3/5 for ultimate? probably not… random factor cut down, lot of ToDs basically removed, stronger zoning… something a lot of people overlook is that meter gain while getting hit was decreased by a lot as well - no more free supers for the rest of your team after your point char dies and gives you 2-3 bars from getting hit
I’m up for it as long as it doesn’t get boring for spectators. But if it results in the matches feeling like they drag out too much, and in the games taking too long, it might end up doing more harm than good. Maybe a smaller tournament should serve as “testing grounds” for this, and the result should point out whether or not it’s something worth looking into.
Anyway, I talked to Gonzo about this awhile ago, and if the tournament doesn’t have that many setups, time management goes out the window and 3/5 takes a LONG time. On top of that you can’t guarantee that all of the players in a given tournament will be good. 3/5 for top 8 sounds good to me, though.
I’m actually running mvc3 and soon umvc3 tourneys in wisconsin 3/5. I had problems with 2 out of 3 sets IN MVC3 so I took action and started running my own tournaments
whats wrong with making a set 3 out of 5 if it ensures the better player wins more often. umvc3 “may” be more fair, but I bet umvc3 still runs just as fast as mvc3.
I understand that making the game fair for the players should be the priority. But a lot of people underestimate the importance of the players who want to watch a good show at tournaments and have helped the community grow in doing so. Obviously, making sure the competitions are fair should be put above everything else, but keeping other factors on the back of our minds when discussing these things can’t hurt.
People just need to be aware of how long 3/5 matches take when discussing this, and how it can affect factors outside the players. It instantly becomes more difficult to organize a tournament when matches can take twice as long. It’s not that a 3/5 match takes a long time, it’s just that all of it ends up adding up. I do think it is a good idea, and I’m 100% sure it makes matches more fair. It’s just that there’s people that matter other than the two players facing off against each other, the organization of the tournament included.
Why stop there. If you really want to waste your time you can dig up the dozen or so locked threads from around the same time where someone is bitching about the damage and a ton of people (sometimes myself included, sometimes I didn’t beat the thread lock) explaining why it would be a stupid change.
What? Why? UMvC3 is still 1 round and you’re doing 2 out of 3 matches. It’s still less than every other game being played with best 2 out of 3 matches set to 3 rounds.
guys obviously we want the most skilled player to win every time
if you accept this as truth, then every tourney should be round robin, since every1 plays every1 and the true winner is the one who does well against everybody.
A game should be judged by its own standards, not the standards of games past. That’s why I’m willing to give 3/5 a fair shot.
@Honzo: A couple of questions. How much longer did the tournaments that did 3/5 last in comparison to the tournaments that did 2/3? Also, were you guys going through your matches as quickly as possible? Or were there possible delays?
Why do people praise ST for its high damage and unforgiving nature, but whine about not having allowances in Marvel 3? Hasn’t the mantra of the fighting game community always been “make less mistakes?”
3/5 makes sense to me, when I play often I do best out of 5 before leaving a match. actually I agree with what someone else said, maybe the elimination bouts will be 2/3 and the semi-finals and on will be 3/5
