The “mountain nonsense”…does that even deserve a response? That may have been the usage for it 17/18th century, but obviously its not now. The census bureau certainly uses the term as such. You should take it up with them.

My thing is your example would be like me getting offended for someone calling me black and making it equivalent to being compared to a slave or some other older term. Caucasian is probably not “correct” and its too broad a term (I did some googling) but the current usage is the equivalent. No-one would use the term nowadays to refer to “mountain men”. I still think its a bit better than using different tones to refer to races.
And out of curiosity, what WOULD you call yourself?

I have never had anybody address me as Caucasian. I think I would laugh if anybody did. It’s ridiculous.
