Portland Ranbats!

So alot of people have talked about it. But not alot of people Have been doing to much about it so here it is.

Im gonna start running ranbats at Versus every Thursday starting October 1st Running through December 17th. Here is what im Figuring to due. By All Means **THIS IS NOT FINAL, I AM OPEN TO SUGGESTIONS, THATS WHY I AM ANNOUNCING IT NOW**

Pot: $3 a person. Lets be honest here, not alot of us are making the dough right now, but i know there will be a lack of interest if this ranbat isnt for anything but personal pride. So i figure this is a good number that keeps it friendly and gets a little something. this is all for portland to get better together.

Placing Points:

1st: 10 points
2nd: 9 points
3rd: 8 points
4th: 7 points
5th: 6 points

Most Improved/Great Showing: 5 Points. This is for people to kept encouraged to keep playing and to recognize the people that have put in work. This can go to anybody, no matter what you place and will be on a general consensus of the people there. If there is too much argument about who it should be givin too, points will not be given.

Double Points/Special Nights: This will be random nights. I have ideas for Name 2 vs 2 nights out a hat, Pull a character out a hat and run with it the entire tournaments. Stuff like that, This to

A: Give Portland a wider range of characters
B: Have more Portland people to work together more> THIS SERIOUSLY need to start happening more. We are great individuals, but a crap group.
C: Make OVERALL PORTLAND BETTER! Which is the main Focus of these tournament.

Times: The Times of these ranbats will be kind of array to be honest cause i am dependent on rides, but im hoping to start every tournament before 9 P.M. again i am hoping. to due so. if i can make something more solid happen i will.

Versis: I have to hammer this down. THIS WILL NOT TAKE OVER VERSUS i repeat THIS WILL NOT TAKE OVER VERSUS Versus is a spot for all gamers to come and play all games " no matter how gross, : ) " This tournament will be ran on 1 T.V. Unless called for special occasions. I understand this will probably call for a slower tournament but HEY, we are there for a long while, and **ITS A PRIVILEGE ** to be running tournaments at Versus, lets not abuse it. most players are at versus for the long hull anyway, so this really shouldn’t be a problem.

Side Arguments: I read the virtuafightclub forum about people’s ideas for ranbats. Let me hammer this down really quick. your gonna be hard press to get me to make divisions in these ranbats b/c really, who really wants to be called a amateur, rookie or whatever. We are just players, nobody needs these titles to make them feel better or worse then others. To be more honest: we dont need any more division in the portland ranks.

Im gonna leave the rest open for discussion until a couple days before the tournaments start. Im open to anybody from anywhere’s input on this to run this as best and smooth as possible. LETS STEP OUR GAME UP PORTLAND…

Finally somebody got he ball rolling on this.

I like the idea for the special nights. Drawing chars. out of a hat could be interesting.

GOOD SHIT omne, this is something I’d like to see. If you guys get some shit really rolling down there then we’d have dedicated scenes all across the coast, Seattle, Portland, Nor-cal and So-cal. Hella tight.

nice, im glad so many people are on board, good shit for stepping up and trying to organize it.
my only questions are about the money, do we really even need a pot? and if we do i like the idea of just throwing in enough for the 1st place to get their 6 dollar back tbh. and because i dont like the idea of someone lowering in rank because they dident have enough money(im not saying 3 dollars is alot but there HAS been times when i dident have an extra 3 bucks tbh).
also with the points, so if theres 14 entrees 1st place gets 14 points and 14th place gets 1 point? is this how other states do it or did you come up with that point system on your own? it sounds good with every rank potentially only being 1 point up from the next, we just have to make sure its not possible to get an insurmountable lead but again if your only getting 1 point more than the next guy it sounds good. the only thing i can think of is someone in near the bottom of the ranks - would it be possible for them to climb the ladder and be rank 1 with your suggested point system? it looks like(from my assumptions of how the points work) if current bottom rank comes in 1st theyd move about half way up the ranks and would need to place 1st(or get at least 10+ points) a few more times before theyd be in the top 3ish. now thats my thinking and it occurs when everyone has only 1 tournament worth of points stacked up, but would it be that easy if/when someone places 1st 3 weeks in a row and has 30 points vs the last guy who has 3(imagine 10 entrees, 1st place getting 10, and last getting 1)?
i know a consistant bottom rank shouldent be expecting to get to rank #1 in a week or two but those are things that need to be thought about and ironed out(the points and their complications like how people’s totals will look after 3 tournaments) but ill stop asking questions untill you explain how the points work now lol.

this sounds fun. I love tourneys plus I really should practice more than I do.

Fuck and Yes. I live 2 hours away but would make an effort to get to this. BTW, what games are we talking here? HD remix or SF4?

SF4, it would be hard to do 2 games at least for 1 person. we’d probably need another dedicated organizer if there was demand for another game.

Sounds awesome to me. If you want something like a little web site for posting results and current standings, I could whip something up.

God, finally. Thanks for steppin’ up OMNE. Definitely try to talk to Ray about some of his ideas for the ranbats, I think he has some great ideas for this thing, and he’s always at Versis, so he might want to help run this…? Haha, hope I’m not saying anything that isn’t correct. Oh, Pasqual is interested in helping run these as well, as another person who can show up if you aren’t available.

Ah man, that’d be pretty amazing bumperfront. Though that’s just my opinion.

I would like there to be a pot, for sure. We were talking about a $1 entry fee last I remember, and you’d like it to be $3, so maybe $2 could be a good compromise. This could give us a decent pay out for more than the top one (prolly top three? depending on popularity).

…So excited.^^

Ill probably discuss this more at Versus this thursday. Yall know who i am so just come up and talk to me.

I can help out with this, but I don’t wanna be the only person running these.

I recommend at least 3 people helping out in order for this thing to work.

you think you guys are gonna have a decent turn out?

Well it all depends on what you call a “decent” turn out. At the last tourny Versis held, there were about 18 entrants. While i know we wont get 18 people every ranbat, I at least hope we can get somewhere in the ballpark

I’m down for running brackets and keeping track of stuff and whatnot. I can bring my laptop so it’s all gravy and we can make backups every week and host them on fileshare sites in case I’m stepped out for a week or whatever.

A buck or two entry sounds good to me. There is merit to the multi-level league idea but I will let everyone else discuss and decide that; we can try one way and if it doesn’t feel perfect we can always flip to the other for the next season.

What needs to get nailed down is:

  1. Every week? Every 1st and 3rd Thursday? Once a month? Omne’s OP says weekly but would like to hear a consensus on this before we go any further.

  2. Buy-ins/payouts. Winner take all or 70/20/10?

  3. For special titles like a Weekly Most Improved, would this be verbal discussion? Dropping a vote in a hat would cut back on arguments at least but may be less productive.

That’s all I got for now, will talk to you guys tomorrow night at Versis.

My plan for your answers as it is: once again things can change but final decision will come from me

  1. Every week that im there. Either your apart of it or your not?

  2. 70/20/10

  3. Verbal discussion.

Lets please kill all ideas of running separate leagues, no point of separating players in a already limited scene of folks that want to get better.

Round Robin chart here:

The beauty of Round Robin is that everyone has to play everyone.

Nobody goes 2 and out, unless there’s only 3 players =)

i dunno about every week, i can only speak for myself but itd be hard for me to make it out there literally every single week to try and keep my rank current, id imagine it could be hard for others as well.
id vote bi weekly at most, imo we shouldent want to “have as many ranbats as possible” what we should be aiming for is to get everyone in the community together at least once a month(more likely twice a month) and get some legit portland ranks going.

edit:

im not exactly sure what you mean by this, but it sounds like we need set dates and co-organizers, so if there is a preset date that you cant make it to for some reason the wheel wont stop turning. ray and pasqual already offered to help and im down too so there’s 3 on board already.
also ive come to see the merit in a pot for ranbats, though id still vote to keep it cheap - preferably around 1 or 2 dollars. and id still like to hear a run down of how your point system works(OMNE), and also a explanation of how round robin would operate(RayBlade).

I can’t be there tonight : (

I have job interview early tomorrow and I want to look/feel my best for that. But I will try to make it out more frequently in the future.

Good luck with that, haven’t seen you at Versis in a minute so you hopefully you’ll be back soon.

I think Omne meant we’d run it basically every week but the wording was a little weird. There’d be a set schedule since multiple people would be able to run it if one of the others was missing.

Round Robin is a full play format. Everyone plays everyone. It takes a little longer but means everyone is getting to play a full tourney’s worth of matches or more and can’t say “I only lost because I ran into x matchup twice” and they also get their money’s worth of matches.

I’ve seen it used for pools before brackets at Melee tourneys (with top 1 or 2 advancing) and it’s always worked pretty well. For ties you have the two or three people play each other in another Round Robin; if more than 3, you do a mini bracket usually.

Although would we want to do sets or just single games for each matchup if we did RR? I know sets are better but it may come down to time constraints, especially if we end up with 15 people playing on one tv.

Personally, I’d like best 2 out of 3 games (2/3 rounds). We can do all possible matches in case some players show up rather late.

If Fight Night starts at 6pm and we wait until 9pm to start start up matches, 3 hours is wasted and we’ll be pressed for time, assuming Nick has to do other things at 10pm.

The downside of all this, is that it isn’t fair for the people who show up at 6pm who are unable to play the guys who arrive much later.

Example: 6pm guy comes in, plays 10 people and wins all matches. 9pm guy comes in, plays 6 matches (4 people left before 9pm guy showed up) and wins all matches as well. Who wins this Round Robin set?

Can someone print out the sign up sheet and round robin bracket from virtuafightclub.ning.com ? I’d like to see this set up tonight.
