Pink Gorilla: sessions every Saturday starting at 3PM, MvC2/ST/A3

i just had an interesting idea, tournament entry fee would be $1 or $2 but all the entry fees would get turned into quarters and used to pay for tournament matches. winner could collect whatever is left over (if there is any)

this would also work great if we did dan battles, the battle would just continue in rotation until all the money has run out. if someone ranks up they would get off the machine and go to the back of the rotation, unless they rank up out of the range of the current battle

i think either of these would be good because if you’re planning on playing at an arcade you can probably afford one dollar, and most of the time you’ll get your money’s worth of matches out of it anyways, everybody wins!

like i said i’m willing to organize all of this, but let me know if i’m crazy for thinking we can get a big enough turnout

i wonder if maybe maybe maybe we could get pink gorilla to sponsor some kind of prize or maybe a raffle that everyone who enters the tournament gets entered into, they would be getting good business from it after all

just thinking out loud, i only want to see an st scene alive again here!

I like the dan battles idea!

Sounds awesome…Just curious are people really that broke these days they cant have $5 worth to play for a session?

i just wish it wasnt almost 2hrs away from my place…

the cool thing about dan battles over ranbats is you don’t have to show up to every battle to maintain your rank, it’s a constantly active ranking that eventually evens out to a pretty accurate level of skills. so you could make the long trip up whenever it’s convenient (as convenient as a 2 hour drive can be lol) and you wouldn’t be left out

i think we might be better off starting with a regular tournament, at least until we can see what kind of turnout we can get. i can probably come up with some kind of incentive prizes to get people to show up, maybe my copy of ssf4? heheheh

seriously though, i’ll do whatever it takes to get people to come out. all you people who say you’re interested in st but never really got around to it, now is the time!!

edit: now that i think about, dan battles are probably more suited for less people than a standard tournament. you only really need five players to get a decent rotation going, and its designed in a way that you can’t really exploit it to rank up endlessly against the same people over and over. and you’re allowed to enter more than one character, which can at least double the number of “players” in the rotation. let me know what you guys think, i could go either way

I am also sick at home. Fuck winter time! Put in a little time with Ryu on the classic mode HDR. AI in that game is sooooooooooooo much tougher than SSF4 AI. I was stuck on ken for a long ass time. Also, does Guile have the same voice as the announcer? Anyway, having fun with it, going to put a couple more hours in training mode tonight. I have some poor execution habits left over from ssf4 that need ironing out and I need to work on some basic combos and fireball spacing.

Anyway lots to do before I’m just throwing quarters away lol. Until then if anyone wants to hit me up on psn (I’ll probably be trying to finish CoD:BO) and get some games in just send me an invite. Currently planning on Ryu because he is kinda the go to guy for beginners in most SF games. Maybe add Bison and Sagat later on.

Edit: Also I think the Dan system sounds interesting and fun. And I agree with Axel about it being lame to ditch out on PG.

I like all these ideas, especially the dan battles (I made a separate thread about it before, in fact).

I think we should make a list of everyone who is in or near Seattle who likes ST, and then pester them to come out… since I’m new I only know 5-6 people; there must be others??

I like ST. But I work on Saturdays.

Same

Sorry I wasn’t there this week, I had other stuff to do. But yeah, I’d be down for either tournaments or dan battles. I can ask about prizes or a raffle or something, if there’s interest and if this ever gets off the ground. We can also advertise on the PG Facebook page or website, which might help bring in newcomers not on SRK.

Do we want to switch to Sundays to make it easier for people to meet?

I went home last night and talked to my girlfriend about Marus’ idea for the dan/kyu ranking system, even though no we hadn’t talked about it at the arcade. Definitely a great system.

Axel is right about the difference between the arcade and a home setting. Arcade setting provides a constant open spot for people to come in, observe, be themselves, and learn to play (or not play) at their own convenience. It’s important to having growth.

Home settings are also limited. If 50 people start showing up to home settings weekly, they start to shutdown. If 50 people start to show up to the arcade regularly, the arcade prospers and expands.

My idea? I’m pretty sure Axel or Geo brought it up first, I just said I liked it :stuck_out_tongue:

Btw, next Saturday 20 November we’re having a special BEMANI day. Half price on all of the BEMANI games, plus Bobby is going to have some cool related prizes to raffle off! So if you’re into rhythm games you should check that out.

something to keep in mind if we decide to do sundays is the arcade closes at 7. if we did it on saturday we could start it a little later, i was thinking like 6:30 so people can park for free, also leaving a few hours earlier where people can play casuals.

of course we would want to accommodate as many people as possible though

i’m throwing together a quick little page that could hold the rankings and info about the next battle, etc

really excited about this! hopefully we can get a regular thing going

Axel, check out this thread also: http://shoryuken.com/f223/ggpo-st-danisen-ranking-battle-256357/

whipped this up real quick: Seattle ST Danisen Rank Battles @ Pink Gorilla Arcade
(yeah i shamelessly ripped the layout from here, dont tell anybody)

names/characters/date/time are all just placeholders on there, don’t worry if you want to play a different character or whatever

for rules here’s what i came up with:
-$1 entry per character, so with 8 entries the battle will last somewhere around 32 matches, which gives everyone plenty of opportunity to rank up if they are capable of it
-ranks will have four tiers: 1st/2nd/3rd, 4th/5th/6th, 7th/8th, 9th/10th. the first event will obviously only include the first tier, once people start ranking up we can see if we need to adjust anything. hopefully this will keep enough players in the rotations for each battle.
-you can’t go into negatives in rank 1, so if you lose a match you’ll stay at 0
-when you rank up you get off the machine, this is so someone can’t just run a train on the entire rotation and get 3 ranks instantly

i can’t decide whether to have ranks 1 and 2 in their own tier and stick 3/4/5 together instead, this would give new players an easier time ranking up, but might make for smaller battles at times. give me input!

remember you can enter as many characters as you want, so if someone ranks up out of range of everyone else they can just enter a new character and start from scratch again until people catch up

if this all sounds good to you guys i’ll make a new thread announcing the first official battle! before i do that, saturday or sunday?? what time??

That site is great!! Count me in, in, in, in.

If it’s between sat. And sun. I would prefer sat. I will most likely never make it out on sun since I work Sundays. At least I could make it out sometimes on sat. If my girl picks up a shift or something. But go with whatever works best for the majority of you guys since I’m admittedly pretty flaky lol.

Other than that things look awesome on the ranking chart. I’ll wait to see what day you guys go with before I throw my name in there.

Yo isn’t parking free ater 1 or 2pm at UW? The parking lot under oodegard library. It is a few blocks away but it beats the shit out of paying and the walk isn’t far at all.

that would be nice, paying out the ass for street parking isn’t very cool

i think i’m just going to hold the first battle on saturday since that’s when we’ve been having gatherings, hopefully later people can post up about availability and we can set the date accordingly.

i made a new thread, post in it if you’re coming to encourage others, lets get this show on the road!

Anyone going to the Assassin’s Creed launch party at PG today?
