I’ll be a bit more specific in the OP about Ohio/Kentucky players being the only ones who will qualify at Arcade Legends.
Also, you make a good point about the $250. However, there will also be money going toward bonuses for other main tourney games. I think it was a mistake to post up the sum so early, so for now I will retract the exact sum of $250, but assure everyone in the 5v5 that they will receive a prize for first place.
awesome… the 5v5 is up right on… the extra $250 (if it is indeed extra) should definitely go toward some general entry tournament to help motivate some competitors… the point of regional team fights isn’t to win any kinda prize, it’s to represent your colors and give your supporters a literal hometown hero to cheer for… so how are we gonna decide the indy team?.. do i gotta talk to my local buds to figure that one out?.. also i vote for cvs2 as well…
Sounds like this is taking off nicely. I’m excited, I’ve never been to a tournament before going to try to make PowerUp 2010 my first. Also thanks for the avatar pack, even if I can’t make it to the tournament, I’m still gonna rep as hard as I can.
I want bonus prize money (or a separate prize) to go to all the main tournament games and to the winners of the 5v5. Depending on pre-registration numbers we will see how much each game will receive.
Blue is for staff only. Black and white will be up for grabs for general attendees both at the tournament and online (with in-person pick up). Tell me what you all think of the design. Thanks.
Don’t forget to vote for the third arcade cabinet game. Up for voting are SF Alpha 3 Upper, CvS2 and ST. We can’t do an official poll so just post it up and we’ll count the votes. CvS2 leads as of right now
so i was thinkin that the 5v5 ranbat for sf4 isnt the best idea for a main event if ssf4 is out in time for this tourny. i ment to talk to you about this last night nathan but i forgot :smokin: so ill do it here before it gets to close. now this could just be me but if ssf4 is out im not gonna give a shit about boring old regular sf4 so it wouldnt be very hype assuming everyone feels the same way i do. so if no one might not care about the game why have it as the main event. now i know there is no way to be sure that ssf4 will be out by then but perhaps you should rethink the main event just in case. that would also make the qualifiers useless too…even if you decide to hold them and ssf4 comes out and no one cares about sf4 then the qualifiers would just be a waste of time and you couldnt say hey well lets just keep the teams the way they are cuz it will be for a different game. the characters might not match up even if the new gameplay is gonna be close to the original, some ppl might not play the same characters and that could cause some problems for the teams as well. so i dunno it might just be me but i dont know if the main event is gonna be a good one with what possibly could be an outdated game. and if you decide to just wait and hear about ssf4 then it could be too late to run all the qualifiers for either game.
I think I remember discussing this a while ago on Dayton thread or something, but basically if Super is out, the game will be run, but Nathan has apprehensions about posting anything up about having Super 4 tournaments until he knows for sure the game will be out. Also, I think what’s going to happen is the qualified people don’t necessarily have to play the character they qualified with in the qualifier, which frees them up to switch if Super comes out. Anyway, I think your worry is more based on the ambiguous or misleading language in the format/rules and not based on what will most probably happen. Unless I’m wrong.
You, sir, have hit the nail on the head. All you said is exactly what I thought about when trying to decide on a main event and looking for suggestions on it. If Super releases after, or during, the qualifiers, what is supposed to happen with the people who have already qualified but were yearning to play (insert new character here)? And what about character changes and new matchups? But, as you say, if we wait until we know for sure about Super, then we may not have time for qualifiers at all!
It’s a conundrum, for sure, but a SF main event is almost a necessity due to the game’s overall popularity when compared to everything else running at PU2010. So here’s what I’m thinking when it comes to troubleshooting the 5v5:
**
If Super comes out in time for PU2010, we will run it, and the 5 teams only need to come prepared to play with 5 unique characters from the SSFIV roster.** This is not a big deal for Michigan, Indiana, or Illinois because they will be coming to conclusions about their teams in their own ways. What this is a real concern for is the Ohio/Kentucky qualifiers that will be held at AL.
So, what happens if Super drops while the qualifiers are happening?
Those who have already qualified retain their spot, and they will have the option of choosing any different character to play with come main event time. They can wait until all remaining qualifiers have finished, but then they are obligated to choose either a new character or keep the character they qualified with. Then the final Ohio/Kentucky I and Ohio/Kentucky II teams will be selected.
This is not a perfect solution because it may keep someone from qualifying with Ryu (for example), because the first couple of qualifiers fill the Ryu quota (which would be 2). But then these qualified Ryu players may decide to switch to Cody and/or Ken (for example) after the qualifiers have ended. The third Ryu player now can’t qualify with their main. However, it does give the already qualified players a fair shake as far as balance changes. The only remedy to this side-effect is if the already qualified players are willing to lock in a different character before the qualifiers end, and thus free up a character slot. Then the other Ryu player can get their shot at qualifying with their main. That is, as long as they still want to play Ryu in SSFIV.
That’s some tricky stuff and leaves a lot of room for bad situations as far as people being happy with the qualifiers and the final Ohio/Kentucky teams. The good news is that this is only relevant if Super drops during the qualifiers. If we find out that Super is dropping before May, then we may be able to simply crunch the qualifying tournaments closer together and avoid the mess. Which leads to the next question:
What happens if Super releases after the qualifiers have ended and final teams for Ohio/Kentucky I and Ohio/Kentucky II have been decided?
All the players can switch to any character that they wish, as long as their team has no duplicate characters.
Those who have qualified have proven they are the best. Now they get the option to respond to the balance changes in SSFIV. For the teams from Indiana, Michigan, and Illinois, as long as they bring a 5 player team with no duplicate characters, I’m happy regardless of whether we end up running SFIV or SSFIV.
Again, I realize these aren’t perfect solutions that will make everyone happy, but under these hypothetical circumstances I think they are some of the best possible responses. I’ll put this information inside the qualifier spoiler on the OP.
ok so what happens if say two ppl on a team play two different characters in reg sf4 but they play the same character in ssf4 how is it decided on who gets to play who. will it be up to the players to settle it themselves or is it gonna be who qualifies first picks new characters first. or maybe switching players to other teams to make sure they have different characters.
also im concerned about the differences in the game. as an example lets say that mike south doesnt make it on either team thru the sf4 qualifiers but he ends up bein the best at ssf4 but the qualifiers are all over. does that just mean he gets screwed out of playin the game he is best at cuz he couldnt pass a qualifier for a different game. even tho the changes to gameplay cant be that different they could be different enough to change the top players of ssf4 over sf4
To the first question. Yes, it will be up to them to decide who will play the SSFIV character. Once the teams are decided upon there will be no trading players. Teams will be decided upon immediately after the final qualifier and will depend upon order of qualification and the existence of duplicate characters who have qualified. Once the teams are on their own they can debate and arrange themselves into their proper order of play and decide who will play which character, if SSFIV releases in time for PU2010.
To the second concern, I understand completely. The changes in the game could potentially be enough to where qualifier results may not have been the same had SSFIV been played. At this point we have to simply accept the fact that Super has come out at an inconvenient time for PU2010’s main event, and move forward with the established Ohio/Kentucky teams. Remember, this is only one SSFIV event that will be held. If Mike South (or other SSFIV player) couldn’t qualify in SFIV, now he gets the chance to win the SSFIV teams tourney on Friday, and the SSFIV singles tourney on Saturday.
Again, it’s not perfect, but under these hypothetical circumstances it’s a good solution that will ensure a fun SSFIV main event. I’m always open to suggestions; as long as they try to keep the solutions as simple as possible.
yeah logic dictates that when SSF4 drops all SF4 events become super events by default… also if ai didnt say this before i vote CvS2 for atleast 1 cab tourney
focus dash cancel edit: hey osi man lemme know who you designate as ‘captain’ or watever of the indiana team… no doubt it’s gonna be one of the ft. wayne players but i gotta know so i can get the drop on a team spot… and what is the little bullseye design on the aaback of the neck of the shirts?
I’m not designating anyone captain of the Indiana team at this time. It really comes down to who wants to organize the team from Indiana, whether or not they themselves actually get on the team. For example, AaronS from Michigan is organizing the Michigan team through his ranbats.
I’ll venture into the Indiana and Illinois threads and see who will want to be the organizer behind the teams for those two states.
The “bullseye” design is mostly aesthetic, however I did think about it a bit while doing it and concluded that:
*The red ring is the ring of blood that represents the stage upon which players fight.
*The blue center is a center of calm for the player.
*The red center on the staff shirts is really more for proper aesthetics. Blue center on blue shirt doesn’t work, lol. However, it can be representative of the hot chaos it is to be a TO.
i still dont think that the 5v5 is the best main event considering the uncertainty of the release date and the confusion with all the rules and even having qualifiers to enter a game thats not the same game as the qualifier. yes i think its a good idea to have but not as your main event, there are just too many problems. but hey its not my tournament and i expect you to do what you want i just wanted you know how i felt about it thats all
to me it just seems that the grand finals of the ssf4 tourny will be more hype anyway…unless its something fucking stupid like turtle balrog vs turtle balrog.
