Proposal- An elite forum section

Nah the rep system was stupid because people were stupid and the last thing you want to do is to give power to stupid people.
I remember getting negged for reasons such as “you like blazblue” etc.

In that aspect the “like” system is better because when you think something is wrong, you have to explain yourself, which rewards people with valid arguments and screws up the stupid people with stupid arguments. (of course assuming the majority aren’t retards themselves which is a totally different problem)

That why I mentioned “something similar to the old rep system.” Rep did have that major flaw.

“Likes” are a step in the right direction, however I feel it isn’t enough (it needs to be more visible for one). IMO contrib points need to return (I miss my star).

Guys. I miss rep and the galaga shields even more now. =(

Bring back pre-09 SRK!

Also, yes, it is near impossible to find useful information or discussion on the forums. Considering how many people are on the forums on a daily basis. It’s actually kind of sad. But hey, what are you going to do? The more people that come onto the forums, the higher chance of having more scrubs running around on the forums. The difference is, a few years back, SRK scared the flying shit off new members (especially in 09). They were seriously trolled to no end. What happened? The legit new members who wanted to learn toughed it out, and now are contributing members and the others? Well, they shook their fist, called everyone else scrubs and left.

The culture of SRK changed and that’s why where we are now. It’s not necessarily about making better information available and exclusive because new scrubs are always going to ruin shit somehow. It has to start from the bottom up. You can’t just put a fresh-coat of paint on something and disregard what’s underneath.

That’s the thing. We need to find a way to encourage people like these.

For every decent '09 who actually toughed it out (like for example, me) you have a bunch of actual decent guy who get turned off from the site. I personally know a couple of good, non-scrubby players from Unity who couldn’t stand it here.

In other words, we need more of this (which apparently, kineda is putting on the front page once edited) and less of this.

Preferring Unity to SRK…
8 years running, this was the best video game forum that I’ve ever been to…
And now look at it.

Actually, there was a time when Unity was pretty decent, when you could still see guys like UltraDavid make the occasional post. Now, it only serves as a reminder of what this place could end up being if we don’t change (at least the Unity SSFIV forums, I’ve tried my best to keep the MvC3 and soon SFxT forums decent, somewhat).

There was a time when SRK was decent too…

More like a time when the fighting community was decent. The problem now is that the new blood hasn’t been steered in the correct direction.

What needs to be done is good old “carrot and stick.” The problem was we took away the “stick,” but at the same time, didn’t give a “carrot” to encourage folks towards the right direction.

If you’re a decent player and you want to get better. SRK is supposed to be the go-to place, even if you aren’t treated nicely. But, the thing is, if SRK was actually good for information, YOU DON’T EVEN NEED TO POST. You just read and learn, no hassle and no drama. It shouldn’t be an issue whether or not you can stand SRK. I can’t stand SRK now, because it’s not doing what it is supposed to do.

Plus, if you can’t stand a little heat from experienced members on an internet forum, how does that translate into a real tournament where you meet these same people?

Dafux?

And I miss my Galaga shields… I had like 12k posts…
EDIT:
http://shoryuken.com/forum/index.php?members/mixah.3305/
14,627 from this account…
and I don’t know how many from my abandoned account that I made in 2k3

Hadoken King.

Many times, I can’t weed through the bullshit to get to the strategies, and I’m a long-time SRK vet…

lol wtf omg

Punishment vs reward analogy. With how things are now, we took out the punishment (the “stick” so to speak) without upping the reward to encourage people to actually make useful posts (the “carrot”).

I understood that… but what punishment are you talking about?

You’ve got me there. The closest we got to a “stick” was being told off and trolled by the older players.

My dude…
You are one of the most random fucking people I’ve ever come across on these parts.
Good shit! hahahaha

the question you need to ask yourself is why would top players want to come and post here, when everything they say is going to fly over the heads of a bunch of yes men

its like if youve ever had a really awful co-worker who you need to tell things to 15 times because you can see their eyes glaze over as you tell them whats up

most good players stick to regional threads and very specific areas because srk as a whole is full of low teir warriors who have no idea what they’re taking about and spout scrubby anecdotal misinformation as if it’s fact. its absolutely painful to read the 95% of this forum that pertains to games/strategy because posters are more concerned about not straying from the “too cool to play to win” attitude that the hivemind encourages than actually being good at the games they post all day on srk about

since you guys like analogies, i’ll use this: essentially the problem is that the OP wants a patriots forum where tom brady gives insight on last sundays game. srk is more like patsfans.com where the vast vast majority of users are fanboys who have never played competitive football in their lives giving advice. why would a pro(or anyone who knows what they’re talking about) bother to post there? Its going to get swallowed up into a sea of idiocy.

the problem is not that pro players dont provide enough content, its that the culture around here is counter-productive to them even coming here in the first place

the problem with the rep system was that was only avaible for premiums and only them could see who repped them, add to that that we used to circle jerk plus repping each other while neg bombing trolls, idiots, and people that we dont liked

that way the rep system was basically a troll mechanic (wich i miss tbh:( )
there are other sites were the rep system works fine (hongfire for example)

I miss the arcade… and neg rep prevented you from using it.

That troll mechanic worked though. lol. =)

I liked seeing all that green and red + the funny quotes that came with it. It was a good reason to get premium (with big avatars and no ads). Now? Not so much.

I am in favor of having new people to the site being made to lurk for a month or two.

I have always lurked every forum I’ve joined due to shyness, and I strongly believe that if I had not done that and jumped right in, I’d be the exact type 09er / Unitytard that SRK complains about.

I know that my personal experience is kind of specific, but the hopeful part of me believes that forced lurk would work, and would cut down on the crap that gets posted.
