I just wanted to find out what everyone thinks about the likelihood of the PS360+ having a simple firmware or software update to solve the incompatibility it MAY have with the PS4 and XBONE.
I don’t know if it’ll be easy (as I don’t know what sort of security structure/hardware limitation the new consoles may have), but I think that it is a distinct possibility. Seeing as firmware can ultimately emulate any security measures that have been taken, it should be (theoretically) as simple as coding it to work.
So, Tech Talk, what do you think? Let’s Talk Tech…
(Please, don’t shoot me for the pun… straps on ballistic vest)
May take up to two years.
It took a while for the MC Cthulu to add Saturn and Dreamcast compatibility but it happened because the designer of that PCB was very clever and knew what he was doing…
Not saying the PS360+ guys aren’t clever, either, but a firmware upgrade is not as simple as you think and the new systems haven’t even been released!
Can you be patient???
FYI, the PS360+ will NOT work with the XB-One as is… Different security chip than the 360.
There’s fair chance the PS4 will have some kind of security that locks out some controllers but we don’t know that for sure beyond Sony saying DS3’s won’t work because of the revised BlueTooth on the PS4.
This topic has been talked to death as is… Don’t know why people can’t figure out Third Party PCB’s won’t be showing up for at least months after the new systems are actually on market.
I’ve previously stated that I understand the amount of time and talent it takes for this process. My point here is the thought that it may be plausible on already existing hardware.
Also, If you research the PS360+, you’ll find that the technology behind it’s ability to conform to almost any system is quite ingenious (that being it’s firmware architecture). So, as long as there isn’t some insanely complex security measures for the new generation of controllers, it should be possible.
I probably should have been more clear. I am debating it’s possibility, not it’s time frame. It could take 6 months, it could take 6 years, it matters not.
You can speculate all you want without any real information to go on.
You can speculate all you want on how an internal conbustion engine works or how the human body functions, but without the theory of why it works you will sound like a dumbass whose grasping at ideas that come out of thin air.
We do not know if Sony is keeping 3rd party controllers using generic HID class USB driver or not.
We really got lucky with the PS3. And even if Sony was nice and stay with generic plug-n-play drivers, we do not know if the current PCBs are up to snuff. It could be like trying to control Skyrim with a NES pad.
One thing for certain all the good hackers and modders could all fall back to the glory days of Pad-hacking by sacrificing 1st part system controllers for their delicious PCBs.
And scrubs stop trying to think they are hot shit and stop modding.
If that is what you think, that’s fine. I am a scholar by profession so this is what I’m paid for; Speculation and theory (Or as you call it “grasping ideas that come out of thin air”). It’s my passion and it permeates everything that I do. Including my monetized hobbies (which include PCB repairs for a local computer repair store.)
Most communities that I come across receive this kind of thing much better than this. I find the venom you are spitting deplorable and disappointing. A friend of mine referred me here under the pretext that this community was friendly, intelligent and open. Not rude, insulting, and foul-mouthed. I suppose I could even walk away angry, leave SRK and be done with it, however I have met enough other wonderful people here in Tech Talk (and have also encountered several very friendly and well written posts by you) to surmise that you must be having a bad day or perhaps this subject has you irked. No harm done, sorry if I’ve aggravated you. Perhaps there is another subject you are more open to debating? The composition of thermal compounds, best practices in HTML5 structuring, Seimitsu vs. Sanwa from a standpoint of materials used, Ham and Cheese vs. P B & J from a standpoint of endorphin release? Whatever the subject, I’m sure I can at the very least; keep up.
Ok I’ll bite… @deBoru, what in the PS360+ have you specifically found that leads you to have hope that it is scaleable to next gen? (that is a genuine question that I’ll gladly wear the title scrub and sit in the small desk in the front of the class cause I really do wanna know) I mean I would love to hear it can do it but when it was made, it was made for current gen then incorporating legacy not the other way around. In essence, for us to think that it can go forward to next gen seems very unlikely. But if it worked we would all be cutting backflips.
@deBoru, we understand that you would like to create theories and form debates on a very interesting topic such as this, but this has been beaten with a club time after time and most of us have come to a conclusion that we MUST WAIT and see what community is about to face from Sony (cuz MS is public enemy #1 to the FGC right now). Besides, most of us won’t be heading to ps4 till a full year or two when another hit fighter is announced (tekken, sf, marvel, kof, etc) and only then the big wigs will release a stick or a pcb can be out just in time IF they decide to make an update for the current PS360+ or just make a new dedicated one for next gen.
Essentially, unless they go for something absurd, the PS360+ should work. Of course, the 360 was absurd (using military-grade encryption hardware), so anything is possible. The PS360+ has a fairly powerful MCU for what it has to do, so it’s in the realm of possibility.
This is why I love message boards. This has made my boring mundane day a million times more exciting.
@Sonic Immora
Yes, I’ve noticed that everyone has been headbutting the issue since Day 0 of E3. I was just trying to stir up a debate on current tech that may be a solution before a solution is even needed. However, I hadn’t realized that people were so frustrated over it.
I agree, I know about the PS360+‘s MCU, but I didn’t know all that about the 360 controllers (well… I knew it was strict but not “Millitary-grade”). That’s freakin’ amazing.
Also, all of this comes with a grain of salt or five billion. We really don’t know enough. Past trends suggest it can be done, but they’ve changed before.
The issue will be whether or not the security is hardware or software. What made the 360 tough to crack was that it was hardware based encryption. If microsoft decides to use a new hardware based encryption that is not back compatible with 360 controllers it really doesn’t matter what processor is on the PS360, it won’t handle the XBOne.
The real question is what will happen with the PS4. So many controllers like the Cerberus were possible because everythign except the 360 could “easily” be put onto a board. If the PS4 and the 360 both have security measures to prevent 3rd party controllers it’s going to be VERY tough to have dual mod controllers for a bit.
I think the PS360 is a great controller, but look at the number of components on the Paewang board, and it gets the job done also…
Most folks here could care less about the XBOne anyway. PS4 compatibility is what most folks should be looking into because that’s the console most tournaments are likely to run since it doesn’t have any draconian online requirements.
I can only speculate based on what we know so far based on reports, combined with some inference keeping historical data in mind. Just using that as a basis for speculation it would seem that it is unlikely or impossible for XB1 to be supported via FW upgrade. PS4 compatibility seems like it wouldn’t take much work. In fact, the stick might just work without even needing a FW upgrade.
I agree XBone screwed themselves into a corner and as a Sony t-shirt wearer, I couldn’t be happier. As long as everyone is playing PS4 and if they are as accommodating as they were last time with peripherals then nothing will essentially need to be changed. I just hate that Killer Instinct is an exclusive title.
