Even after thinking about it for a good honest day, I’m still not in favor of the speed increase.
If this game was 1v1, I would be “AW YEAH, SPEED INCREASE, LET’S GO”, but I think that when you put multiple characters on the screen, things just feel faster already (my opinion, STRESSING THIS).
I’m trying to picture GG with assists, and all I can think of is KOF 2001.
And while I like KOF, I’m am truly happy with the speed in SG.
Not exactly in response to your peacock example. If your peacock was standing still in the corner(don’t know why since you need to keep her moving once she is getting pursued/pressure) and not shooting for example and valentine were simply to ground run you then the Post-patch it would cover more ground faster. However the difference in speed/frame data ratio is still the same so in a sense it is Aesthetics. Since Peacock in turn would be a bit faster (speed difference/frame priority between val will remain the same regardless of patch) and cover the amount of ground to escape valentine pressure. Think of it as if a videotape just increasing the speed the progress of a movie very slightly.
Then it does affect gameplay (sometimes). If I’m Peacock, in the corner, I’m just throwing shit out trying to chip you, and when you get close to me, I’m planning to teleport, I have to teleport sooner than I would have before the patch, which I don’t like. Is this going to effect the timing of any of my combos or inputs? Because if it does, it’s not really true to say it’s solely aesthetic. Would this make characters with air dashes like Valentine theoretically even more mobile then before? Wouldn’t this make it harder for a player to react to valentine IAD to Air Heavy Punch cross up or not?
Aesthetically speaking, I like the pace of SG, it’s perfect for playing and watching those awesome animations.
I voted no, but maybe I can change my word if I see the differences.
I’d just like to note its not purely aesthetic. A faster game means faster reactions are required. In addition, it means combo timing is more strict (the real-time window to hit links shrinks). In terms of game balance, nothing changes, but the “style” of the game is affected. Mix-ups are now a bit harder to block (the window to switch your guard, in real time is smaller). Resets are now easier to perform (hit-stun wears off in real time quicker, and throws start up in real time quicker, so you’ll find yourself accidentally throwing while the opponent is in hit-stun less). The game balance is completely unaffected but the way the game plays is.
Of course… its only by 3% so I still don’t care much.
…
So I guess it’s not purely aesthetic, bur rather mostly aesthetic. You know… aesthetic for any purpose that actually matters, or at least for anyone who already has a basic grasp of the game. So yeah… aesthetic.
Right now I vote no, but I’d have to see it and feel it. 3% doesn’t sound like a lot and I wouldn’t be against it so much that I stop playing, but I’m happy with the pace of the game right now.
I greatly appreciate your explanations Mike, I still voted no now that I’m home though, on the basis that I very much like the game exactly how it feels now and the only changes I could have asked for are already queued up per the patch notes.
If this stuff is all true, then Mike shouldn’t be saying it’s solely aesthetic, and frankly, if combo timing becomes more strict, then I’m against this. Is this stuff all true?
i really dont have an issue with the speed atm, but i guess we probs wouldnt even notice it after a day of playing the new patched version.
it would leave me with concerns that someone else brought up though, that it could open the floodgates of “its still not fast enough” or “the more like X game it is, the better”.
i defo would like to see some side by side speed comparisons and stuff as well though.
Yes. But if you think about it this way, Ceracopter spinning faster will mean it will end faster. :3
I come from a Guilty Gear/Marvel 3 background, so I don’t mind it if there’s more chaos on screen. tbh I think some players don’t have experience in seeing multiple things at once, so they get overwhelmed. Gotta take those lumps!
You see slightly less of what is occurring onscreen in the same timeframe, so things appear faster. However, this does mean you have (slightly) less of a visual window to recognize/react to things.
Since SG already skips frames (I remember before release the speed was increased) and doing so will not affect frame data in the least bit and thus will not affect gameplay, I vote yes.
