms of e-sports are all run on PC. Either e-sports will necessitate/encourage the switch to PC’s or switching to PC’s will facilitate the process of a certain FG becoming a bigger e-sport. This is inevitable for any FG that wants to become huge but I don’t see PC’s adoption as a tournament standard happening for at least half a decade, probably a full decade. Gaming PC’s are increasingly becoming smaller in form factor so even something like Evo could be viable with them if you bought a bunch of Alienware Alphas, for example.
Plus the other fighting games at tournaments are going to be PS4 standard as well and those games either don’t have a PC port or have a really shaky PC port.
Bringing a PS4 covers you for playing more fighting games at tournament standard than a PC does.
Other than some PC tower/steambox company sponsoring their own shit, you won’t see it be a regular thing. SFV being Sony sponsored and showing their company logo “for the gamers” after every damn trailer pretty much nips that in the bud. They will most likely make sure the majority of sponsored events are Sony run. PC is just displayed in text somewhere small if at all.
I would be welcome to the idea of, as a community, switching tournaments to PC in order to make it more e-sport friendly.
Do I care about MLG or any of the rest of those e-sport organizations? Hell no. They don’t understand, fundamentally, the FGC.
But PC is a much broader base then PS4, it has to be said. And with PC gaming comes PC manufacturer sponsors, and PC manufacturer money.
The other reason I like the PC is entirely selfish. I just bought a new custom made PC, which will easily run SF5. And I don’t want to buy a new arcade stick when the PS3 one I have is perfectly fine to use on PC.
This makes sense, but I’m sure Sony will fight to make sure this doesn’t happen. They brought SF back to life and they’re gonna make sure people know by pushing the issue of having Sony products at most majors. As long as the community is fine with the way the PS4 version runs they will be stuck with that.
In an ideal situation, some crazy move to PC if plausible would probably benefit us greater than Sony. It’s just logistically and realistically that’s not going to happen.
That push would have to come mostly from PC manufacturers going out of their way to bring PC tower/streambox stuff to majors. That’s not something the larger SF communities will bother with.
You can use a PC for more things than just playing games
Better performance
Ability to tweak for performance in multiple areas (framerate, MTU, input lag, et al)
Ability to multi-task and do other things
Modability
For locals and locally run tournies however, the console makes the superior choice due largely to the consistency and stripped back nature of the base equipment needed. At least, this was the conclusion I arrived at after trialling the PC back in the vanilla and Super SFIV era here in Sydney.
Further, given Sony’s involvement with SF5, I suspect that while the PC will make for a fine platform either way, the PS4 will likely be regarded as the default standard at tournaments - particularly those with formal Capcom and Sony affiliation such as Capcom Cup and it’s related qualifiers.
Also the fact that being sat directly in front of a monitor is an uncomfortable way to play anything - at least for me - particularly if you’ve got friends round (for PC gamers, friends are like the people on your Steam list but in real life).
I was playing Drunk Souls (again) the other week. The Windows version may run at twice the FPS, display at a higher resolution (down scaled from an even higher resolution), and allow loads of cool mods - but when you’re drunk with a bunch of mates the PS3 on a big telly in a room full of couches is the best format.
And anyone who’s ever run locals knows how awkward using a laptop can be when everyone wants to use their own stick…
I had originally planned to get both but crossplay at least means that’s not necessary, and that both versions will maintain parity. So they’ll both be the same amount of fun, and that’s the important thing.
I have my PC hooked into the same TV I use for my game consoles. I use a controller.
It’s the exact same experience only it looks and plays better.
**
ATTENTION PEOPLE OF THE WORLD: COMPUTERS WILL WORK WITH YOUR TV VIA HDMI JUST LIKE YOUR CONSOLES. THANK YOU!**
Also tournaments are always run with computer monitors anyhow so… yeah.
Most people already have a PC and dont want to buy other one, its that simple, also ps4 exclusives wont be on PC, which is other reason people will get it. Also other fighting games will be on xbox one or ps4. So you already have set ups for PS4, Xbox one, and the smash players have their set up also. You see how having this many set ups will get out of hand.
Form factors aside, the PS4 is the most standardized option for tournament organizers. There is much less of a chance for performance disparity and technical issues between stations and their settings on a console game. TO’s have enough crap to worry about already without having to troubleshoot settings to make play identical across the board. I’m a PC guy myself. PC gives me the most control over my own personal experience with the game, but I recognize that the PS4 is a better bet for tournaments. I’ll just make sure I have a PS4 fightstick for tournament play and casuals
Alright, alright that’s cute and all. Yes, PC is better for a home experience if your main goal is just to play at your house. Unfortunately what is said below here…
Solidifies which platform should and will be used at tournaments. If you’re going to be going to offline tournaments ready, make sure you have a PS4 (hopefully also PS3 eventually) compatible stick. You’re gonna need it. TOs aren’t going to run PCs for just one game when there are like 3 or 4 other games that require a PS4. Just not happening. Maybe in 2022/23 when the PS5, SF6 and MK11 and Guilty Gear Zrd are out and have complete parity between their PS5 and PC ports.
End-user PC specifications are summarised via a grading icon prior to beginning a match. As such you can opt to bail out of a match if this is a problem, or if you anticipate it to be one.
I expect this to carry over into SF5, as it will be especially important for smoothing out the cross-platform experience.
The same argument can apply to the plethora of dolts playing on consoles via wireless connections. Incidentally, connection method (i.e. an icon denoting an ethernet or wireless connection) for BOTH platforms I really hope makes it into SF5 also. A filter to ignore any and all wireless connected players would be fantastic.
