Has anyone seen light blue vinyl dye? I see that VHT has a blue dye that looks to fit the bill… i’d like to see it in person though. All I’ve seen in store is the dark blue Might take a trip to a few more stores to find it
I ended up using that VHT vinyl dye on this and it came out very well. It almost does seem to be “part of the plastic” now, pretty incredible.
Well, I’ve been looking long and hard for Vinyl Dye. I went ahead and went with a black Plastikote Vinyl “Paint” even though people in this thread as well as the Carquest employee says it’s a dye. I’ve called and drove to numerous Shuck’s/O’Reily’s, and Autozones, but they had were a few colors of Duplicolor’s Vinyl and Fabic. I went to Home Depot with little luck. They only had a few colors of Krylon Fusion. If you’re looking to use Krylon Fusion, your best bet would be Fred Meyer (I think Kroger’s is the name of the store when you’re not on the west coast). They had TONS of different colors to choose from!
If you’re looking for actual Vinyl Dye other than the basic colors (Blue, red, grey, brown, white, black), you’re going to have a hard time finding a site that has a color sample. Most of them will list out the colors like this site: http://www.restoreclassics.com/Vinyl-Dye-Spray-8603.html and will cost 50% - 400% more than a can of Krylon Fusion.
I’m planning on dying my stick black then painting a couple of aquamarine/turquoise stripes on it. I still haven’t bought that color of paint yet. I’m just thinking about using painting tape, use regular car paint and glossing it. Is that a good idea?
KMart is pretty awesome when it comes to Krylon Colors, Altho goodluck finding Green lol
Bezel help
I recently decided to paint the bezel of my TE stick and went with Krylon black matte.
I put on 4 coats and let it dry for 24 hours and then put it back on. It literally took about 20 minutes of play before the paint would start rubbing off on the areas where my wrists would rub against the bezel.
Would a clear coat protect against the paint wearing off or would i have to start all over again with vinyl dye?
I think the general consensus is that the krylon stuff is poopy.
I’ve had pretty good success with the Dupli-color in both black and red. I just ordered a can of blue VHT, pretty stoked to start working with it.
Never use Krylon. Ever.
Krylon works okay if you’re patient and use a light shade.
Rustoleum is the heart-breaker. It works well maybe half the time but is a mini-disaster the rest of the time.
Dupli-Color white vinyl and fabric is pretty good but is next-to-impossible to find in stores now.
VHT is the new king and has replaced Dupli-Color in many places that carried Dupli-Color before…
Don’t forget Plastikote!
edit: ah but yes, VHT is more commonly found in stores.
You only waited 24 hours, youre supposed to wait a week.
Hey guys! After watching this video. I want to paint one of my sticks just like this

I might do red instead of orange since the orange looks good in that video but thats due to poor lighting. In another one of that guy’s video the true orange comes out and it looks ok.
Now the thing is I don’t know anything really about spray painting but over the past few days I have been doing alot of research and have a pretty good idea what to do. I’m going to go grab some spray paint soon. I have a few questions though
Why is sanding necessary?
What is the purpose of a primer?
Thanks in advance and any tips you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Sanding helps the paint stick on a very slightly rough surface instead of smooth plastic.
Primer also helps the paint stick also it helps the paint look smoother instead of showing spots. Also, it helps shows the color that you’re trying to paint. Like, if you want turn black into yellow, you would use white primer, then paint it yellow to make it brighter. Same goes the other say. If you’re trying to turn white into dark red, you’d want black primer, then paint it red.
Anyways, if you can help it I highly agree with 56k and recommend Plastikote Vinyl Paint (Even though it really is a dye). All you need to do is to clean the case, spray a light coat then a heavy coat and you’re done! You don’t need a primer or to sand it. Don’t be afraid to overspray. I thought I’d use a lot of light coats and it didn’t look good at all. Afterwards, I sprayed it a bit heavy, waited for about an hour and it turned out beautifully! There’s no drips, and everything is glossy (I used black gloss dye).
Very sadly though, you’re not going to find a lot of colors if you’re looking for Vinyl dye unless you look for online stores. And even then, you’re not going to find color samples of what they look like. You’re not going to find a light color besides white that is easily available.
Now, I haven’t tried using Krylon yet so I can’t say much about it, but what I can say is that my case looks good using Plastikote Black Gloss Vinyl Paint (even though it’s a dye).

Follow the instructions. 4 coats is alot to expect to be dry in 24hr, especially considering it takes a week or more to fully cure. Also, I doubt you prepped it well, since you failed to read the instructions.
Eep, this might be a bit late, but you can’t use Vinyl Dye if you’ve already painted using Krylon if you want it to look good. From what I understand is that Vinyl Dye is specifically used on plastic/vinyl surfaces. I’m not too entirely sure what will happen if you use Vinyl Dye on a painted surface (since the surface isn’t plastic anymore, it’s paint). And even if you sand the paint off, it’ll leave a rough surface which Vinyl Dye will not smooth out since it actually contours with the tiny gaps and crevices that you make with sandpaper so that it’ll look and feel rough after you use vinyl dye on a sanded surface.
I bought Dupli Colour Vinyl and Fabric (red, flat black, and white) and have used that on my TE stick. I’m still in the process of painting it. Will keep you guys updated. I’m still basically doing what that guy did in the video I posted earlier except with red/black instead of orange/black. I’ve made a few mistakes already since this is my first time spray painting.
Hey guys, I’m a real noob at this and I need your help. I’m planning on repainting the base of my R2 TE with a another coat of black to remove some hideous scratches. Can someone give me a rundown on what I’m supposed to do and what paint should I use.
If you’re trying to remove scratches, Vinyl dye won’t do anything for you. Vinyl dye… dyes the plastic to another color, it will (or rather should) adhere exactly to the texture of the plastic/vinyl.
What you want to do is use a paint. Sand it down a bit with some find sandpaper (I don’t know what grit to use off hand, i’m sure someone else can chime in and help out who has done it before) and use a paint. That way you’re actually adding a new coat on top of the plastic. Sorry that my answer is so vague, but at least you know where to start.
Umm, I thank you for the information but can you be a little more specific? I’m going to pick up the paints tomorrow and I really need to know which ones I’m supposed to buy. Also if I’m going to repaint a black surface do I need to buy primer and if so which one?
If your repainting black on black you shouldn’t need to use a primer. Go ahead and use Krylon fusion for plastics paint they are good and no priming nessecary. Just take your time, light coats. Give it plenty of time to dry after wards (chip resistant is a week I think). Use 1000+ grit sand paper for sanding prior to painting.
Are you sure because a lot of people in this thread are shitting all over Krylon. I’ll go and try it out tomorrow but if there is something extra that I need to know please tell me now.
