Last retard question: About how long does it take for vinyl dye to cure, i.e. safe to use?
15-20 minutes per coat, but leave it set for 12+ hours for it to be ready to use, 24 hours to be on the even safer side.
Excellent. Thanks. Replica yellow battop will be good to go tomorrow in that case.
What is the latest? I mean what is considered the best and is everyone clear coating for cases? I bought a Blaze Twin stick that needs a paint job.
Dupli-Color (that’s a brand name) vinyl dye.
Auto shops sell them.
Ok, so use Dupli Color for plastic cases. Is it wise to clear coat it or not needed?
Read above.
Clear coats are used to protect layers of paint. If you dont use a clear coat, it’ll rub off.
What you’re talking about though is vinyl dye. Why would you want to use a clear coat? It’s a dumb idea. Vinyl dye pigments and stains plastics the color you want, it’s not a paint.
I am saying after the Vinyl Dye is applied. Do you clear after that. So If I paint the sides of a TE black would you clear coat it after that.
Re-read it. No need for clear coating if you use vinyl dye. Only if you paint it.
Got it. Thanks.
My modded Datel fightstick using vinyl dye

vinyl dye took like around 3 hours to finish applying to the case and then I left it for a day because it apparantly makes the plastic soft for around 12 hours. Quite pleased with it as it is my first and I intend to add LEDs to it soon.
So I found Dupli Color Vinyl and Fabric coating. Is this Dye? Its looks more like a paint. I cannot find anything called Dupli Color Vinyl Dye.
Out of curiosity did you ever do this? I am thinking of trying the same thing and I was curious how it turned out for you. I have a black TE and want one that is basically snow white.
It’s paint. Good luck finding Vinyl Dye, people aren’t really making it anymore in favor of paints. Nothing wrong with paint though, you’ll have to use a clear coat such as polyurethane, which is the same stuff used on guitars, so it is perfectly fine for handling and won’t wear off.
Have you read any of the posts in this thread? Heck I found Vinyl Dye in an auto store down the street
All the Duplicolor stuff at the auto stores I went to are Vinyl and Fabric coating, not particularly dye. They’re paints. All the Rustoleum and Duplicolor stuff was like that. Read the back of the can, and if you read this thread you’d see it has been posted in it as well that this stuff is paint. Unless it specifically states on the can Vinyl Dye, it is just a paint. In my area, I never saw any Vinyl Dyes, not even VHT or Plastikote. Hell, even all the Plastikote stuff now is just Vinyl Color, just another paint like how everyone else is moving from vinyl dye to vinyl paint instead.
The new Plastikote stuff is the same they just updated the can design its vinyl dye I have purchase a few cans of it old and new can design its always been called vinyl color opposed to dye with Plastikote brand it nothing like the crappy duplicolor and restoleum brand they are paint or coating I have not tried the vht brand. Vinyl dye is by far the best thing to use for plastic you can use as many clear coats as you want once you get a scratch its going to show original color unlike the dye I have experienced much better results with the matte finishes though
Vinyl Color:Specialty | PlastiKote Paint Products
Website says it’s a paint that fuses to the surface, kind of described the same way Krylon Fusion is. No doubt, real vinyl dye is great stuff but it is going to get harder and harder to find.
Also, if you put on a thick enough coating of polyurethane it should harden quite nicely and be no more or less scratch resistant than regular plastic, considering polyurethane IS a plastic once all the solvents evaporate out of it. You can get matte, satin, or glossy, and not be limited by what vinyl dye is available and instead use a good paint underneath it. You can be a lot more creative this way, and still protect your work since the polyurethane becomes a plastic coating outside of it. You’ll have to buy brush on, and not the shitty can stuff, and not some enamel acrylic garbage that isn’t nearly hard enough for regular handling.
I will have to look into that
but I have used kylon and the rustoleum brands and they are totally different type of deal PlastiKote literally has to be sanded off the plastic it is absorbed like a sponge and not a coating the only local place in my area to get the stuff is car quest I once vinyl dyed a case with the plasti white and then painted over the case with a grey plastic kylon paint and then decided to change the color so I used brake fluid (safest way to remove paint from plastic) to remove the paint the kylon came right off and the vinyl dyed white looked fresh like a new piece of molded white plastic it literally changed the color
Hi, gents. I’m about to go pick up some Duplicolor Vinyl Fabric/Dye from the local auto parts store to apply to my Standard FightStick and have a couple quick questions.
-
I’m going to get black Duplicor dye, and Duplicolor black comes in both Matte and Glossy. I’ve read a lot of good things about Matte, but I want my plastic to have a bit of a shinier finish, so to compliment the design. Does glossy vinyl fabric from Duplicolor produce as good of results as the matte?
-
Do I need to sand the plastic before applying the Duplicolor? If I do need to, what sandpaper do I need to get?
-
How many coats do I need to apply, and how long do I need to waint between coats?
-
When I’m done applying the dye, do I need to apply any clear coat or gloss enamel? If I do have to do this, how long do I need to wait after the final coat of dye before applying clear coat/gloss enamel?
Any answers/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
