Projected EVO 2009 game lineup?

HD Remix isn’t as much of a sure thing as I thought. It depends on how Akuma plays out - if he turns out to be worse than Old Sagat and ruin the game, Evo would probably just not run the game at all rather than ban stuff.

Something I just remembered…didn’t they ban the Steve infinite in Tekken 5.0? Perhaps they might give similar leeway to SC & Smash communities this year.

If nothing else, all this bullshit makes Guilty Gear look more appealing, eh? =)

I disagree. They ran AE, after all, a few years back over ST. HD Remix will get repped at least one year at Evo if people are playing it, and there’s no reason to think that people will stop playing it. The only thing I think could work against it are the oddball glitches, but I see no reason why it won’t get patched between now and August.

As for Akuma, if he’s all that, then they’ll probably go back to ST the following year if that’s what the playerbase does. If he isn’t, and/or he gets patched, then it’s a good bet the game will keep popping up for a good while. I mean, how many years did they run that Chun/Yun fest that is 3rd Strike?

Yeah I personally give a lot of respect to the Evo staff for running my favorite game year after year when once the top 8 comes they are usually subject to nothing but the top tier fest the game always ends up becoming at Evo. 2007 had a heck of a variety up until top 3 but that was only because mad people got randomed out. If I was only a little bit better I’d get Ibuki in there but…that sounds like it’ll have to be saved for 3S HD Remix. Which by then Ibuki will be top tier again.

I don’t see Evo even thinking in the least bit to remove HD Remix. Akuma is going to get patched and even if he does become worse than O.Sagat broke that isn’t going to stop people from wanting to try to beat him for at least one year. There’s no game that better brings back the nostalgia and true element of SF than Super Turbo (or well…any SF2 game for that matter). You just have to have a game that brings back the good old times on the line up and HD Remix is a nice refreshing way to throwback.

I was I had been paying attention to this when it was fresh, but this is pretty accurate. This is a lot of the majority sucking at melee, and viewing brawl as a chance to get good and start fresh. It doesn’t matter if a game is deep, as long as you can win right now. I had an entire group of friends do this, although some are starting to finally see the melee light again.

A decent portion of the smash community is migrating back towards melee, but it’s still a little tough to get the turnout because Brawl is new, and with most things, the majority assumes new = better.

Not to mention that when the melee scene fell off to the clearly inferior brawl, a lot of the melee players kind of gravitated away from the scene naturally. When there’s nothing to eat, a species dies out. Getting turnout is tougher because even though people would still play melee tournaments, they’re not paying attention and don’t realize they’re still there.

I wish Mr. Wizard would have given melee one more year before axing it for brawl. This might be a different discussion.

Unfortunately the people who made Smash Bros. really screwed up the tourney scene for Smash. They basically told tournament players “screw you…we don’t like what you’re doing with our game”. I don’t blame em for going back to Melee.

Hey Wiz

Arcana Heart 2 comes out in April :woot: :woot: :woot:

lollerskates?

You are crazy then, as CVS2 is the one game that is GUARANTEED to be taken out of the lineup.

3rd Strike is guaranteed to stay.

Mr.Wizard doesn’t like McRibs.

well considering that mr. wizard said “out with the old and in with the new” and how he had TvC videos on the srk homepage every week

tvc and sf2hdremix and sf4 are guaranteed

and since he said out with the old i think marvel might be gone and 3rd strike, but then again, marvel is the most hypeness in all the land, and 3s doesn’t really have a replacement so i dont know if they will be gone but i am willing to bet me having to get a tattoo that says princess on one of my balls that tvc sf4 and sf2hdremix will be at evo

so those 3 be locked down

I myself can’t really picture 3S leaving us anytime soon. But after that, I’m under the impression that everything else is up in the air about what’s going to get dropped.

um…

numbers forumla + $

BB/GGXX
SF4
STHD
TVC

SC4

most competitive formula

STHD
TVC

BB/GGAC
SF4

yeah…

I would like to see teams… that would be cool. singles aren’t nearly as cool!

i really wish 98 UM would get some Evo luv. Why don’t North Americans appreciate KOF?

Because Americans never got into KOF, so KOF done Sirlin style (which is what 98UM is when you think about it, replace Akuma with Krauser but Krauser ain’t as bad) isn’t enough to get Americans into KOF.

KOFXII has a slim chance though, IF it’s good.

Also UM takes longer then CvS2 to play, though maybe that’s just cause my style is dragging people into mudfights.

My prediction at the present time:

Shoe-ins:
SF4 (Naturally)
Tatsunoko vs Capcom (Seems to be taking off well so far)
HD Remix (With or without patches, this is happening)
Smash Bros Brawl (Biggest playerbase of any fighter in the states, honestly)

Very likely:
Soul Calibur 4 (The scene is pretty big, and there isn’t any real new Tekken on console, so)
Guilty Gear Accent Core (big turnout at the BYOC tourney last year and no console BB release puts this at good odds)

If any older game is to return “for old time’s sake” as was once stated, I’d say it would be Marvel 2. Biggest hype of all the games, isn’t boring as hell to watch, and an Evo/B tournament mainstay since it came out.

Reasoning for omissions:
CvS2 is a dying game. It takes forever to run, it’s old, and with limited resources, those are enough to take it off the roster.
3s is boring. It is also old. That should be enough to take it off the roster.
HD remix covers for ST, much as AE did some years back.
Tekken 6 and BlazBlue won’t have console releases in time for the event, and it’s not an arcade tourney, so.
Any KOF, except possibly 12, doesn’t have the following to get into Evo. 12 won’t simply because it’ll be too new in general to build up a playerbase in time for the event.
MK vs DC - are there even any tournaments for the game?
Smash Melee: Old as CvS2, so that should tell you something. Also less popular than Brawl, even if it is a better tourney game.

I assume you’re not a 3s player

And of course that’s the whole crux, isn’t it? No one outside of hardcore 3rd Strike players can watch those Chun-Li heavy finals and not find it boring.

I would say this reflects my thoughts almost to a T.

In-fact, I really hope those six ARE the chosen games for this year. But I see EVO staff replacing either GG or SC4 with 3S.

EDIT: Actually, Marvel should/will probably be in this mix somewhere lol. I guess the thinking is TvC will take its spot for this year’s tourney? I’d really like to see TvC there, currently, but duno if that’s gona fly with replacing MvC2.

Taking Marvel out is crazy. Yes, TvC has some similarities (but certainly a heck of a lot of differences), but did SF2 Turbo continued all these years despite the presence of 3S. Marvel can continue in the same fashion despite the release of TvC, just as SF 2 Turbo did. Marvel has been THE most hyped game every year…to end it all of a sudden would not make sense. Let it die naturally as interest wanes…if TvC is truly the MvC2 replacement (which I would argue it is not), then this will happen naturally over time, but certainly not yet.

make 3s teams…it’ll windle down the people entering it…and make it more fun to watch…
