it has nothing to do with budget, it has to do with the fact that it is extremely difficult(more like improbable) to run that many games, in a 3 day weekend. Theres a reason the roster was cut to 6 games this past year…
and before you say it, extending to 4 days is overkill, and drags the event far too long. being at evo for 3 days, as it is, is very draining, as a player, even more draining as staff.
SF4 can replace 3S because they’re both Street Fighter, and 3S has degraded to Chun Chun Chun Chun Chun Ken. You can play them in SF4.
TvC can’t replace MvC2. TvC is not a Marvel game.
Most people play Magneto, Storm, Sent, Cable, Iron Man, Cyclops, Psylocke, Spiral, Doom, etc. None of these characters are in TvC. Plus the game engine for TvC is completely different, feels more like MvC1, without the Marvel characters.
cool, mvc2 is alive at sb3. GREAT. doesnt mean evo cant move on. sb3 and other places can still run mvc2 all they like. Your logic on why a game can or cannot be replaced is ridiculously flawed. with that logic, I can easily do waht you did and say sf4 cannot replace 3s cuz sf4 plays like a street fighter game, and 3s plays nothing like a street fighter game. I can literally take your statement, change out the tvc and marvel name, and change it to 3s and sf4, and change the character names to 3s names, and we have the same argument. apples and oranges.
the bottom line is these games are fucking old, and its time to retire em. i mean wtf, people crying for years that no new games come out anymore. now we get a shitton of new games, and now everyone wants to keep the old game. makes no sense.
keep getting stuck in the past with no willingness to move forward and evolve the scene.
uh 1-match 3s was bad enough – either way people don’t want to travel hundreds/thousands of miles to have their trip ended in two rounds.
“Evolution” doesn’t mean scrap everything previous, lol
a process of gradual, peaceful, progressive change or development, as in social or economic structure or institutions.
There’s no guarantee people are even going to travel for all these new games, that’s I think the silliest assumption this year. Look at shit like SC3, when SC2 had a scene and SC3 killlllled it. And it’s not like that crowd mostly played all kinds of different fighters. If you think about all the people that are ONLY travelling for Marvel/Guilty alone and scrap them, and think about how many people might travel JUST for like BlazBlue or something, I think it’s a poor trade. These could all end up being new VF5’s. And a lot of the new games are next-gen, which tons of people don’t even own still at a $400 entry (for the tournament console version).
Anyway, Evo’s been pretty clear so no one is going to change their minds or anything. Debating its decision is pretty pointless. Everyone wishes them luck.
The other majors will keep hosting whatever brings travellers, new and old. I know I’d hate to be arranging to get like 100 Playstation 3’s though, haha.
ed: there’s no reason for anyone to be completely dismissive to each others’ concerns here. Of course players have a right to complain – it’s a controversial decision and everyone on both sides cares about the scene. There’s no black and white.
I agree with most of your points. I just think that, let’s say hypothetically, a crappy unpopular game shouldn’t replace a staple, especially if the staple is gonna bring 3 times more players and 10 times more excitement.
The example is over the top, but MvC2 and TvC may end up a little like this, so by january we’ll probably have more info about how the community is feeling about competitive TvC.
Truth be told, if I were on the staff’s shoes I’d probably get rid of every single old game to avoid trouble and jealousy among each game’s communities.
SBO?
I agree with your points though. Let BYOC run other games, so they don’ get in the way of the 6 chosen by Evo.
Actually, this is pretty true. I’ve seen a lot more of this recently - since so many of the OG smashers hate Brawl, they’ve been trying other games. SC players did the same thing during SC3, as did SF players during Alpha 1 (hell, inkblot and some others got into VF2 as I recall).
This doesn’t seem to lead to a lot of new players in the long term, though - when a player’s main series releases a good new game, he’ll usually go back to that.
I can vouch for this. I played smash for years, and although I got into other fighters somewhat before brawl came out, since then I’ve picked up at least 2 “new” fighters (MvC2 and 3s, some alpha 2 and 3) and I at least watch vids from numerous other games like GG and CvS2. I also bought my own stick.
PLEASE bring melee back. Or cut out smash altogether. Even with items, brawl is nowhere near the excitement level of melee.
It seems pretty clear that EVO is gonna be going with the new games. However I find it hard to believe that MVC2 and/or 3s will be left out, since so many players go to evo just to play them. But I think if there werent apart of the official lineup, then their respective communities would no doubt run side tournaments for them anyway. Look at GG, they ran their own side event are probably destined to do so forever.
An all new lineup would be more preferable, looking at it in terms of sponsorships aswell as enjoyment imo. All new games, with new and old players, not knowing who is gonna take home the prizes.
Anyway my prediction
SF4
STHDr
SSBB
SC4
TVC
latest tekken
I can’t believe MvC2 and 3S would not be at EVO. Certainly should rattle the community.
Obviously ST:HRD and SF4 are locks.
Throw in Brawl and Tekken 6 for good measure.
SC4 I would pass on for any other game.
TvC is a tossup, while we know that the Wii (because of Brawl) will have a strong presence, how much enthusiasm is there in his community for TvC? And how many people have a Wii arcade stick?
