PS4 controller works with PS3 while plugged in... hmmm

This is exactly what I figured. I’m probably going to end up desoldering the old MicroUSB off my OnLive PCB and solder on a Mini. If I can manage to get it to fit, that is…

Yeah

So we got to “step up our game” is all. There is no impossible hacks, only a lack of skill, knowledge and creativity.

Well, if these PCB are encrypted like X360, then it may take quite a while until someone hacks out the encryption keys. I suppose old school dual mods will work find though, but really I’m totally banking on PS4 being THE fighting game machine this gen. I don’t think anyone will really care about dual modding at the moment. If all the tournaments are using PS4 and everyone is using PS4 sticks, then it won’t matter anyway except the few Xbox only friends you may or may not have. All things considered about Kinect having to be connected to the machine to boot, I doubt any TO’s want to lug around 30 Xbones with 30 Kinects just to boot and then disconnect the Kinect so no one shouts “XBOX OFF!!”

Not that I’ll be playing on a PS4 anytime soon, I’m more than happy with my PC.

Thought I just had, if the PC version of future fighting games is as good a port as Skullgirls was I really see no reason to use a console at all. Think of all the time tournaments would save on load times. I personally can’t stand console anymore because shit loads forever.

More relevant to discussion is that nearly every controller that matters will just work.

We tried running tournaments on PC. Any time saved on loading is wasted on having to spend alot of time setting up whatever sticks you plug in.

MS already addressed and reversed their stance on that “Kinect required” functionality. The XBO will work without the Kinect, but some “important features” will not be available… So TO’s can keep their Kinects at home.

If you wouldn’t mind telling me more about that I’d love to hear it. Doesn’t everyone do a button check before matches anyhow?

Except we had to turn off the game, plug the controllers and then turn it back on before AE would recognize them.

A good gaming PC cost more than a gaming console.
A decent mid-tier gaming PC is about $900, Brand new the PS4 is $450.

*Monitor not included.

Now you have to factor in how many gaming stations your tournament needs.
You can’t run a full on tourney with only one console or PC.

There is also the prior setup as well. Any fool can plug some A/V cables into a TV
Not everyone can set up a PC, there also installing the game and set up before hand.
If you are working with Steam Titles, you need internet connectivity or set up the games for OFF LINE MODE
Consoles are pretty much ready to go out of the box.

Did some really quick evaluations on Friday when I picked up a couple of DS4’s. Some interesting bits… I didn’t do a teardown as someone already did that, but I’ll look more into it this week as far as possibly using it for pad hacks.

It’s hard to say how it reacts with the actual system, but if it’s similar to what it’s doing on PC I don’t think we’ll need pad hacking. Not that it really matters since no fighters are even coming out for it for a long while as far as I know.

Currently the DS4’s are tournament viable for PS3, but for PS4 it still sync’s up to that system on the initial plug in so we will likely have the same problems.

But I understood the PS4 Dual Shocks only works on PC and the PS3 via USB.

From looking at the teardown it seems as if all the buttons are digital except for L2 and R2 which are analog. Wondering if the buttons are common ground or common line.

Would be interesting to see if I could take out the battery and put a cut down 360 TE pcb in its place.

This is true, sadly. Anytime you run a game on PC, you have to quit the program and reload just so someone can use their own stick. If you are using tournament supplied sticks though, it would be much faster.

On the other hand, I saw someone mentioning putting games in offline mode. That’s as easy as going to Steam menu and putting it in offline mode, then just start your games. Nothing else is a big deal about it.

The main problem would come from whether or not the game requires a GFWL profile, which means in offline mode it won’t sync to an account and any settings you had for it would need to be redone, such as unlocked characters and the like. GFWL is a pain in the ass, it seems to sometimes let me play my profile offline and others not. I had that problem with Dark Souls. Non-GFWL games would be fine on Steam though.

GFWL is dying, steam is taking over, but it’s not feasible to run PC tournies because consoles are extremely under-valued, devs eat so much of the cost and hope to gain it all back with peripherals, licensing, software, and online subscriptions.

I don’t think the xbone will be the console of choice but the dudebros will buy them and KI might entice dudebros into the FGC (unlikely) but it’s still a toss up… Especially since the state of affairs with Capcom is so loosey goosey right now…

We can’t account for PS4 lag, xbone lag, where game devs will go in terms of producing titles…

I feel like arc systems will stick with Ps4 which will push the FGC in that direction (easier for tournies to only have ps4s) but if evo is sponsored by the shambling ghost of bill gate’s teen-aged hobby then who knows.

The fact that Markman is very openly claiming that Ps3/360 sticks won’t work on next gen could be a sign, or just preemptive saving their bacon so people can’t whine that they bought expensive peripherals that are useless over less than a month.

Of course consider that it benefits all parties (peripheral manufacturers and console developers) to choke out old devices, so I’m going into next gen 100% certain that I’ll need new sticks.
And if I’m proved wrong then poor me, I don’t need new sticks, what ever will I do, how ever will I live with such hard facts?

Right, that’s why it’s great for tournaments.

My impressions on the DS4 (in testing with PS3 and TEKKEN games)…

Tested the Dual Shock 4 (PS4 Controller) with TTT2 & TEKKEN Revolution…

PS4 DS4 d-pad works great for TEKKEN on PS3. Face buttons respond well with a springier feel vs DS3. It’s definitely different from the DS2/DS3 style d-pad and may take some getting used to depending on the person. I was able to do multiple EWGF combos, DCK cancel combos, and some of the tougher more restrictive diagonal requirement combos with no problem… Only con? Can’t access home button.

This would make the PS4 DS4 a great tournament controller considering it is mandatory wired/can’t be synced to the system + no home button.

By the way, this controller is available now at most retail stores that will be carrying the PS4. Get it now if you want to try.

The diagonal window where you hit both directions simultaneously is also smaller (it feels that way to me), so diagonals/missing diagonals should be less of an issue depending on how accurate your thumbs are.

I’m not ‘very openly’ claiming anything. I’m just saying from what I know. I’ve always been sharing what I know and what is available (that I can say).

Also, very rarely has there ever been a console that allowed you to use previous gen controllers on their next iteration (out of the gate). PS1 to PS2 has this and so does recent Nintendo consoles. But other than that, we’ve never had that luxury. From what I know and the way that Sony & Microsoft are integrating hardware experiences more and more, we’ll see less and less of the past.

So to reply to your statement. There is no bacon to be saved here. If people whine, it’s because they don’t understand or they can’t deal with the facts.

I’m sure you know this by now but people LOVE to complain

So how about a promo code please? One that works for gamesharkstore.ca since americans get MLG fightsticks for $99

grumble grumble

I’m really pumped about the DS4 being so useful though, from what I’ve heard it’s hands down the best gamepad ever, I look forward to playing PC games and PS4 games alike with this (ps3 too!)

So anyone have any luck with a bluetooth dongle?

Aside from Guilty Gear Xrd, PS4 is also getting Injustice and DiveKick.

EDIT:
Also, the other great thing about the DS4? With a bit of help, [IT WORKS ON 360](DualShock 4 can be made to work on an X360
