Personal thoughts on Guys matchup ratio's

Like I’ve said from the start, the very first patch that was released for this game was a fix that remedied a fatal flaw that worked against Guy: he was the only character in the game that was able to be combo’d into a command grab. That right there says to the world, “Hi, my name is Capcom, and I totally underdeveloped this character.”

St.Strong isnt bad at all…look at the hitbox
http://i39.tinypic.com/15wdor9.png

and the move actually moves you forward so the range is actually more than what it seems…one thing that is sad is that st.strong->low houzanto cant combo :frowning: …and even on block i get jab spammed in between the combo sometimes… a little more hitstun on this move would be great…but am satisfied with this normal probably one of the normals that actually work right…

Yeah it used to be combo back in the alpha days but you had to be rather close and OS it pretty much, In IV only after a counter hit which is dreadful :, I request more block/hit stun on it. xd

Yea… I guess a few more active frame on some of his normals…TC more consistent and better walk speed and guy is all set …

some extra adjustments to houzanto(invinc or comboability or startup…etc) would proly put him in high tier

Man Guy players sure have come a long way…I remember in the old thread people wanted 20+things for guy to be buffed … “Guy U2 should have 0 frame startup” :expressionless:

Im still not seeing Guy vs Bison as 5/5. You base this matchup off of who can get the knockdown and corner pressure. But I can’t even get in on Bison. His pokes beat anything and whenever I try approaching him he can scissor kick out or slide or whatever. His runaway is too good. Once i block one SK its game over and Bison has way more ways to get in than guy does. Any jab he lands leads to a safe SK and can just dash in and beat whatever i throw out.

Maybe there is someone on PSN who can play this matchup with me and tell me wtf to do because im not seeing it. Oh and rose too. wtf do i do on her wakeup. i cant cross her up. even if i bait a reversal its pretty safe on block and she just zones guy out so well.

i think either 1) youre playing theory fighter or 2) youre playing the best bison on the planet.

you can OS his teleport to prevent him from getting away.

why do you have problems with Rose’s wakeup ? all she can do is EX drill which is punishable on block with bushin chain, if she doesnt have U2 stocked. If she does has U2 stocked, just bait it out with fadc backwards on her wakeup. also remember that you can MK tatsu through her orbs and hit her if shes approaching. most of the time they will fireball fadc so they can approach with their fireball mk tatsu will go through all of this. alternatively, if she jumps in on you, you can EX tatsu for free. the hardest aspect of playing against rose is her cr.mp. its incredibly fast and its incredibly safe on block. learn her counter hit setups and learn how to avoid them. i did a write up on her in the matchup guide

Any chance of updating the matchup chart? It’s pretty out of date.

In case you don’t go through the rest of the SSFIV forums much, Acku is putting together a community tier list. Here’s his post in the Abel section. He hasn’t dropped by our section yet, but I think it would be interesting to see what everyone thinks about Guy’s match ups now.

Personally, I don’t have numbers for all of Guy’s match ups mainly because there are some characters that constantly give me trouble (Dhalsim, Juri, M. Bison) or I don’t know enough about (Gen, Gouken, Ibuki). And, even if I did have numbers for all of Guy’s match ups, I’m sure people would disagree with some.

Lol, I disagree with pretty much all your matchups. Not kidding when I say practically each and every one, but I don’t think Super is worth butting heads over anymore.

That’s your opinion as well as this is my own, most of these I just give Even cause i have no opinion it.

I hardly fight Seth, Sim, Blanka , Gen,

I fight a Ryu player daily as well as a Bison player.

Ryu player has experience into Makoto, T Hawk and Fuerte.

Bison player, plays Ken, Juri, and Adon.

I’ve had constant bouts with most of the matches I said that have favours as well as Cammy, Blanka, Chun, Abel, Zangief and Sakura.

And have had a fair share of losses or wins with the rest.

Most of my games go either way.

I think the best out of 10 rating system is flawed - most of the time people are inclined to put 5-5 signifying a “fair fight.” Fact is for most of the cast, especially for shotos like sagat, they have better properties all around, than Guy does. When you judge a fight by the properties of the characters alone, then you can say this is somewhat a tier list.

Take a character like Ryu, he has frame advantage in every sense. He is probably 7 times (rough guess) more likely to successfully execute his ultra in a round than Guy is. Speed advantage all around. Safe reversal option (with meter) in close quarter situations. If you look at it from this perspective, this fight can only come close to a 5-5 at the beginning, when Ryu has no meter or ultra. After that, I don’t see how this match up, or others like it are 5-5.

People only seem to put 5-5 because of how they’ve done against that opponent. Most Ryu’s I play don’t know how to fight Guy. So what if I have a positive success rate against Ryu’s online? I’m not gonna say it’s 5-5 just because the player behind the character makes the match 5-5.

In my matches against my friend who plays Ryu, He learned the Guy match up, before I used to be a demolition derby to him., now it goes back and forth, same with the Bison player it went back and forth in the beginning but, now its mostly, he’ll win more often than I do most of the time. Everyone else its a hit or miss.

Just as an example I place Ryu-Guy as 7-3 having played Daigo.

To give you perspective, I beat 95% of online Ryus but I know better than to call the match 5 - 5. Cr.mk alone makes that match suck. A decent Ryu can win it by doing nothing but cr.mk xx hado/ex hado and baiting Guy’s attempts at trying to hit the hadoken.

Sim kills Guy’s approach game with cr.hp. It decimates elbow from far and slides/db mp beat it from below. Guy has a horrible time getting in.

Contrary to what people were saying early, Guy also loses badly to Guile imo.

Then there are the obvious horrendous ones like Honda, Rose and Rog which I’d put at 7 - 3. Cr.mk can only do so much, but it will not save you against a decent opponent.

Guy does not beat Hakan 7 - 3. Play a decent Hakan and you’ll see it’s 6 - 4 tops.

Conversely I don’t think Deejay beats Guy at all.

Guy has few even matchups let alone advantageous ones, please stop trying to tell people otherwise.

Anyway, I’ll digress for now. We obviously won’t see eye to eye on this.

7-3 matchups imo are Honda,Balrog and Ryu.

6-4 are Rose,Cody,Guile,Bison,Sagat,Akuma and Abel.

Rest are 5-5.Guy doesnt have any advantage matchups.Imo Guy is so lacking in a lot of areas he is entirely a mindgames character that can land big damage of a right guess or two.The thing is mindgames dont count for shit on a matchup chart which is why I dont disagree with people who say he has tons of bad matchups.

I dont agree to the ryu matchup being 7-3

I find this is the match where the better player will always win and not because of character specific traits. Fundamentals play a huge role in this match.

5-5 or 4.5-5.5 for Ryu

Cr.mk goes under everything guy has.Its a complete guessing game as to how to get around Ryu’s fireballs because mp hozanto can only be used pre-emptively and not on reaction, its a guess basically(this is why EX hozanto not being able to breeze through fireballs is so annoying).Trying to d+mp elbow over the fireballs at most ranges gets you an uppercut to the foot or occasionally a trade.Ryu can also just cr.mk under your elbow and then do a combo to punish your elbow recovery.

Cross cut/auto correct uppercuts beat every single cross up setup guy has.Your only choice is to empty jump against him.Otherwise the crossup mk will get beat or will trade with Ryu’s mp srk.He can also get Ultra 1 off of that trade occasionally.

If you think Ryu is 5-5 then the Ryu’s you’re playing probably dont know the matchup.

umm yes you can do mp hozanto on reaction and anticipation. So you guys are saying the akuma match up and the ken matchup should be heavily in their favor as well?
But I see people posting 7-3 Ryu and 5-5 Akuma when he has the same tools and more things that guy struggles against (save ex fireball and ken’s crap fireball). personally I find Akuma harder to deal with.

you do know that guy can win without gimmicks and jump ins right? St.mk beats Ryu’s cr.mk 100% of the time. it is also not that to whiff punish with slide. Guy has a great ‘fake’ safe jump setup after run slide that I think you need to learn. Learn to elbow drop outside of his cr.mk range and sweep on reaction. Just because Ryu can beat most of your tools, doesn’t mean you should stop doing them. Mix it up and throw some out during your pressure strings.

I think I might know the matchup a little more if thats all you’re losing to.

Mp hozanto is unsafe as hell against shotos and you need to be pretty psychic to land it compared to what they should doing on their end. Frankly they don’t even need to be using fireballs to kill Guy to begin with.

This “fake” safejump you’re talking about is empty neutral jump after run slide, right? Why the hell would I want to be right next Ryu? It’s not exactly an advantageous situation either and you’re at frame disadvantage as well. If you’re playing a smart Ryu, he’ll know you can’t safejump him so there is absolutely no ifs on his end. You need U2 to make that crap even the least bit threatening. Tell me more amazing tips please, yeesh.

I think all shotos are terrible matchups (Ken being the lesser threat). And Ryu can easily mix it up with cr.mp or just plain hadoken if you’re spamming that amazing st.mk (which doesn’t actually lead to anything, unlike Ryu’s cr.mk). Don’t be so dismissive of other players.

If anything, I think it’s the Ryu players in your region that don’t seem to know that match for shit if you’re that confident.

Tsukimiya himself has called the match impossible.

I’m curious onto why you say Cody beats Guy, cause I don’t see it, I know Cody can frame trap like a fiend cause I side him but… I don’t think he beats Guy.

Also remember Duck we all have different experiences with who we play against,
