PS3 uses HID profiles, so basically any USB device you can plug in. Whether or not the button arrangement works is another story, and whether or not the device is X-Input only like a Xbox controller is also another story. I’ve plugged in PS2/Saturn USB adapters that were made years before PS3 existed for PC into the PS3 and it worked.
As long as the PS4 controller adheres to the standard that most HID controllers do, then I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. You may not have full functionality of it though, probably just basic stuff. And no analog face buttons, means no proper MGS gaming.
I wonder if this’ll set a precedent for future peripherals. that GGXrd TE 2 that Mark was teasing some time back looks to be the perfect thing if it were both PS4 and PS3 compatible.
I’ve been saying a while now, I don’t think Sony is going to lock down the PS4 considering the PS3 was mostly open, aside from locking out impostor controllers. As long as it plugs into USB, I’m 99% sure it’s going to work based on their recent history. So that most likely means PS360+ and other dual mod boards will probably be plug and play while in default, non-Xbox mode. I’d be fairly shocked if Sony dick moved and locked it down ala MS, and I am going to bet that future tournaments for next gen fighters will all be PS4 using our current sticks.
Even if the PS4 is HID compatible AND is detected as a controller on a PS3, who’s to say that the Share/Options buttons will map to Select/Start properly? Sadly, I think that it would be wishful thinking to say that the controllers will be cross-compatible across the board.
The usual console business model sacrifices console profits (in the form of either loss or near zero to zero profit) as a loss leader so that the profits can be recouped in software and accessories - both in the form of 1st party and licensed 3rd party sales.
If Sony breaks the mold, then good for them! They’ve already done a lot of great things thus far in preparation for Next Gen, but I won’t be counting on this specifically.
So its back to where we are about 5 years ago, before Toodles came up with the Cthulhu.
It will separate the men from the boys when it comes to stick mods. There too many people who think they are hot shit that can’t dual mod without a Kitty or a Cerberus.
And using a PS360+ isn’t Dual modding. Back to the old days where Pad Hacks where common.
And knowing our luck the DS 4 will not be common ground, So we have to hack every input or someone comes up with a kit that offers a common ground conversion, like the LEO PCB and the AXIS PCB.
uh, ps4 controllers can’t connect wirelessly to the PS3. i know, i have a ps3 and a ps4 controller. In Canada they already sell them at EBGames. it only works when you plug it in. The home button never works but everything else works fine, in SSF4 at least. I also tried Persona4Arena, that works too.
And the cable you need is different than the standard PS3 controller cable. I found one that works in my dad’s office. it’s Usb on one side and some small thing on the other side.
Anyways what i’m saying is PS4 controllers are PERFECT for PS3 tournaments because they can’t sync wirelessly.
So is it a Micro USB connection (like Smart Phones use) or a priority connector?
Also if PS4 Dual Shocks can’t Sync onto PS3 consoles that would be awesome for pad players. I would wait till official judgement from Evo personnel like Mr Wizard before I go celebrating yet.
More than Likely if they can’t wireless sync Mr Wizard would not have a issue, but his word is law on Evo and SRK.
Well, it hasn’t been confirmed for the DS4, but MS had already confirmed via One of their many “Inside XBox ONE” segments with Major Nelson that the Play n Charge cable (in this case, any standard Micro USB cable), unlike its XBox 360 counterpart, CAN be utilized to connect the XBO controller like a wired controller… So, if anyone wants to pad hack, they can just wire the controller with any micro USB cable going into the PCB’s connector.
I would imagine that the PS4 connector is maybe Micro USB as well, unlike the DS3, which is a Mini USB.
I meant DS4 on PS4, if Sony and MS lock out 3rd party controllers then dual modding is out using official PCB. That’s all. Also, Micro USB sucks. Mini USB I’ve found is much sturdier and secure. My OnLive controller that uses Micro USB feels loose and has sync issues over wire because I dropped it once while the cord was in. Unlike Mini USB, which I’ve dropped a few times with no consequences while the cord was still plugged into the DS3.
I don’t think it’s fair to judge anything based on the quality of anything related to OnLive. From using the micro USB cable from my LG phone, I haven’t had any issues with it. Feels pretty fine to me.
The OnLive controller is actually really high quality. It’s just the MicroUSB slot, it’s about the only thing that doesn’t feel sturdy. My phone’s MicroUSB slot feels ok, but then my phone isn’t nearly as heavy as my OnLive controller. Probably the major difference there. I still think MiniUSB is a more secure fit and over all feels more solid from the devices I’ve had with MiniUSB vs MicroUSB.
the problem with micro is that it is fragile… the connector itself doesnt have a lot to secure itself onto the host PCB (UNLESS the manufacturer adds some stuff to sturdy it up). I have replaced a few and it can be a pain. Mini is a little more stout and can be secured to the PCB a little better.
Funny you posted that just as I was wrapping up a dual mod with a cerberus! lol!
I agree though… we are so spoiled right now and its so easy to dual thanks to some really smart folks. Every time I cut a cerberus down I say a little thank you to phreak for coming up with such a great little board… love the damn thing.
I for one welcome our new overlords an look forward to doing the old school padhacks again until those smart folks figure out a solution… It was my first foray into this stuff and do miss it sometimes.
