Thank you. Well timed before someone asked Mugen to be at Evo.
MvC2 runs on freaking dead Dreamcast with awful blue screen problems and the community is 90% based on people who didn’t like console that much in the past. Yet, it has more hype than all the other games combined.
Third Strike is a slow ass boring 9 year old game that outnumbered both Melee and Brawl at Evo. And the game barely made it into Evo like 6 years ago.
The community made those games.
So, if you can’t get the numbers on a game that sold + 6 mil units and it runs fine on both GC and the Wii, you failed. Maybe Brawl does own Melee after all.
BTW, JoshTheFunk has a lot of great points. I agree with them all.
Even though MvC2 can’t be matched in hype and energy, I do think it would be fair to take all the old games out at once, to minimize complaints to some extent. If games like TvC won’t work, MvC2 can always be back, especially when the PS3 version hits PSN.
While SC and SSBB keep hating on rules, STHDR and even MK vs DCU are having a very positive response on the forums.
What this tells me is that the majority prefers Brawl, and the Melee minority–for whatever reason(s), valid or not–does not want to take the independent step away from that majority. This is not a judgement, merely a observation. I wouldn’t want to judge without first clarifying and understanding the aforementioned reasons.
People do organize Melee-only tournaments everywhere, but theres always that uneasy feeling that you know you could have had a bigger turnout by adding Brawl to the line-up.
People want to play Smash, people want to have fun playing Smash.
I am not saying that everyone plays Brawl just for the money, or that everyone that plays Melee hates Brawl and want it dead. With the release of Brawl it all became a little confused, and you could see the boards becoming divided.
I dont know how it will all turn out and I dont feel it will end soon.
However, I can hope the Brawl vs Melee debate will end someday. Maybe not totally but that it will go off our minds whenever you say Melee and Brawl in the same sentence.
Honestly, it might be a case of the kinda-sorta competitive majority vs. the extremely competitive minority. I see it as similar to how 3s has long been the most popular SF game but most top players hate it.
And I thought some Smash communities have gone back to Melee. For instance, I heard that was the reason All-Brawl is the official Brawl tournament at Final Round - the locals there all gave up on Brawl anyway and basically said “we don’t give a shit what you do with Brawl, as long as you have Melee we’re good.”
And power, MK vs. DC needs some real patching before it can even be in the discussion. I like it and have fun with it too, but Superman infinite, the Flash in general, and Green Lantern’s combo breaker keep it from being taken seriously.
MK vs DC won’t make it, ever. I’m sorry but when has an MK game ever been at EVO. MK vs DC although fun(ish) to play is not going to be a REAL tournament game. Sure people will have tournaments in MK vs DC but people still have tourny in fighters history and Dungeons and Dragons Iron and Blood (I’m sure somewhere it happens). Although MK vs DC is new, people, for some crazy reason, think it will be comparable to Marvel vs Capcom. I guess due to the whole comic book publisher vs game developer similarity but other than that midway games haven’t been taken seriously in a while. MK would be cool to have because I’m sure that Midway may be able to toss some sponsorship money at the table, to get people to recognize their brand as a real fighter, but I think the integrity of the fighting community won’t have MK vs DC as one of the 6.
I think it’s too early to tell the whole evo line up. I personally believe that MVC2 will still be there but if TVC drops big than people may be able to let MVC2 go. If TVC not big MVC2 still alive. I suspect MVC2 will probably be the only old game that stays in the lineup. CVS2, probably will be bumped. T5DR may make it but as has been noted T5 is dying quickly. 3S will probably say goodbye, being replaced by SF4. Smash will probably stay. My projections:
Definites:
SFIV
STHD
SSMB
The last three slots are going to be open. BB, TVC, MVC2, T5DR and SC4 will all be in consideration for these last slots. I’m sure. Likely winners will probably be MVC2, TVC and T5DR. But SC4 may come from behind.
One of the official games will probably be Tekken 6 anticipation theory fighting. Everyone will get a small whiteboard and an erasable marker and whoever yells the loudest wins.
It doesn’t matter too much though; the most hype event will be the rock-paper-scissors money matches in the BYOH (bring your own hand) area anyway.
Yeah, I’m following the game. Apparently patches will come though. Asides from Flash, the other things are possible to ban without much harm if Midway doesn’t change anything. And I’m not sure if Flash is all that offline.
Also, patch or nonpatch, new characters will appear as DLC, which may improve the overall gameplay and matchups.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not blindly advocating for MK vs DC. But the game got very positive feedback on the thread, very positive feedback on MK websites, and everybody is playing it. I played a few games and am still ranked 30 thousand whatever on Live right now, for instance. It may or may not be a good fit, but considering how some games are shaping up (no T6, no BB, SC and SSBB communities divided), it isn’t something to be ignored, IMO. And if the game receives those patches, it will become a pretty good game, with the downside of having MK in the title. It’s taboo lol
Brawl needs to be at EVO but with no modifications to the game, and no items (with possibly the exception of the final smash ball or whatever). If the Brawl ‘community’ also known as U.S. High Schools can’t accept that then just substitute Brawl for 3S/MvC2 or another older game that would have been dropped for 2009.
And 1v1 is the only option for Smash. No 2v2 matches.
I have a feeling CvS2 might stay. CvS2 was the last real staple fighter we had until Capcom took a vacation. Even though CvS2 hype is kinda zombified at this point. It ain’t like it can’t be revived. Everything else I’m unsure of.
