Or, rather, becoming Mega really does nothing to help regular Steelix deal with any of its issues and it takes up your Mega spot. It’s like it should have gotten Water Absorb or anything, but almost anything would be better than Sand Force and not in a “this is people bitching about Slowbro-Mega having Shell Armor pre-release because it supposedly sucks and then bitching about it having Shell Armor post-release because it’s suddenly too good” way.
Not sure what ability it should have gotten though. It’s more just that its movepool is a bit barren still and being trapped by Magnezone (and Goth) isn’t fun when its Special Defense is only slightly above average post-transformation.
It’s a shame that it couldn’t have gotten in on Gamefreak giving out Magic Bounce like it was candy. Stupid Diancie.
I’d agree with Infernape if I was separating abilities, but I’m not, so the absurdity that is Speed Boost Blaziken gets counted with Blaze Blaziken. Otherwise, yeah, Infernape would definitely be better.
As for Empoleon, you’re probably correct now that I think about it. Only really benefit regular Blastoise has is not having to deal with as common weaknesses as Ground and Fighting while still being weak to Electric. Speaking of which, Blastoise also doesn’t have to deal with being trapped by Magnezone, who is still somewhat common due to both Ferrothorn and Skarmory being so popular and Magnezone generally pairing well with Beedrill-Mega.
Shrug. Empoleon definitely has more versatility though and an overall better typing in most instances arguably, as well as the better Hidden Ability (even if no one uses Defiant on it), so that probably would put it ahead. Regular Blastoise is hardly terrible though.
In fact, since Serperior has Contrary now, the only starter I’d say that is straight-out bad in a “you’ll only use if you like it” way is poor, poor Meganium.
P.S. I’d probably put regular Charizard above what I know of Emboar if Charizard wasn’t quadruply weak to Ubiquitous Rock. Poor Emboar is just kind of outclassed even with Blaziken as a whole banned to Ubers by Them.
shell armor sucks. mega slowbro has such a retarded physical defense and calm mind that it actually benefits from it. it’s literally the first pokemon to make good use out of shell armor. he would’ve been so much better with regenerator.

Catch a variety of Ralts with synchronize. It makes catching mons with good natures A LOT easier.
