Proposing a soft ban on giants

Oh…you’re Saetan…

Also, have you ever even played against Kevin? If he vars from 3/4 screen he can loop you. You’ve seen maybe 5 - 10 vids of the guy…I’m sure that he’s played a few more games than that.

As for the whole Akuma thing, I was pointing out how the Akuma vs Hawk/Geif is rather lopsided and down right futile (for the Gief/Hawk player) much like PTX vs many characters in this game.

Just ignore that guy.

Seriously though, unlike some people, I really want to keep playing, and at this point maybe a giants ban will make people think that the game is better and want to play more, and that’s the only thing that I want to be looking out for. So basically, I’m going to stop arguing against the ban, and if it does happen, I hope it helps.

I say giants legal. We’ve established that they aren’t broken. It’s a different match-up, and you have to play different against them. They have a lot of good match-ups, but they also have bad match-ups, just like any other character.

Forget it, our mouthpiece just told us to mess with rules and play how we want. Fine by me, I have no problem playing for recreation until MvC3 comes out.

Well, it doesn’t make some things people say any more silly. Like “A boring and repetitive matchup forces a character ban” or “The Giants single-handedly destroyed TvC.” We all know that TvC wasn’t going to be that big so it doesn’t really matter anymore, but I just thought to myself that we could enjoy ourselves quietly and with respect until the Versus title that everyone has been waiting for comes out. Instead, we have players making dumb ban requests eerily similar to Smash stall-banning which makes the community look like a bunch of morons. Excellent way to go. After this is over in April I’ll just pretend nothing ever happened.

I’m with Keits on this one. He didn’t break any rules and play to win. It is your job to protect yourself. Blaming keits for what he did is like bitching about tick throw is an unfair tactic.

The phone trick is nothing but like faking a fireball to make you jump. Do you know what poker players would do to make you believe what they wanted you to believe?

If you don’t know more than one character, don’t know the match up against the entire cast, you better ask for double blind char select otherwise there is a likely chance that your opponent is a counter picker and take advantage of you.

I have seen many ssf4 players fall into victims of this at EVO.

It was still a dickish move of Keits to do. Yea Keits just plays to win which is fine but that is why he could not handle Wong haha.

im going to be completely honest…he’s right(good shit keits). in Street Fighter i’ve always been a trash talker. and found it entertaining. it makes the game fun for me. but ofcourse i learned. nobody likes a trash talker. that’s why i calmed it down. i only trash talk during friendlies.

so TvC is now the same status as Jojo and Cybots? sounds neato…

this is a bad thread to be bumping.

Why…are you guys arguing about this? Just play the game and stop arguing about it. Seriously. There aren’t any arguments like this on Capcom Unity.

This isnt Capcom unity man. People will argue when they have conflicting points of view. Banning a giants is silly, im not gonna get into details because i will only be repeating what was said in prior post.

Also from the tournaments that I have been to I dont even see that many giant players for there to even warrant a ban.

The people that actually want to ban giants are the ones who hate fighting them or actually have to pick a counterpick team (instead of use his/her normal team) to fight. It is also more relevant if you actually ever come across a more-than-competent giant player.

Example: EVO 2010: Pool 1 had GCYoshi13 [PTX], Pool 2 had Skisonic [Lightan] and psychochronic [PTX], Pool 3 had Bad Fish [PTX] and ll.nd [PTX]. I was in pool 1 and had to face GCYoshi13 in my loser’s bracket gauntlet and picked the Tekkamen. My only advantages were that I had experience learning the PTX matchup by fighting ll.nd’s PTX in both CGoH and UAS and that I knew a week beforehand that GCYoshi only used PTX. GCYoshi put up the best fight ever against the best giant slaying team in the game, actually beating me the first game, then I took the following two games. Each round I recall him knocking out at least one of my characters.

To say that you won’t fight a giant is like saying that you’re ignoring a character matchup. Still, I will go with learning the character matchup (just like fighting any other character) to stand a chance.

Its really sad when we allow something as trivial as giants tear a community apart. Its getting to be Smash bad. At least this game’s dead in 8 months.

How is it “tearing the community apart,” exactly?

There are people for it, and against it, and we talk about it, but those who are serious about the game show up and play one way or another. Kurasa, who was against the giants being in, showed up at evo, played with giants allowed, and just generally hung out with people who want giants to be in. Fuckin’ keits and marn teamed up in the team tourney. Saying it’s tearing anything apart is just melodramatic. We’re just talking.

I just think it’s a bit much to have such a dispute over a video game. I’ve played Yoshi and he beats me down, even if I pick the Tekkamen. Do i cry about it? No. It’s a game and he has a lot of skill. So I’m not really on either side. I don’t particular like the giants, but i don’t care either way. This game is too balanced to complain.

It’s tearing this community apart because yourmother had to say something. Argument over. =P

I was happy when Phampy and GCYoshi took down Marn and Keits in that team tourney. That was awesome.

Being serious, this is an important (though argue intensive) discussion about characters in the game. It’s strange from a general standpoint at how much attention is drawn to Giants on the SRK general board, but its within reason. If you boil it all down to the core, Giants throw something different into the game. What comes after is the discussion what that ‘something different’ does to a game like TvC, hence threads like this. Just remember, this is the Internet.

My opinion is this: Do you use the same tactics fighting against a person against a tank? From my perspective, Giants follow that general idea. It’s already ridiculous enough that I choose to fight against a Giant with a broom. Or with a guy that fights with a toy. Yet I live with it and plot to take down a Giant in a serious match with those characters.

The people from the SoCal community are split into their own opinions. Some don’t like Giants (Tron, Rotan, etc.) others are neutral/for (Flush, me, etc.) but we still show up and play together when we can. Phampy is working on using Lightan just to mess with the other people in SoCal. He might even show up on the WNF stream with him one day, haha.

We play just to play, make jokes, argue stupidly, and throw trash talk at each other. Then we do it again the next time we see each other. Giant or no Giant arguments, we get together to play. What would tear the community apart is people pulling off cheap tricks like unplugging a controller in the middle of the match, or creating ‘accidents’ in a match…wait, I should write that down.

While the TvC community as a whole will take a huge hit after MvC3 arrives, I’ve noticed more people taking notice of TvC itself over in SoCal. There is a tourney I mentioned in October, and another tourney (UTGL) in November featuring the game as one of the major events alongside SSF4. Thanks to the efforts of people like the SoCal crew, this is the result of that. As long as people play because they enjoy it, it won’t die.

The irony/saving grace for the game is its on the Wii. It has a better chance of surviving since a few people are stuck with Wiis, and some might migrate over from Brawl. Hopefully.

If Melty Blood survived, TvC can pull that off too. At least long enough so we get a TvC2, right? ^^;

Oh, and this is to GCYoshi. I aim to destroy your PTX with my Roll. It’ll be difficult, but I’m gonna do what I can with my newfound ‘strategies’ to make it happen when I meet you again.

I’m sure you heard how Keits pulled a fast one on somebody (can’t remember who) and pretended to do something on his phone while his opponent picked characters and he counterpicked with a giant. Why don’t they just have you submit (on a piece of paper i guess) the character(s) you are choosing before each match, so something like this doesn’t happen. … That helps a litttle bit. Maybe.

They do, its called blind picking.

Not in any of the tourneys I’ve seen.

As far as I’ve known, no one requests a blind pick in a TvC tourney. It isn’t something seriously discussed upon among the SoCal crew.

Keits did pull that, but it was within the agreed upon rules. As soon as you signed up for the tourney you agreed to the Rules and Regulations stated. Nothing dictated that counter-picking was illegal. Nothing was listed that you can’t pull tricks beyond playing the game (as long as it doesn’t break the Rules) to get ahead. No matter which way you cut it, in a serious competition (especially something like EVO) you aim and exploit as many openings the opponent has in order to increase the odds of winning. Whether its through mental pressure, character choice, or tactics, everything is fair game. Its not a pleasant thing to face, but its a general truth.
