I have a Pelican Real Arcade Stick for the PS2 and I was hoping to mod it so it can be of use for me to play SFIV for the PS3. I was just wondering how I should get started on this, or possibly simply confirming what I should purchase.
Though SEVERAL years old by now, I hear it’s a pretty good stick to mod because of its size and build. (Pic of the universal version below)
I’m understanding that HAPP sticks and buttons are what I should be gunning for, correct? Would it be possible to link to the appropriate items from http://www.lizardlick.com? Any help is greatly appreciated.
I love my modded Real Arcade, thanks for bringing up this topic. Fact is, this was one of my first mods and to this day is works like a charm. I modded my stick with Happ parts of course because well…it’s what I wanted at the time and I grew up on North American arcades here in Toronto.
Stick:
I used the Happ Competition Joystick http://www.happcontrols.com/joysticks/competition_joy.htm …lizard also sells this stick but my link is from happs official site. If you’re in Toronto you can get Happ parts directly from a dealer here. Save you the cost, anyway…
That’s really all you need man. Open the sucker up from the bottom, the screws are under the foam pads btw. Oh ya, any good old PS2 to PS3 adapter will work. I bought one from EB that was used for Guitar Hero peripherals. Works like a charm with no lag input what so ever.
PS: Don’t worry about the mod…it’s very simple, you can’t mess it up. I’ll try to link you a few pics from back in the day if I could find some in this thread
Thanks for the info! Where would probably be the cheapest place to buy the items you’ve linked to? Lizardlick has the joystick you linked to for around $9… I think. Not sure which buttons are which on their website.
What would you recommend for the joystick? The Happ or the IL? I guess I would prefer the convex buttons and it’s probably unnecessary to replace the start/select buttons right? I was just googling around and kind of noticed that there’s a bit of debate on the current quality of the happ competitions joysticks. Not sure what I should go for.
Most people on here will tell you to get the iL stick. It’s what Happ sold before they started making their own sticks, which are apparently inferior quality. On another thread there was a person with both who said he couldn’t tell a significant difference. I am a sheeple when it comes to following those more experienced than myself so I went iL.
Like the guy above I like concave buttons. It’s also what the SF cabinets had. There’s a leaning toward convex because of a Japanese bias around here. Either are fine.
I wouldn’t worry about replacing the Start/Select unless you are having issues with them. If they’re the same size as the other buttons then you could use those cool 1P/2P start buttons.
Sounds like the iL is a safe bet. Now I have to decide what color buttons to get for the thing (I’m pretty sure I would like convex). Black would blend in too much, blue would clash the start/select buttons, and anything else would look tacky. Haha.
If anyone feels like giving some artistic input, here’s the color scheme of my PS2 stick
I would get white buttons for that, but I’m pretty damn bland. If you’re feeling obsessive try loading it into Photoshop (Paint.NET, etc.) and play around with it. Some people here like to get fruity with their color schemes.
I was considering white or yellow simply because those are the colors the printing on the shell have. Just going to have to decide on one of the two I guess. It’s too bad they don’t make clear convex pushbuttons otherwise I would have decided already.
Just to add, instead of the 4 bumpy screws that hold the stick, I replaced them with flat head screws so I don’t get any rubbing against the side of my hand while holding the stick while resting my wrist.
PS: Button color, I would go with Blue or just all black
Great tip, I’m sure that over time that would bug me. I really never used this stick because I felt it was lackluster, but kept it in the event that I would like to turn it into a better stick. I’ve basically narrowed it down to white or black buttons. Black might not be too bad overall.
That is an excellent idea. Would you happen to know what type of screws you used to mount your joystick?
Like the OP, I have two of those Pelican joysticks, only its the universal ones, and I’m looking to go get me some parts to mod them.
And I think I’m going with a black joystick and two each of red, white, blue, and black buttons. I’m an old school gamer, so I remember my SF cabinet colors. :wgrin:
If you’re feeling ambitious at all, a can or two of plastikote or a similar plastic-specific paint works quite well on the case. I redid one of these for a friend, and it’s held up quite well. I painted the casing white, and then went with a red joystick, and ordered six red and a handful of white buttons. I swapped the housings around to end up with six buttons that were red with a white plunger for the normal kicks/punches, and solid white buttons for all of the others.
I don’t think I’m feeling ambitious enough to paint the thing, but it’s a very nice idea to keep in mind if I ever feel like masking teh scuffs on the shell. I’m fairly certain I’m ordering black convex and the iL stick. I’m actually quite fond of plain/simple color schemes. Tt would be rather nice to know what flathead screws would be flush however.
Are you sure that this stick will work with your PS3?
I have the universal version of the stick, with the real adapter, and it doesn’t work at all (my SFAC stick works just fine though).
I’m not sure, but it may be due to the digital-analog button on the universal stick, that doesn’t appear to be present on the ps2 stick. But definitely check, my modded Universal stick is languishing at present, and unusable.
Slightly off-topic, but has anyone had any luck getting the universtal pelican real arcade working on a ps3 via adapter?
Yes, I have used it several times to play MVC2. I originally got the Universal stick to use on my PC but it wouldn’t work with the ps2->usb adapter. Fortunately, they had the PS2 stick which did. And I kept it for a few years and tried it again on my PS3 with great success (using the same adapter I might add).
that’s good. looks like i’m pretty much out of luck though
I did do the happ modding thing, and it’s pretty easy, so don’t worry too much about that.
And I would recommend considering red/white/blue buttons for the stick, as that’s how the streetfighter arcade cabinets around here were set up back in the day, and I think it looks pretty cool. (red for jab/s kick, white for strong punch/med kick, blue for fierce punch/roundhouse kick).
Well, I just ordered a black iL stick and 8 black buttons. Not really going for eye-pleasing all things considered. If it’s functional I’ll be happy until I finally get a TE stick at my doorstep.
