Proposal- An elite forum section

I think you guys would be really underwhelmed if you found out what was in a lot of top players’ minds while playing.

I think you’d be even less enthused about this idea if you ever saw some of them write anything.

Anybody who would like the mystique of being a STREET FIGHTER EXPERT to be completely destroyed can just spend five minutes watching DSP videos.

True enough. I really don’t think that “top level play” is something that you can put into text on a forum. It’s a thought process that really isn’t quantifiable in words. That being said, the basic theories behind matchups and such CAN be quantified and while reading Latif’s writeup on the Fei matchup wouldn’t get one to Top 8 at EVO next year it would be a good starting point to start developing your own ideas and approaches to a match.

That’s my two cents.

It’s not that, it’s more that many of the American top players play largely on feel, and it’s REALLY hard to talk about that.

If you were to read Damdai talk about ST, I’m sure it would be amazing (I don’t check ST forums… he seems like the kind of guy that would have written a lot). He breaks shit down to a science, and plays in a way that is very quantifiable. If you were to read marn talk about something, it probably wouldn’t be as good of a read. That’s no knock against marn… he just isn’t one of those guys that breaks shit down, and knows exactly what he should do. He plays off the opponent, for the most part.

Then there’s the fact that many of them just can’t write for shit, which is an entirely different issue.

^-- That’s pretty much the exact experience Magnetro had when he tried this type of project. Good players who can explain non-physically how they do what they do and how to improve are rare.

You should really watch Super Turbo Saturdays at some point, your point about Damdai is very spot on.

I have watched a couple of episodes. It’s really good stuff.

sounds like we have one hell of a professional troll posting up in here.

I still don’t get how/why any top players should post in the section.

"Hey guys, we made this area for you!"
Uh… thanks?

What’s the attraction?

With every forum and every character specific forum having a General Discussion/Social thread, there is no reason that kind of stuff should be spilling into other threads risking derailment, especially the more informative ones.

Report the nonsense more.

As I’ve said before, I really enjoy writing and am decent enough at it to do some writeups if there was demand for such a thing. Don’t know if people would be interested in hearing my thoughts about stuff since I “lack credentials” so to speak, but whatever. Trolls gonna troll, ect. I just wanna help out, I may be an 09er but I love this place and wanna see it become as great a resource for competitive players as I know it can be.

Well, what I would say is that in these two threads, if nothing else, it’s become more than clear that there is indeed a demand for this stuff, so don’t hesitate to start contributing.

Interesting that you bring this up, because I was watching Cross Counter Asia awhile back and the way Zhi and Xian brokedown Xian’s win against Mago was simply something else. Made me and a friend wonder if most top players on this side of the planet (Asia) viewed the game differently from those in the US.

troll harder.

I think it’s half that and a lot of them are just really bad with words. Take Justin Wong, you’ve got to pull the hoof out of his mouth half the time to really get what he’s talking about half the time. He talks with hyperbole to such a degree that it can become difficult to take him seriously. There’s not a large percent of our top players that can really put into words what goes in their heads beyond the level of Chris Hu + high school level english. It’s rare you’ll see someone like Seth Killian, Sirlin, or Mike Z who isn’t just a great player, but also a great auditator.

There’s also the half you’re talking about. A lot of what Americans do is learned and through feel, so they don’t really understand how they do what they do persay. Mike Z is probably one of the few top gamers I trust to make a fighting game. God forbid someone ever hire Marn to design their game.

Exactly this… I mean what even Qualifies you as a top player nowadays? Theres the Newbie Saikyo Dojo for a reason, we were all scrubs at one point and a Higher level player decided to in one way or another Help us level up. Now Imagine this… 2 Arcades Arcade A and Arcade B both have 20 people, Arcade A has 1 Really good player and 19 scrubs Arcade B has 20 Scrubs… which one gets better?

Sadly he doesn’t do much but argue with people in the ST forums, or at least that’s how it was, he doesn’t post much there anymore.

Also his online persona can come off somewhat uhhh, not like he seems to be in person.

If they are interested than the current separation method has shown little positive effect But maybe my mindset is keeping me from seeing.

anyone who’s good knows how frustrating it can be dealing with this website. Its incredibly hard to get any kind of decent information going on here because of how good threads play out. Say you get 3 good players to start posting in a thread and they’re having a good conversation. Eventually, some dumbass scrubs start entering the coversation with bad info, the wrong tools, no philosophy but thinks he’s right even though he’s been playing for 2 weeks. Then when you tell him he’s wrong or he should stop posting its elitism.

whenever I try to talk about the net play state here on srk, I get countless scrubs telling me sf4 is the best game online, who the fuck are you and if I think sf4 sucks online, I’m the scrub. I can link them to several interviews about the net code from other players, explain the differences between input delay and roll back and it never works. Since there are so few people that understand the net play stuff and they don’t post, I’m always overwhelmed by uninformed dumb fucks.

Its pretty aggravating dealing with that crap when you’re trying to help out the community or even progressing a character forward by talking to better players about the pro\cons of the character.

however, having god like mvc2 players on my AIM like fanatiq, clockw0rk, mixup, j360, it was very very very easy talking about mvc2. I didn’t have to worry about random scrubs derailing the thread and discussion could actually happen without the backlash of idiots who have nothing to offer.

I don’t know if an elite forum is what we need but I would like to see intelligent discussion become a factor again instead of talking about what goes good with the guile theme for the millionth time.

So lets start doing this.

Nicely explain why he (and in the rare event) she is wrong.
Try this 2 more times.
If this does not work
ignore the scrub within the conversation (ESPECIALLY the notorious ones)
if he/rarely a she continues, report the person for spreading misinformation.
