Painting the Fightstick (With Krylon or Vinyl Dye)

I used Dupli colour vinyl and fabric and I liked it alot. But I think that might be a “dye” if your going to use actual “pain” then Krylon fusion for plastic is the best thing, but I reccomend you get Plastikote or VHT VINYL dye.

Like PaperTigre said, if you are trying to hide scratches, you CANNOT use dye. You have to use paint. I think the best thing would be to wetsand using 1500 grit sandpaper, paint it using Krylon Fusion Gloss Black, let it dry, then use Krylon Fusion Clear. Remember it’ll take a long time for the paint to dry and read the tutorial in the first post.

VHT FTW. I’d recommend that before anything else

… He’s trying to hide scratches. Vinyl dye does NOT hide anything. The dye will contour to the scratch and will basically do nothing.

If you have a case that is in good condition, then yes, it’s very excellent.

Guys I have a problem… I used Dupli colour vinyl and fabric on my TE stick and it works great on the plastic EXCEPT on the top Madcatz default artwork. I’m not sure what material that surface is made out of but I painted it nicely and gave it several days to dry (good enough for dye) but parts of it “peeled” off when I put masking top over them to make patterns (like in the video I posted before). So I can’t use Dupli colour vinyl and fabric on the top part of the stick. Should I get some Krylon for that part? The vinyl and fabric has worked really well everywhere else on the stick, such as wing and main body + bezel. Pictures below of peeling below.

…have you considered, removing the artwork…?

Are you painting over it? I’m just going off your wording. If you paint on the bare metal, it shouldn’t peel like that~ but keep in mind it wouldn’t be unusual. It isn’t going to be seeping into metal easily, and it can be stripped. I think it’d be less likely to do that than if you were to use Krylon.

I regret ever bringing the word “Krylon” into this thread to be honest. It’s awful.

The thing is the guy who’s video I am following does not remove the art work, but I actually did at first anyways because I did not realize this. After painting the metal however, I realized it has 4 holes around the joystick area that always show and are kind of ugly… in addition the black solder marks near those holes…

Here is the top artwork with peeled paint.

Does anyone know about Valspar plastic paint? I went to a bunch of stores and couldn’t find vinyl dye. It was the only plastic paint that was red. I figured I should check around before I spray my case.

Soo… I tried painting my spare SE stick in black with Duplicolor’s Dye and I kinda messed it up. There are drips everywhere and it kinda looks messy.

Was wondering what to do if I want to restart from the beginning. Sand it down?

the first post and title should be updated to say only use VHT vinyl dye or Plastikote vinyl paint (vinyl dye)

Yay for VHT vinyl dye! I dyed the button rims too. =D Matte black is better than gloss black any day.

Looks flawless.

If you use Krylon, always primer 1 or 2 coats. Then after applying the primer, 2-4 coats of fusion. After that 2-3 coats of clear coat.
I have controllers that have not faded using this method.

Not to dredge up an old thread or anything. But would I be able to vinyl dye a black TE-S completely white? Or would it only dull to a grey?

With many many coats of white I’ve seen it done for keyboards before, so it may be possible. My friend used an entire can of vinyl dye to change a black keyboard to white.

About how many coats of VHT would people recommend for something that is going to be a high use part of the joystick (ball/bat top, bezel, etc.)? Also would it make sense to put a coat or two of Acrylic Lacquer on afterwards?

Well I used a “regular” amount of vinyl dye on my button faces months ago, and vinyl dye will never wear off. I don’t think anything is more high-use than my buttons lol. So I think the normal 2-3 coats should be fine. And that’s it

So Acrylic Lacquer would be unnecessary?

Acrylic Lacquer is clear coat, you dont need it becuase you’re not even using paint. You’re using vinyl dye which absorbs and stains the plastic, it wont wear off…unless you play on the same stick/buttons for years and years until they break and explode.

Finished painting mine a week ago, printed artwork, and just got my parts yesterday. Final product:

Used regular Krylon (not Krylon fusion) and some clear coat. I honestly would have gone with vinyl dye, but it turned out pretty nice =]. My room just gets it a bit dusty
