People pissed at Halle Berry for considering her daughter to be black

In the past she would be considered not multiracial, not biracial but just black when laws were more discriminative. The idea of race in itself is laughable but that’s our world. I respect what she is implying but her intentions are in vain.

And it’s sad too. I think that is what’s causing all the confusion and “the butt-hurt” over her comment.

I swear, if you’re a celeb, you might as well be a mute because everything you say can be flipped and bounce all over the place.

T’is sad.

Another example of “give your kids North American names” and they won’t hate you.

lol halle balle. But seriously, I kinda guess at mixes when I see em. If I see a light skinned black girl, I dont immediately think “oh she’s half white”. At least not all the time. I’ve met a few people who are half black half indian, or all kinds of crazy mixes (I’ve dated two girls who were half german half phillipino, and one looked white the other looked asian). I dont understand why u seem to think white people all seem to think alike. Get over myself? I have never thought of myself as superior due to my colour, not even once.

Halle Barry apparently has no problem scraping the bottom of the Jim Crow barrel. I’m shocked people have never heard of the “one drop rule” before. But I’m more shocked Halle Barry used the “one drop rule” as her reasoning. lol

I don’t think people are really denying Halle is or looks black. And nobody is denying her right to declare her daughter black… but there are better ways to go about it than the “one drop rule”.

Regardless of my comment about the “jim crow barrel”, I feel the topic was blown out of proportion and isn’t really that big of a deal. But big deal or not, I still feel like the one drop rule is a sad line of reasoning.

Jive Out!

my sister used to look like her daughter but with more of a fro. apparently my sister kinda denies she’s black, especially when she was younger. i dunno how the hell you deny your black so i can understand halle trying to fight that her daughters black.

is your sister black (both parents are black) or not?

both her parents are black…but i guess somewhere on my moms side we have some white. cause all the females on my moms side are light skinned as hell. also the fact she has both black parents adds to the oddness of her denying her blackness.

You can’t depart from your instincts , our genes are rewritable programs, that’s all. Even your “choices” are based on seemingly benign imperatives created since conception. Sure we develop “personalities” based on external environmental stimuli, but to think humanity’s decision making can be completely rational is wholly unrealistic.

There is a reason why a 4’9 woman would want a 6’2 spouse, evolutionary speaking. She might not say, “I only will date tall men”, but her inner biology will draw her to this genetic conclusion simply as a survival measure. Superficiality isn’t learned, it’s in us for a good reason, regardless of how we try to make it seem like a solely cultural construct.

Is it fair? No, but the animal kingdom which we try so hard to depart from is within us; every day is a constant struggle between our prefrontal cortex and our amygdala. The primal need for gratification is mitigated by our intelligence, which we can use to achieve those ends in more elaborate and manipulative ways.

oh ok that one drop rule. i heard about it in my college history class. surprised it’s being used here.

also i know black people who refused to be called african american rather just american or black.

Not to be funny, but it reminds me of Ruckus and his mother.

I have heard of the one drop rule, in fact it was mentioned in the musical showboat as a reason that a couple should break up, because interracial unions were forbidden because of the one drop rule. It seems odd to me that someone of black heritage would want to use a law that was used to oppress her people in the past and apply it to her daughter. If anything, she should be setting a better standard for her daughter, since she’s probably not a big fan of the other Jim Crow laws.

It seems to me that people who are black/white mixes have to choose one or the other, but no one seems nearly as concerned what other mixed race individuals consider themselves.

Not really. They just make up some shit they think sounds african, as a way to supposedly stay true to their roots, about which they actually know very little aside from what they saw on tv. It’s a ghetto thing.

its interesting when you got african decended people like brazilians who deny they have black in them. i remember when i was thirteen and the brazilian girl at the end of my block when i was a kid told me this exact phrase “i dont have any ****** in me.” that shocked me…we had always been cool…she had never said anything like that. but members of her fam were as dark as me, so i didnt get why she would say such a thing.

lol a lil bit…shes def never date one black guy as long as i knew her.

She’s just mad that she let that handsome white man charm her and now Jesse Jackson won’t invite her to his baller all black everything parties.

Also people are extra dumb about their race and will always be. Everyone wants to be special. Just go look at all the dumb “Kiss me I’m BLANK” shirts out their for white people who are bored.

I’m pretty sure they aren’t of african/negroid descent. If your only qualification for “black” is brown skin…well…I don’t know what to tell you. Stop using anime classifications (every character with darker skin than the hero/main character is considered black) in real life. It never works.

(why do I get this funny feeling I’m gonna get fucked for just BEING in this thread?)

the way peope look at colour and completely overlook genetics is a joke, its like a bunch of kids arguing about the packaging of a product.

and if it’s a social issue then what should be discussed is the poor quality of the world’s perception, it’s 2011 for fuck sake

well some brazi’s arent of african decent. some are japanese some are portugal, but she was as dark as me soooo obviously we know where her descendants are.

I’ve always wondered how hard life must have been for Trunks. I mean, talk about race issues. On the one hand, being half human, he just wants to be a normal kid who does kid shit such as play hide and seek and tag. However, being half Saiyan as well, not to mention the son of a Saiyan prince at that, he would always have to constantly seek the approval of his father.

So instead of going to the zoo, it’d be training in 100x gravity instead. He must have struggled a lot figuring out who he was, and which half he identified with more.

i agree that her bringing up the one drop rule was somewhat random, but it doesn’t change the fact that her basic statement and point is pretty innocuous, yet people are acting as if she’s a black israelite hating on poor whitey.

but going back to the one drop rule comment, yeah it’s a remnant of “a darker time” but so is the majority of black vernacular (if she would have mentioned the paper bag test i’d have raised an eyebrow though). if some black actor started directing and mentioned in jet that he “likes being the HNIC on set” is there a problem? the fact that the media is parsing the language from an interview with ebony is much sadder to me.

i’m one of those people, depending on the circumstances.
