Cody matchup is 6-4 from my personal experience playing against probably the best cody in Europe/UK.I wouldnt say its a terrible 6-4 matchup,it is very winnable.I would probably say 5.5 but again I really dont like using .5’s.
Cody is 6-4 because Cody’s ground game annihilates Guy’s.His pokes are great and at least two of them can be option selected into EX Ruffian kick.f+mp beats most of guys pokes and can be confirmed into cr.lk xx mk ruffian for a knockdown. Cody creates mindgames with bad stone that can be hard to get around as mp hozanto is not invincible to it like other projectiles.Guys floaty jump gives Cody plenty of time to apply the correct anti air if you succesfully make it over bad stones.EX run slide can be baited with fake bad stone aswell.A character like Guy deals big damage, but Cody does way more and has good pokes and anti air to boot.
I would say the match is your favour when you get him in the corner though, seeing as he has no good wakeup in that situation.
umm you do know that you can press mk during that fake safe jump right? it puts Ryu into a guessing game with rewards in your favor. I might have given you too much credit if you were so quick to dismiss that option.
“st.mk doesn’t lead into anything” are you kidding me? first off damage is damage, I’d like to see somebody there and keep taking those hits. Second of all, it stops him from doing it so you can actually walk in a bit closer and use st.mp and cr.lk. so what if he mixes up with cr.mp and hadouken. Learn to adapt instead of throwing away that strategy and giving up.
Daigo himself said Tsukimiya isn’t the best guy player hes fought. If he says Guy was top tier would you believe him?
How is the reward in this fake safejump setup in your favor? Assuming you’ve trained the Ryu player enough to recognize the situation, he’ll know it’s at best a 50/50 (not really) and at worse completely in his favor if he has meter. That alone should make you think twice about ever sticking something out. So you’ll try to attack once maybe every 5 attempts if you’re smart? How often are you even going to get in that close? That leaves the other 80% of the time where you do the empty jump, you’re at -2, so he can throw out cr.mk which will beat anything you try short of U2. Cr.mp will also beat anything short of ex tatsu or U2 and let’s not forget he has a 3 frame jab, you don’t.
Stand mk alone will not win the match. It’s 70 damage and slow as hell. You need to close the gap enventually to do any damage (and at the same time you don’t want to get too close because he’s flat out better than youpoint blank, is it getting clearer why this match blows?). Guy might get a hit here and there, but Ryu can also resort to spamming cr.mp (which is an option select into hp hadoken) to stuff your st.mk clean at the range where it beats his cr.mk. Over time, even if you’re just taking chip, the odds are not in your favor(not to mention the match gets really dumb).
Sorry for assuming you were a Kiryu fanboy, 90% of the people on here are so I just assumed the name alone would carry some weight, lol. Personally I think Otaku is much much better, but it doesn’t change the fact that this match sucks ass for Guy.
That goes double for the Akuma match. Ken not so much because his 3 frame dp is not as reliable.
First of all, Guy beats Ryu in fondamentals alone… st.MK beats his best poke (but ofcourse he can bait it and whiff-punish it if you’re overusing it) and with MP Hozanto it’s pretty easy to punish FBs on reaction. Those two things alone don’t make this a bad matchup. And even if they block a MP hozanto, it will be safe if you spaced it well (only shinku will punish it).
You can sucessfully mixup Ryu on wakeup with jumps. It goes like this:
If he’ll try to beat both your your elbow and j.MK with autocorrect (by buffering d/f,d/f till the last moment and then press MP to srk), he’ll always eat the elbow because the game will count him as ‘standing’ on wakeup, causing him to make contact with the elbow earlier than he’d want to. I hope you understand what I’m saying. Of course, if you’re really afraid of that srk you can always empty jump and bait it (into c.lk OSing by pressing c.lk+lp). Throw in some uncrouchable flips (spaced well too)and you have quite some options. The guessing game is highly in your favour.
Also, due to how the game works, it’s almost impossible to autocorrect crossups in corner (as long as it wasn’t perfect safejump). Guy must take full advantage of that.
Damn, I’m tired. Hope all this writing wasn’t for nothing. :\
Well I know I’m gonna try and approach the matchup with those things in mind next time I play a good offline Ryu.I think thats pretty productive, any form of debate is really even if its just someone playing devils advocate with opinions.
He is not at -2 agaisnt shotos. try doing it against ken’s super. hes probably at -1 and if he were at -2, I’m pretty sure not everybody can do cr.jab or cr.mk at reversal timing 100% of the time. or better yet, do the empty jump and throw as you land. Try doing a crouch jab or short with Ryu.
do you think a ryu will always risk eating a bushin chain or st.hk bushin chain for doing a shoryuken? at most guy will eat a shoryuken (with no meter) the risk reward is certainly in guy’s favor. if ryu does nothing guy can get a free pressure string frame trap set up. if both do nothing, it usually ends in a throw tech.
if Ryu has 2 bars and guy has U2, he has a chance to bait ryu to using 2 stocks plus eating a U2.
the best thing you want is ryu to start spamming cr.mp, guy can start his pressure strings at that range. all Guy needs is 1 short to get a knock down. and it is easily hit confimable with st.mp into slide
I agree the match can get annoying but it is not 7-3 by all means
also 4 standing mk = a jump in fierce plus bushin chain.
