Ice types are weak because their four weaknesses are extremely common and have powerful moves and Pokemon in their categories. Even if they got some resists that wouldn’t help them much, and removing a weakness wouldn’t make sense (Fire melts Ice, and Rock, Metal, and Fists crush it.) Maybe giving Water a weakness to Ice and making Ice resist Water would work, but I don’t see that happening.
Also get hype for Fairy type. We need a title change: Do You Believe in Fairies?
Ice being weak to Steel isn’t absolutely necessary, especially since metal can snap under cold temps. The lack of resists hurt more than the weaknesses. Being able to switch-in matters just as much, and for that you need resistances. Ice should AT LEAST be resistant to Water.
I would say the lack of resistance hurts Ice types more than their overly-common weaknesses if it wasn’t for the fact that most ice types have ass physical defense and their weaknesses are perfect for taking advantage of that. And I guess GF thought Steel just needed another type to hit effectively (and ignored Poison.)
They could use more resistances though. Water, Bug… Maybe Normal?
Water, Ice and Grass would be enough. Ice, like Poison was designed to be a complementary type for the most part, so I don’t think it has to be totally redefined, just improved. Unlike other types that can benefit defensively from dual typng, Ice ALWAYS brings the primary type down defensively.
A Fairy/Steel, Fairy/Dragon, or Fairy/Poison would make for interesting dual types.
It’s been rumored that Mawile will become Steel/Fairy…
Back to actually confirmed info, you can customize your player character’s gear(clothes, hats, accessories) so yay for customization! That video is awesome… I love how Helioptile unfurls its frill/ears as it attacks and Pancham is dat dude. Since its always carrying that leaf in its mouth, I hope that means it can get access to Leaf Blade and such. Fletchling seems to have an arrow motif–I’m really excited to see where they go with that theme in its evolution(s)… and damn, Gogoat is a big mofo. I should have realized when it was said that it could be ridden, but wow. That thing looks like it could be a bruiser (watch GF give it Spinda-level stats and an awesome ability as ‘balance’)
C’mon and announce the Fairy-type already, GameFreak! We know its going down, so stop pussy-footing around the typings of Sylveon and the new Legendaries…
Though about that myself. If the typing is legit Fairy/Steel types would be beastly. Fairy/Dragon would be nice due to that Dragon immunity. Dragon-killing Dragon Pokemon.
Yeah Fire and Ice are great offensive typings, but their weakness are just everywhere–some combination of Stealth Rock, Stone Edge, Earthquake, Close Combat, Superpower, Surf, and Scald are used on every competitive team there is.
All of those moves are 100 base power or above, save Surf/Scald, but those tend to be boosted by rain, so they have equivalent strength, Stealth Rock rapes Ice & Fire types on the switch-in for at least 25% HP(pray you’re not part Flying) and all save Stone Miss are all 100% accurate and being carried by some of the best Pokemon in the game.
I hope that with the addition of this new type, GameFreak reworks the type chart slightly, because it really sucks that Fire and Ice-types have such horrible defensive weaknesses, yet their moves are on everything else, because offensively they are so useful.
The only type that I feel GF has truly developed over time is Bug. Once considered a joke type, it has really expanded into one of the games hard hitting rollers. At the same time, blocking the power creep of fighting attacks (something that steels struggle with) is huge. Fire and flying attacks can be seen a mile away, and rock moves are mostly inaccurate. Stealth Rock still gives most Bug types issues, but they are working around more ways in dealing with that (spinners, magic bounce, etc.)
Hypothetically speaking, I can see fairy types being somewhat overpowered unless GF expands the movepools of steel and poison. Especially poison, because it seems like only poison pokemon can learn the majority of poison moves that are relevant.
Oh yeah, an entry hazard that’s ice specific should be looked into.
