It might be a cultural thing. In international development you deal with a metric ton of Africans since that’s where a lot of the aid goes to. Don’t make a mistake of calling them black, they will get extremely offended and will explain that they are African. If you call them black they assume you mean African American which they take as a pretty large insult.
yeah, but for a kid to say that to another…it was probably one of the most hurtful things i ever faced at that age. sadly it only got worse as i got older in my hood.
You shouldnt forget that the Brazilian conception of race is way different than ours. Two parents can have a child who shares neither of their races in Brazil, at least according to their census.
I don’t fully remember the specifics but i can dig up the textbook i read this in if someone wants it
And also African American should always be the preferred description for any self-respecting black person, as opposed to just “black”. Just as “Caucasian” is far more respectful and correct as opposed to “white”. Not even debatable.
apparently not, i guess the concept of quadroons and octoroons is out of the question.
it’s not unusual. brazil never had a civil rights movement. africians were simply freed after slavery was abolished and were left without education, political, or economic power even though they had the largest population of africans outside of africa. the brazilians i’ve met think bring up the civil rights movement to argue that america is racist. ironically, they believe brazil to be color blind. of course, nothing is ever that simple.
lol…typical, like i said, nothing is ever that simple.
Deep down, all our likes of the other gender are just evolution ques that our body wants because we subconsciously want our offspring to be strong and healthy.
You like big hips? It’s because that big hipped woman will bear children easier. Big boobies means more milk for those childrens to eat.
You must have been. Its the only way to explain that ridiculous question you posed.
“So since its more correct and acceptable to refer to them as African American, does that mean we should call Africans that too”? Excuse me? I know what you were trying to do and I refuse to be baited by it.
I’ll say that I don’t refer “Black” racist or anything (I use it mostly because its quicker to say/type than African American). But really, when you get down to it, its an hand-me-down from the older, more vulgar terms to differentiate those of darker skin and those that did not. When’s the last time you heard a Hispanic called “Tan”? Or an Asian “yellow”?
Didnt read the thread but yea, if you look black…well then, youre gonna be considered black. Its that simple. So im with Halle on this one. I mean, im mixed…but i look black and i dont get offended when people classify me as black. If you want to say youre mixed or whatever…thats cool too but, unless you look like youre mixed…people arent going to classify as such, and going out of your way to correct someone is a douche move anyway imo.
