Preparing for SG

Having only really put solid time into ST and SFIV, the SG system is obviously quite different. To those of you that have played SG, what game could I be playing right now that would most prepare me to start learning SG when it comes out? I thought Mahvel 2 or some Arksys activity, but I’m not sure. Just getting used to team play is going to be a jump, so mvc2 or cvs2 sounded good. Thoughts?

MvC2 and Guilty Gear XXAC would be the two best in my opinion.

Most of the game mechanics and characters draw from these two.

Awesome, I’ve got both of those games. That GGXXAC guide that hit the front page couldn’t’ve come at a better time for me then, haha. I can definitely see some character parallels. Peacock reminds me of Dizzy and Testament with all of those amazing zoning tools. Ms. Fortune’s head tech like Venom’s balls and Bridget’s Roger, etc. too bad there’s no team GG game.

Guilty Gear X: Advance Edition

Is there a way to play either of these games on PC without resorting to not-really-legally downloading them + running a Dreamcast Emulator?

I would also think…

Older Versus series titles
Darkstalkers

would help

I’ve gotten GG + PS2, used, for under 60 bucks. Now that MvC2 got rereleased, you could probably pickup a used DC + MvC2 for less than 20 bucks. Assuming you can find a working DC. Or I guess if for some reason you just have to play these games on PC, there is a PC version of GGXX#r.

MvC2 on PSN/XBL isn’t worth it?

It ain’t accent core, but you can buy #Reload off of Good Old Games for only $6.

Also the 360/ps3 port of MvC2 is good enough. There’s some differences from the dreamcast version but if you just wanna get a feel for the game it’s still awesome.

E: also recommend Xmen vs Street Fighter. You can play it on GGPO or just in MAME. It doesn’t have assists but the button layout is the same as skullgirls and the combo system feels similar IMO.

Yeah when i think of Skullgirls im immediately drawn to XvSF for some reason.

I love you! Bought it <3

Finger exercises and memorization of all the moves. So intense!

The night before the WGC I sat in the hotel lobby memorising the Cerebella Wiki so I could just get stuck in right away. Worked like a charm!

Yeah, I think Cerebella, Peacock, and Ms. fortune require the most time to properly master, as they have a lot of moves and variations according to which button is press.

Yeah, this game is like a mix of Darkstalkers+Early Marvel Vs. Games+Guilty Gear. I think this out ta be the easiest fighting game to learn, as their are no complicated command moves. Cerebella is like the most fun grappler I’ve ever seen in a fighter.

This needs qualifying/explaining. SG looks no where near as broken and infinite happy as XvSF nor does it have anything similar to MvC’s Variable Cross and it looks no where near as bland as MvSF.

I’ve played it. You want a good answer? nothing. The game is basic to learn and unique. It does feel like an older vs game pre mvc2 but it also has its own feel to it. Just play when it comes out and learn from that.

He’s talking about how they play / work. Most everything before MvC1 was heavily based around footsies on the ground, you didn’t really have the super jumping craziness that MvC2 became well known for.

To me the game plays like 1/3 MvC2 / 1/3 Guilty Gear AC / and 1/3 Darkstalkers.

With a tiny pinch of Melty thrown in.

I would say mvc2 / GGAC /VSav / XvSF would give you a good ground on how to approach learning the SG engine later.

@d3v About the early vs series. Don’t just think of those games in the highest form they reached. On other levels there’s a lot of ground and air game similar to what would be a good base for approaching how to learn the system. XvSF for example has a very open combo engine, it lead to the infamous infinites, but playing around that and coming out with your own combos is insanely fun, which can be good practice on how to approach developing your own SG combos.

I’d add 3S to the list, especially if you’re planning on playing Parasoul. She seems very 3S-like.

The question then would be, IPS aside would anyone who’s tried it say that Skullgirls’ combo engine as open as XvSF’s?
