I think if you want SRK to be better, you just have to push through the stupidity.
I point to Abel SF4 forums as an example. Just like every other forum, there were idiots in there, but it was self-moderated, for the most part. If you came in talking some dumb shit, you’d get corrected. It was obvious who were strong posters in there, and their words held some weight.
It’s no coincidence that you could find posts from Juicebox, Combofiend, Ryder, Strider, and other strong Abel players in that forum. It’s because no nonsense was really accepted, the level of the conversation was almost always at a high enough level to intimidate dumb posters, even without having to be hostile. This created an environment that was palpable from top to bottom, so even if it wasn’t a nationally recognized player posting, more than likely, whomever was posting, was posting good stuff.
You’ve just gotta make it uncomfortable for the dumb shit, and the dumb shit will go away.
This is pretty on spot. I can not provide the links at the moment, but this has happened many times since I started lurking this forum. But I have to admit the ones with the edge on knowledge did kind of troll back on the new player, before someone could just explain why he was wrong. For now, I recall Watson explaining to someone why Ken could not consistently beat a good Ryu player in Hyper Fighting.
Yeah no one seems to want to answer this question. Why would J Wong and Co have any interest in posting in such a forum? Why would they want to share their tech with other top players, let alone the rest of the internet?
This is a very important point. VFDC can be like this, and so have a few other forums I’ve posted/lurked on. They self-moderate more or less and take the idiots in stride (or subtly ridicule them until they shut up).
SRK needs a probationary period for new members, say 3 months or 500 posts, during which if they make stupid threads or post unacceptable things, mods or people get to let them know what is and is not acceptable behavior. There could be a “probationary member” button, much like the ‘like’ or ‘report’ button, in which people could respond with small 100 space comments, just to let them know that this is not acceptable behavior. If people were afraid of what others would post in there, then you could list a panel of pre-defined comments like “trolling” or “racism”, or “disrespecting others.” So a person could look at what they posted and much like the “like” and “infraction” panels that get put up on a post, there would also be a panel saying for instance “95 people found this disrespectful, 5320 people found this to be wrong, etc…” It doesn’t have to be visable by the public either, so it wouldn’t have the stigma of the neg rep system, but at the same time, it would give a statistic for the person to read so that maybe it would get across to them that “maybe it IS me … and I should stop being a douche”
I’ve had an account at VFDC for 8 years. Even at its most active the stupid shit is kept more or less under control relative to this site. There are also small forums with fuckstupid userbases. The reality of the situation is that SRK has a lot of bad posters spewing garbage that no one cares about. Your post is a p good reminder of this. Have a nice day.
And I’ve had one for 4. But that’s irrelevant. The point is that Street Fighter is more popular than it’s ever been in the last 10 years. And the internet and social media are bigger than ever. We’re kinda in new territory here. I don’t think using other (less popular) forums as examples is the best comparison.
I understood what you were saying, and I disagree. VF being dead is also only ever-so-slightly relevant. I mentioned VFDC specifically because it’s a fighting game site where strong players could go in-depth without being trolled or accused of sitting on info/techs or getting drown out in all the noise. That aside, I did say that I’ve seen other sites self-police pretty well, which you seemed to ignore at your own convenience.
SRK’s gameplay discussion sections pretty much just deal with facts and theory fighter when you ignore the rest of the crap, right? This is a good place to start, because it’s concrete information! Even if a poster doesn’t agree with another’s theory-craft then there’s no shortage of match vids of high level play that a player can cite to demonstrate why they’re right (or, hell, their own tourney results and match analysis if we’re really lucky). If the discussion moves out of using evidence (into speculation, namecalling etc. lol) to discuss these things in particular then it probably isn’t worth anyone’s time. That, to me, is a reasonable test to determine whether the discussion has any merit as advice to help players learn and improve their game.
Top players don’t talk about strategies on SRK because it’d be totally stupid to give ANY help to your opponent getting inside your head when you’re playing them for thousands of dollars.
I’d be down for this if I thought it would actually bring in more talent to post, but sorry, it won’t.
sighs The last thing SRK needs is tools to ego boost. Because in the end that’s all this will accomplish. I’m all for polishing SRK forums and what not but this is not the way.
It seems illogical to be concern with people who are not posting than the ones who are.
Thing is because what of most he talked about was about 50/50 mixups and shit, doesn’t matter if you know his strategy, he’s still gonna out-guess you.
