Proposal- An elite forum section

Tournament results are not too arbitrary, IMO. Basing invites on tournament results is not arbitrary. Where you set the bar is open to some interpretation naturally; I’m definitely not the best person to do so. The tricky people are not the normal top placers, but the people who are good but don’t make huge splashes nationally or internationally. I’m quoting Hav on this as–even though he isn’t a national top 8 finisher–he pretty much always posts something worth reading.

Seriously, just invite consistent tournament placers and some people they think “get it.” It doesn’t matter if the content isn’t written professionally. It would really benefit the community if average, random SRK lurkers could sit in on discussion from high end players. The overwhelming majority of discussion that goes on right now simply doesn’t benefit anybody.

I honestly don’t think this is realistic. Since starting to mod in the newbie dojo, I went from spending most of my time on SRK answering questions to spending most of my time locking threads and dealing with trolls. Have you read the tier threads in either the AE or Marvel section lately? They are mostly garbage. You would need like a dozen people each watching just those two threads like a hawk to keep the nonsense in check.

Speaking of which, If you want people complaining about arbitrary, you’ll get a lot more complaints if you get the mods to switch to nazi mode in the discussion sections than you would with an invite only, read only section. People tend to complain more when they are getting infracted constantly.

Again, I don’t mean you any disrespect. I think you and the guys do an awesome job in tech talk. I just think some of the other boards are a different beast entirely.

I consider every mod on this site a minor god for dealing with everything in the forums and not going postal.

We could use a mod at the ST and HDR sections, to be honest. Just for organizing stuff.

Now on topic, I am yet to hear a good reason why a section with limited permission to post would help. As for talking to other good players, they do it the right way: at tournaments and gatherings.

yeah there is no incentive on buying premium now, wich is why i have not renewed mine since the last year

I think the benefit of having a central forum of written information where people not in an earshot of top players from tournaments can all benefit from info has clear advantages over simple word of mouth. I also concede that perhaps civilization at large is crazy for creating multiple writing systems with which to record the spoken word.

Do you want a more concrete example? I live halfway around the world from most of you. Generally speaking, I have no means of attending US tournaments. I can–and often do–hit nationwide tourneys here, but I don’t have the benefit of hearing what top US players are thinking.

A lot of domestic players also fit into this. Not everyone can make every major. Not everyone can make every local. Not everyone is next to every good player at every major and local when they say something smart.

Do I really need to go on?

As I said, the separation does little for the new player who happens to not be a scrub. You know, the type that actually gets it and is willing to learn. They still get forced to wade through shit and back.

Which is why over the past page, the discussion has shifted from simply separating and/or nazi mode, to figuring out some way to better encourage and reward people for making actual good posts.

ITT: Old heads still mad for no reason.

On topic: If you don’t like the idea of anyone, regardless of “E-status”, posting anything they want, you may want to NOT go to a forum? Seriously what information do you so desperately seek but cannot find within the forums?

“*The legit new members who wanted to learn toughed it out, and now are contributing members and the others?”
*

That’s the way it SHOULD be, however 09’ers still get hate to this day. You’ve got people bragging about how long they’ve been posting here and how many posts they have, but in reality…why does anyone give a shit? I joined this site in feb. 09, lurked for a year and a half, posted little for 6 months, and just recently tried to stir discussions and contribute but I obviously haven’t been typing words for enough years for what I say to have any meaning right? (If you like, go look at my posts, and try to tell me)

If you don’t like what someone posted, get the fuck over it because you don’t have to read it. Stop circle-jerking each other over the internet because you think you’re smarter/better/older/stronger/cooler than other people who post (or try to).

In conclusion I have a counter-proposal to those dissatisfied with SRK: Get the fuck over yourselves.
( and honestly, if you use SRK to find information you have no problems finding it if you have a brain.)

Somebody had to.

I guess I can’t really relate to you here. I’d would gladly read through pages of content from top 64 evo placers than most of the crap we have in the SF4/Marvel section right now. I don’t really see how that sort of thing could be considered wading through shit and back. There seems to be a very clear benefit in the signal to noise ratio while also actually encouraging good players to start posting here again.

It seems win-win to me.

For example, if the two of us were appointed to mod the SF4 section tomorrow and we modded/banned/edited our little hearts out, there would hardly be an influx of top players starting to post. The powers that be sending out invites and fix the reasons why they didn’t want to post to begin with would go a lot farther.

It’s not about status or anything like that, though. It’s about trying to make SRK better for everybody, old and new alike. At least for me it is.

Laughed my ass off. Thanks.

I’ve never seen this ever. Mainly because nobody gives a damn.

What I do see is endless complaining from people who claim to be on the receiving end of such remarks.

people are just using their join date as a scapegoat to avoid having to man up and admit the fact that they made a shitty thread (shitty threads are usually where I see this complaining about srk elitism). imo.

Anyway, I like this idea. If Keits can get paid to lurk the internet for things to put on the front page, I think SRK could certainly afford to cover entry/venue fees at Evo or add some other incentive for top players who contribute…

Wait…what? If anything people use others join dates to invalidate their opinions or to cut them down.

the funny thing is that usually the newer members post the most retarded things or made the most useless threads :coffee:

And the older members sit back with the “back in my day” complex.

I’d rather see a newbie make a retarded thread with an honest question (even if It has been answered a million god damn times), get trolled/flamed and eventually redirected to another thread and that thread become closed fairly quickly. (This happens all the time, we’ve all seen it.) Opposed to what’s happening in this very thread. Because honestly, let’s not talk about fighting games its much more productive to talk about how OTHER PEOPLE talk about fighting games.

Yeah, like this thread and the one bitching about comments on the front page. Oh, wait.

the key term is usually :wgrin:

Both threads are great IMO :sunglasses:

What I find funny is that a good portion of them are in the mid 20s, which means their day was like 8 years ago. Hence, the 3S and MvC2 fetishism. The way they beg for more moderation leads me to believe that none of them ever posted to alt.games.sf2 or any video game newsgroup in the '90s. In fact, I don’t think their delicate sensibilities could handle Usenet, so they’re lucky that they were born too late to experience it. God forbid they have to coexist with people they might not like or agree with 100% of the time.

i am down for this “elite” section. the hard part would be to convince top players that it’s even worth their time to share their thoughts. reading debates between top players would be amazing.

I’ve given it some thought, and I’ve come up with some possible qualifications for the “elite” forum:

  1. Active member for at least 2 years
  2. Receive three “recommendations” from already qualified “Elite” members.
  3. An “evaluation” write up. Allow me to explain. A “prospect” (I’m really hating these terms but I don’t know what to use) is required to write a detailed, thorough article pertaining to the FGC. Whether this be matchup breakdowns, a summary of some tournament experiences, issues with the FGC as a whole (Payout structure for winners and such). This write up would be submitted to the “Elite” board for evaluation, and if it is determined you know what you’re talking abou via a vote, you get in.

Just some preliminary ideas I had. Feel free to critique/tear these apart.
