Oh boy, a race thread on SRK. Prepare for mass, acceptable (here, anyway) racism and then an inevitable shitstorm followed by a thread lock. Ready? Go!
interesting…
on a related note, another determining factor is how tall you are. the majority of CEOs are tall, very few are short. and so on. being taller corresponds to higher salaries.
Please - don’t mind me.
I just love taking every opportunity to riff Bernie Mac, and “Black Irish”.
R.I.P. B. Mac.
As I see it.
^ Are you serious? Fuck being 175cm then
I agree the Unreal, if you look black, you’re going to be labeled as black. Nahla looks black (imo). I don’t get why it’s a big deal that Halle Berry identifies her daughter as black.
nothing halle said in that article is outrageous at all, she considers her child black (as the world will) but it’s ultimately up to the child on how she’ll identify (as halle said). personally, i’m inclined to agree with unreal though, if you look black you are black. every black (not african) person in america has mixed heritage whether it be native american or white, so i’m not sure what the big deal is.
What does beng 5’9 have to do with “race”?
If that were the case, Shaq would be running a fortune 500, and not up and down the court.
As I see it.
i think i read somewhere that this is less external and more internal; short guys tend to be more conscious of their shortness and less likely to be aggressive and ambitious. it ties in to their self perception and their confidence, which affects their success far more than uncontrollable externalities like height or good looks.
napoleon wasn’t tall (nor was he unusually short, despite the common misconception). plenty of brilliant military leaders have been below average height and didn’t “look” the part. (rommel was short and described as looking like a schoolteacher)
the point is, yes this is definitely a factor, but its importance tends to be exaggerated, and short guys shouldn’t use it as an excuse for failure. imo.
I was replying to fishjie’s post, but you posted in the middle of my edit.
Being a half and half myself(korean and white) I could never really do the one drop rule because my entire life, everyone I came across with had a different impression of what they thought I was. One day a guy asked if I’m asian and the next day, a girl was completely surprised when I told her I was half asian. It sucks filling out those information boxes that has the few races. Where’s “mixed”?
I know, lol.
But height takes a back seat to melanin, when it comes to making it to CEO level, is what I was saying.
As I see it.
yeah, the number one thing in a company for executive success is looking, sounding, and acting like your superiors; whatever race/sex/culture they are, better to be the same.
some harvard business school profs did a study on how effective sucking up was in a business environment. they expected it to be a factor, but they were amazed at just how blatantly it could help your career. it was a depressing read since i despise brown nosers.
My disgust was more at the fact that I do tend to see taller people getting more respect now that I had thought about it.
Height means more than some people think.
Sad, isn’t it?
I totally agree with you on the ass-kisser issue.
It also plays into the mating game, big time.
Sadly.
As I see it.
it’s human nature, nothing to get disgusted by. ugly girls get way less respect than hot ones, short guys get less respect than tall guys.
you can let it define you or you can move on. at 5’9 you really shouldn’t feel that short. that’s average for the US.
Same here. You have to look deep into my family tree to find members with those ridiculous ‘names’.
What information box do you fill out that has races?
Also for the naming topic… If you live in North America, please give your kid a normal north american name, it really makes the kids life easier. Middle easterners are notorious for that. I think I have met one or 2 brown dudes in my life that have North american names and were born here.
And I know this one idiot that gave his kid, that was born in Canada, a polish name … Szczepan.
Good luck kid.
Hell, even after I immigrated to Canada, my parents changed my name and it made my life easier.
Anybody who subscribes to the “one-drop” rule is a fucking idiot and fails science forever.
Especially sad to see people in modern times EMBRACE it, when it was simply meant to deprive mixed race children of civil rights for decades.
Also interesting how Halle says “I’m not going to put a label on my child–but she’s basically black”.
Even more interesting in the comments section to see how non-Americans react to a story like this. I agree with the general sentiment–fuck being dominated by racial identity and stop seeing the world in black and white only–but it’s disturbing how little Europeans seem to understand the cultural background behind something like this.
But yeah, I wonder how people would respond to some white woman celebrity in the same case: “First thing I want to say is that I’m very connected to my community and I want white people to know that I haven’t abandoned them because I’ve had a child with a man outside of my race and I’m dating someone now outside of my race who is Cuban and Dominican”
Yeah, Halle is dumb, but if the rumor is true and her shitbag ex really did call her the n-word, she’s definitely the lesser of two evils here.
Well human nature is pretty disgusting in many ways. I don’t see how just because its natural, means its defensive-able.
Humans also tend to dislike/hate or even destroy things they don’t understand or don’t accept. But that’s just human nature. No biggie, amirite?
Can’t be serious
