st lk is -1 on block. spd is 2 frames. if i face a 3 frame jab, which is gonna win? the spd or the jab? since they have the same speed, which has priority?
Wait, st./cr.lk into lp clap is a frametrap, everything at 3f or slower should get beaten except if it’s invincible, in which case you shouldnt be doing anything anyway.
Any light into lp clap gets beaten by 4f normals. Record Hugo doing a light into lp.clap and then just mash jab after blocking the light for a counter hit. It even works at max distance most of the time.
The utility of light normals cancelled into clap has to be looked at at a much higher level than just taking frame data into account. YES, there’s about a 5f gap, so everyone can punish (since everyone in SF4 has at least 1 4f or faster normal) given that they’re in range. But in practice, not everyone’s going to be able to execute a frame perfect normal (a reversal special yes). So, the risk/reward is definitely in Hugo’s favor. Hugo is at such an advantage on hit, that if a trade occurs, it will generally be in his favor (e.g. trade lp.clap, cr.lp xx lariat). Also keep in mind that at certain ranges of block cr.lk, he can connect an lp.spd, which leaves only a 3f gap on block which may not be in range to hit Hugo, but IS in range for an lp.spd.
You can’t train every opponent, but what you can do is make them think about their options. It’s a terrible idea to attempt to punish cr.lk or st.lk on block, so it means they have to react to the clap or guess. IF they’re guessing, then you have freedom to use all of your options. Say for example, Hugo does cr.lk xx lp.clap, Ryu decides to cr.mk, he does it frame perfect once, so he keeps doing it when you cancel into clap, You then decide to do cr.lk, ex.meat squasher. His cr.mk gets scooped up OR he says, I can cancel into fireball So i beat meat squasher, but then next time, you do cr.lk (wait), then ex.lariat. Beats his cr.mk and his fireball. Then he gets really smart, he thinks to cr.mk xx ex.dp, none of Hugo’s options can beat that right. Then you block. Hugo just needs to win the Rock Paper Scissors once to get really big damage.
Just like on wakeup where you do clap to either whiff or hit meaty, the moment they’re become accustomed to the heavy blockstun after blocking a clap, the quick recovery is confusing and thus they leave themselves open to get grabbed by spd or U1 because they’re waiting for the blockstun to end. It’s all a part of the meta game, just because something is punishable in theory, doesn’t mean that it will always work in practice.
Edit:
Also cr.lk xx ex.clap almost always put you in lp.spd range.
It’s acutally possible to react to the cancel or just time it so you only have to press once. But if they are mashing, canceling into lk.lariat or doing EX-SPD and U1 after your recovery beats the mashing. Otherwise yeah, you can try to counterpoke.
cr.lk xx lk.lariat, or SPD, just beware different DPs have different “grounded” recovery. For example Ken’s lp.dp doesn’t have a lot of grounded recovery although it has recovery, so it’s really easy to miss the punish and get dp’d when you attempt to punish.
For anyone on stick having problems with kara ultra throw, i assign lp to my 8th button (left trigger), plinking with ny ring and middle finger. If i want EX i tap mk with my pointer finger. Very consistent if you’re used to traditional plinks.
Question: any tips to land U2 after a focus lvl 3/lvl2 ?
I know its possible because i managed to land it on sakura, but after that, i couldnt do it again.
I’m having huge trouble doing cr.lp/lk xx lk lariat in real matches. I can pull it off 100% in training, but only about 20% in real matches (lariat never comes out). This puzzles me because I don’t have any trouble doing combos with the exact same motions with other characters, only Hugo. What’s different about him?
In what situations are you trying to do cr.lp/cr.lk xx lariat? There’s not a whole lot that could go wrong aside from combo anxiety/lack of combo confidence.
For example after a flying body press or after a lp clap. It must be something related to timing. Maybe it’s hugo’s size that is throwing it off somehow. Problem is, I can’t go to training and figure it out since there it works every time.
