Painting the Fightstick (With Krylon or Vinyl Dye)

Thanks, that’s exactly what I wanted to hear.

Sorry to double post, but I’m having the same issue with VHT Satin Black on my TE sides. I prepped them by washing with warm, soapy water, then wiped them with an ammonia based cleaner and then let them to dry. I sprayed two light coats then one medium wet coat as instructed on the can with 10 minute drying intervals between coats. I let the paint dry over about two days and last night I took the finished stick to a session, where it was lightly used and such. I brought it back home to discover slight chips at the corners and edges, maybe 3 in total, and they chip down to show white. I wasn’t even scraping it with a knife or anything – I suspect this is just from placing the stick down on a tabletop that it caused these chips.

I don’t really know what else I can do at this point… but I just wanted to report it anyway.

Its just like that even if you do the best prep in the world. I personally only spray the same color on my case just cuz a visible chip would irritate me to no end. Next time, do a more aggressive prep including scuffing and cleaning with denatured alcohol and using adhesion promoter. Ill show you something I recently did when I get a chance.

At this point, I’d say it’s probably best to just use a regular priming, painting, and clear coating method instead of people trying the dye method. Looks like dyes are having the same problems as the regular paints, maybe slightly better without a clear coat. Well, this way, people get to have many more options for colors and such, and clear coats come in matte, satin, or gloss.

I can’t wait to see what you’ve recently done, Noob.

Here are some pics of what I was talking about:

but overall it looked good, just a shame about the chipping…

This thread has been really helpful. I’m about to attempt a stick painting, but I just wanted to clear a couple things up…
I bought the Duplicolor vinyl and fabric paint, which says it’s a coating (not a dye). So here are my questions because there seems to be some outdated product information and a variety of opinions here…

  1. Is VHT the only product that makes true vinyl dye?
  2. Using the duplicolor, which people here seem to have success with, sanding will still be required right?
  3. If the duplicolor is done correctly, will I still need to clearcoat?
  4. Plastikote no longer makes true vinyl dye right?

Thanks for the help.

I guess its all debatable I get good results with old and new plastikote when emailed they said nothing has changed but try to stay away from gloss colors in either brand everyone I have spoke with have had bad results in gloss colors

I perfer vht dye except with the blue I use plasti I like the color better

I only sand if the plastic is glossy like TE sides

I don’t like dulicolor never had good results but other have used it

OK, i bought the duplicolor yesterday, but I’ve been debating on getting the plastikote. After your advice, I think I might do that and test em both on some spare plastic and see which one I like. The mod is on an SE, so we’ll see how it goes. Thanks for the help.

Quick question, a friend and I are painting a HRAP3 and a FSV3 with Dupli-Color High Performance Vinyl and Fabric spray paint(white). I forgot to give it the proper prep of shaking and warming the spray can so it started “spitting” a lot. I’m just wondering if the nature of this spray paint is supposed to “split” and also my V3 is showing marks of red because of the chemical reaction between the paint and the areas I forgot to clean off which had Goof Off left behind. Because we ran out of paint, we let it dry for more than 7 hours, my friend’s HRAP3 seems to be coming out fine but I’m wondering if more coats of vinyl paint will eventually cover up the red blotches with more layers(should I try to rinse out the stick and letting it dry before applying more layers?).

Thinking about getting VHT yellow for my SE, should I clear coat after?

Ok after going over alot of the posts it seems a bit overwhelming to say the least so im just gonna put down my problem and what i hope to achieve. Trying to repaint the sides of my TE, but at the same time one of the sides has a gash im trying to cover up along with any scratches. One of the problems im having is that most of the shops around me do not carry Plum/purple Krylon fusion. I just want to cover the gash, and paint the sides purple. If anyone can tell me the easiest way of going about this I would greatly appreciate that. Krylon is not required, so any alternatives are welcome. Here is the pic of the infected area :).

hi there, just wondering around if someone can help me repainting my namco stick, i ask into the namco appreciation thread but was a no luck try xD

cross-link for the pic.

Your best bet is to sand down the affected areas till they are no longer /barely visible starting at a fairly high grit sand paper down to at least 800 then sand then entire case with the final grit you decided on clean thoroughly and air dry thoroughly then you should be ready to paint and remember light coats and proper drying are key

I managed to screw this up quite badly and don’t know how to fix it. My TE came out looking very mottled and felt rough to the touch so I waited a week for the paint to cure and wet sanded with 3000 grit to try and improve the finish. Unfortunately the corners of the bumpers chipped straight off revealing the white plastic underneath. I did not prep correctly and obviously the dye has not taken to the plastic.

Where do I go from here? Sand the hell out of it with a much lower grit, buffer and try giving it another coat? I don’t have a clue what I’m doing.

you are not very descriptive
what part of the TE has been dyed the sides or main body they are both different and need different prep
what prep did you do
what color dye what color plastic
what brand dye/paint

The whole thing.

I just scrubbed the crap out of it.

Black dye on black and white plastic.

VHT black satin vinyl dye.

on the side panels gloss needs to be removed
that’s the problem you need to remove the gloss the dye won’t penetrate try to remove whats left of the dye and sand the white down and re-coat

It came out much better this time but there are still a couple of the mottled spots. I’m guessing it’s where the paint went on a little too thick and pooled. Took a pic with my crappy cel phone camera.

I’ve heard that runs and sags can seep into the plastic over time and sort themselves out though. Should I bother sanding or should I just leave it?

It looks like a discoloration I know this is a little late but I always heat the can while mixing/shaking
you will probably end up sanding it out

What kind or sandpaper do you recommend?
