Potato... Potahto? Basic Hugo Q&A Thread

Pretty sure s.MP is 1f. I usually land stuff pretty consistently if it’s 2f or more, but I RARELY land s.MP, even when I plink.

I have been on a losing streak. All of Hugo’s worst match ups are also the most popular characters. When someone is intent on running away, how can you get in? Lariat is a joke against experienced players and most of Hugo’s jumping normals have a terrible hurtbox. Landing one or two j.hp into a c.mk or something only to be pushed out again is frustrating, and I seem to whiff BB a lot which leaves him wide

Show me a video or give me advice on how to beat someone content with chipping you to death, because online that is the game. I see so many great Hugo players but hardly ever fighting someone trying to lame them.

Did you read the 1st post? There’s a good write up about how to play Hugo generally. If you post a vid in the video section, we can give you a more in depth strategy. I’m sure there are videos in the video post that gives you the answers you’re looking for.

As far as the other stuff you mentioned:

-Empty jump SPD or ultra fucking owns people that like to trip guard.
-Learn to hit confirm j.HP into cr.LK xx Lariat or LP SPD or LK Meat Squasher
-If they’re running away from you, they’re pushing themselves in the corner, which is where you want them.
-Patience.

PSN or Xbox?

So I was losing out to mashed dps after blocking Ryu’s slow ass hk tatsu and trying to punish with spd. Looking at the frame data, that tatsu is only minus 2 on block and Hugo’s spds all have 2f startup.

What’s a good option here? Backdash when it’s over and kara ultra throw? Look for a throw to tech? Seems lame.

You should practice doing a reversal SPD after a blocked tatsu. It’s the best option and it’s easy to mash it out.

If you don’t want to do that you have to guess tbh.

hk tatsu won’t hit crouchers. Unlike with the rest of the cast he goes through with Hugo he doesn’t, you can just hit cr.mp if you can’t get the spd. Otherwise you can block it standing and do a reversal spd (you can meat spin), tatsu should hit three times, just do the 360 after the first time it hits, there’s a big enough window where it shouldn’t be that hard.

If you’re really bad ass you can whiff punish (because of the whiff on crouchers) with lp/mp.clap (lp can hit airborne into U2), mp can hit grounded.

So it is a legit punish? I was under the impression that if I have 2f startup and he has 2f recovery, then my first active frame for spd would be his first frame to jump out. I will have to go to training and work on the timing.

Now this I like. I need to remember that I can let go of the stick during blockstrings like an asshole and bide my time.

when frame data says something has 2f start-up it usually means it becomes active on frame 2, which means it actually only has 1f of start-up.

Hey a bit off topic but how to find the new costumes on xbox live?

Hallo everyone. My first post here.
Could anyone explain to me how to perform “Meat Squasher”?
I try and try but I can’t get it to work. It comes pretty randomly…
Thanks in advance!

I do B, DB, D, DF, F, UF, U + K. You need to have a U instead of just UB or UF in the motion because Hugo has so many K specials.

Thanks man! You worte exactly like I wanted to see! Thanks!
You are right! I was getting Lariats but now it is working!!!

Hey guys,

after a long time without Hugo, I thought I return once more.
But I’ve got one huge problem with Hugo… :frowning:

Im currently maining Gief and these characters, Hugo and Gief, feel like they couldnt be any more different.
Theoretically, both are grapplers and try to get in.
I’ve got my way figured out how to achieve that with Gief “easily”, but what am I supposed to do with Hugo?

Right now im trying to walk my opponent into the corner with cr.mp / st. mp, as well as hopkicks for the occasional fireball and jump lp to get over fireballs (seriously best move for jumping over fireballs…) but what do i do at this point? Im facing invincible reversals, normal throws, backdashes, backjumps, neutral jumps, Forward jump crossups, focus attacks etc… It feels like trying to read the opponent isnt worth it with Hugo, since everything you do, even normals, can be punished hard and commonly end in either setup situations or being fullscreen away again, yet this time with only 50% life :frowning: Am I missing something or am I just hopeless? xDD

You need to look for patterns in the opponent’s game and punish accordingly.

For example, against Rose players, they love to use sprial, and then backdash out. If you have U2, use it after blocking sprial.

Against reversals, you gotta expect them on the opponent’s wakeup. Always check the opponent’s meters, because they will almost always use an EX move/Ultra to keep you out.

Use LK or EX Meat Squasher when you’re close to the opponent. Usually, they can’t react fast enough to jump. Be careful with this move, though. You have to be precise with your inputs.

Against jumps, you can use BB, St. HP, or Cr. HP. Try to always have meter stocked for EX BB, that move is seriously good.

why do a lot of top level players us cr lkxx ex clap as a block string?

It doesn’t come out as fast as cr lk xx lp clap, which is also not a true string, why choose the ex version?

I’m guessing no pushback?

as crazydiamond said:
a) no pushback
b) ridiculous +12 on block

which basically means you can go right into another cr.lk/st.lk xx lp clap
since lp clap is only +1 on block, the followup cr.lk/st.lk wouldnt be safe.

With cr.lk/st.lk xx ex clap cr.lk/st.lk xx lp clap you basically gain two chances to catch the enemy pressing a button and counterhitting them, once you conditioned him not to do anything and just block, you’re free to lk meatsquasher which also results in ~320 damage (i think) if you follow up with st.mp in the corner.

And once they start jumping out of lk meatsquasher, just do mk lariat instead. it catches them and looks just like lk meatsquasher.

cr.lk/st.lk are such great tools…

But do u guys not challenge people who just jab in between the string? Ex clap has more startup than lp clap. If there was a way to train players to block after my cr lk to begin with, that would be great. Feels like my scene has figured out that part of hugo already

Use st.lk and SPD them.
